i watched a documentary on paul watson (former original greenpeace member and founder of the sea shepherd foundation) ...
and i'm beginning to rethink the non-violence movement ... now, i don't mean violence against people ... but i think that property is on the table ... so, if a ship is killing whales illegally somewhere ... mucking up their prop is fair game in lieu of any real enforcement ...
The results of sabaotage have been endlessly debated. Many of those acts certainly did bring some awareness to environmental issues. But in any case, in today's world, carrying out acts of sabotage is futile and useless. With modern surveillence techniques and such, you're going to get caught and put in jail and render yourself useless to any environmental cause. I do support Greenpeace and some of those activists do get jailed but not because they destroy things but because they place themselves between, for example, a whaling ship and a pod of whales.
There are planty of useful ways a person can be involved in the environmental movement. Organizations like 350.org, NRDC, and The Nature Conservancy need your help and support. These groups are doing good work and yes, a few members have been jailed for a day or two for demonstrating acts of civil disobedience (including Bill McKibben not so long ago) but they are not wasting away in prison for foolish and futile acts of (in todays world) pointless destruction. In todays world I would never encourage anyone to commit sabotage.I would encourage anyone intersted in making positive changes to get involved in something that is useful and makes sense in today's world.Post edited by brianlux on"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -

I agree with you regarding the difference between violence and sabotage, but with that said, I feel like we have this very lazy and disconnected society that if something doesn't effect them directly, they do not care. There is no one just way of protest and people in our society now feel out of their own comfort and not wanting to be bothered, that if anyone interrupts their little circle, it's somehow not "just" or shouldn't be tolerated.brianlux wrote:The problem with this is using the word "violence". That connotates doing harm to people. "Sabotage" is a much better word. There has been this long-standing misrepresentation of sabotage as "terrorism" or "violence". The people who started groups like Greenpeace and Earth First! had sabotage in mind but always spoke out against violence and terrorism. To use terms like "violence" and "terrorism" is a great injustice to their work. Sadly, even though those people did not kill , some of them have been killed.

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis0 -

Not to get off topic, but do you see something like OWS as an example protest because something has interrupted people's comfort level or as a sign of people becoming more energetic and less disconnected?
I think another problem is that there are a LOT of very hardworking people for an organization like, say, 350.org which has instigated huge world wide gatherings over environmental issues where many people worked hard and many, many participated and yet we've recieved little media coverage. We'll see what happens November 6th when the White House is surrounded in protest of the Keystone Pipeline."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
I think any form of protest is great, but at some point there has to be clear defined plan, action or objective to a protest or resistance. With that said, if nothing specific comes out of OWS, I think it's nothing more than a billboard camp-out.brianlux wrote:FiveB247x wrote:I agree with you regarding the difference between violence and sabotage, but with that said, I feel like we have this very lazy and disconnected society that if something doesn't effect them directly, they do not care. That thread's been an interesting (and heartbreaking) read for me. I've learned a lot, become aware of things I wish I hadn't - though that's not a bad thing, not at all.
Learning isn't always a feel-good experience.0 -
So... do we have anyone here who is a conservationist (who has a 'field' job in conservation)? Wildlife conservation, habitat management, wildlife management, etc.?
I know there are a lot who seem to be knowledgeable, passionate and acive but was wondering if anyone was working in this field?0 -
