I think any form of protest is great, but at some point there has to be clear defined plan, action or objective to a protest or resistance. With that said, if nothing specific comes out of OWS, I think it's nothing more than a billboard camp-out.
I agree with you regarding the difference between violence and sabotage, but with that said, I feel like we have this very lazy and disconnected society that if something doesn't effect them directly, they do not care. There is no one just way of protest and people in our society now feel out of their own comfort and not wanting to be bothered, that if anyone interrupts their little circle, it's somehow not "just" or shouldn't be tolerated.
Not to get off topic, but do you see something like OWS as an example protest because something has interrupted people's comfort level or as a sign of people becoming more energetic and less disconnected?
I think another problem is that there are a LOT of very hardworking people for an organization like, say, 350.org which has instigated huge world wide gatherings over environmental issues where many people worked hard and many, many participated and yet we've recieved little media coverage. We'll see what happens November 6th when the White House is surrounded in protest of the Keystone Pipeline.

That thread's been an interesting (and heartbreaking) read for me. I've learned a lot, become aware of things I wish I hadn't - though that's not a bad thing, not at all.
So... do we have anyone here who is a conservationist (who has a 'field' job in conservation)? Wildlife conservation, habitat management, wildlife management, etc.?
I know there are a lot who seem to be knowledgeable, passionate and acive but was wondering if anyone was working in this field?

i have and will be again sometime soon and study this stuff on a constant. looking into trout hatchery work and water sampling. my buddy is interested in this water sample business. he has a boat. could ortho, climax chemical plants and other nearby companies be dumping shit into waterways? what if we find radioactive/atomic waste from when the army ammunition plant (just up the street) messed around with atomic energy? that is all old news around here. let's see what the AEC (atomic energy commission) thinks about us sneaking in for samples, yes/no?
anyone wanna eat some fish? anyone want a sip of water? :corn:
wait.
let's kill something like a dolphin and frame it
hang it above the mantel

Thank you for asking an serious question that is on topic. It's refreshing whenever posts to threads like this stay on the subject.
I'm not in conservation by occupation but my brother in law has worked many hard years in forest research and tree genetics. He can tell you stories about what's really going on their that might even turn the heads of the most cynical anti-environmentalists.

Who are you to judge what people feel strongly about? Do people cry in church? Well, for some people around the world, a worship of nature/the natural environment is their religion. They can touch it, they can feel it, they can spend their lives in it. If one is to criticize these individuals, then one leaves themselves open for criticism of their religious beliefs.

Well said, Whygohome.
Maybe this looks hysterical and yes, a bit dramatic but really, there's plenty of good reason for weeping and sorrow. And to make fun of people have strong feeling like this, who mourn the loss of nature, well that says something. I'll let it go at that.

a herd of 22 elephant shot from airborne gunfire from a helicopter. after the gunfire and all lie dead, they removed tusks and genitals for the black market trade of ivory and whatnot
I saw this but was too disgusted to post it.
The culprits should be the ones who have their genitals removed....while still alive.
I just don't know what anyone can do to stop this. I am a pessimist on this issue. I'm in New York. What the hell can I do about this other than write letters?

Sad
i guess we can't go kill the pricks which is what they deserve. we don't know who did it and it is very far away. so yeah writing letters is a good idea. we can curse them as if witch doctors, yes/no?

I'm not a conservationist, but I play one on T.V.
I do have a few friends that are forestry majors and sometimes help them out on the weekends.
I'm in...me and Ted.

I'm not usually a jealous man, but I can't help but be quite envious of Mr. Grimshaw.
