    Watching a video on the benefits of using operant conditioning, and individual psychology in modern Zoos. I have always had issues with Zoos, because they took wild animals and shuttled them about til a spot opened in a Zoo; that Animal usually died there. Zoos were stressful, and while they tried to make it as close to their natural habitat as possible, modern studies showed humans were anywhere from 50-90% of the animals' stress.
    In the last 20 years, Zoos has been utilizing in-house breeding programs, and conditioned patterning. Then they began to open up the parameters of the patterning process, by allowing visitors to see healthy offspring that were successfully patterned on their handlers.

    This desensitized the herds faster, and within 10 years of just those two programs.. the stress level dropped to much lower statistics.. though the three studies I've read on this, vary greatly from what this video claims.. but still the average stress level dropped significantly!! And now they are using target patterns and voice patterns. ( vocal commands; operant conditioning) to make vet visits, and overall necessary routine handling requirements. Safer and less stressful for both handlers and animals alike.They are still studying the effectiveness of these techniques.. but it looks to me like they are making the interaction engaging for the species individually.. this makes me happy.. because Zoos really are an effective education tool.. but man.. how long did THAT ( making this whole thing less stressful to the animals) take us??
