we are here. we care. what can we do? let's do something for the planet and wildlife. i want to plant trees. where can a guy purchase and plant trees? can i plant trees by donating them to state park and forest land, as i don't have much land?

what gets you good folks wound up? cigarette butt littering makes me want to hurt the litterer. i love redwood trees and the like. maybe you have a story of when you saw the redwoods? are you a student aiming at environmental science classes and have some facts for us?

anyone have info on ed being enviromentalist of the year(which year)? or is this a rumor?

planting trees by yourself is uniting even when alone. we're doing better by the planet and nature by caring for the earth and things.

  • I try and do everything I can for the environment... for example:

Collect litter when I see it and normally 'have words' with those who drop it openly in the street.
Use only recycled toilet tissue and kitchen paper.
Use only environmentally sound cleaning products such as washing up liquid and washing tablets for clothes.
I'm a vegetarian due to my disgust at the mass production of meat and the general attitude towards animals.
I recycle what I can in my household waste.
I support Sustrans by giving a monthly donation: http://www.sustrans.org.uk/
I walk when I can and promote car sharing and public transport.
I turn off any electrical product not in use.
I have a second hand/recycled wedding dress and our decorations have been collected from nature.
I compost waste that can be composted...

    etc etc.

If I could have a self sufficient house with solar panels, compost toilet and firewood heating, I would :D
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

I just bought a wood stove that is 90% efficient ... although the "environmental" impact was secondary to the high cost of heating oil. ;) I'm looking forward to staying toasty this winter!

In the US, I would contact my state's forestry service to see if they give out seedlings of native trees and shrubs to plant....I got some river birch and beauty-berry this past from a forestry service event.

Check out the Arbor Day Foundation. When I donated some money last year, they sent me 10 trees (saplings). Since I rent, I gave them to the county parks dept.

Oh yeah man, but we love you, you cute little misanthropic BinuralJam. ;)

Seriously, this is a thought. I love the people in my life and I love the idea of loving you people even though I can't really say that I do because I don't really know you well enough to say that....BUT...

I also harbor a little tendancy toward the misanthropic but much in the way, say, Paul Westerberg states it- with a mixture of tenderness and bitterness:

    "So don't pin your hopes
    Or pin your dreams
    On misanthropes
    And guys like me.
Well the truth is over-rated I suppose.
    It's a Wonderful Lie
    But I'll still get by
    On those.
    It's a Wonderful Lie..."

It's just that there are too many of us. No, I'm not at all for that spiteful and hateful "let's all die diatribe". Love and Only Love, baby. Just keep your love in check enough to help us ease off this great planet that supports us. Want three kids? Adopt a couple- there's plenty to go around.

Sorry- don't mean to preach here- it's just that I witnessed a literal stream of big trucks carting off huge shit-load after huge shit-load of Sierra mountain granite in the name of "progress"- some bullshit road project intended to "invigorate the economy" but forget about the environment- you know it's just rocks (and a few trees, squirrels, Douglas fir, dogwoods, Blue Columbine, Orange Bush Monkeyflowers, etc).

So what did I do about it? I dragged my scruffy butt over 5 miles of well established trail and remembered that there is still life out there worth protecting. Locally, we have, among others, ENFIA (the El Dorado National Forest Interpretive Assosiation) and ARC (the American River Conservancy). I'm sure you have something similar in your area.

And my usual plugs for 350.org, Natrual Resources Defense Council, Greenpeace and The Nature Conservancy.

I do what I can when I can. Also hubby works for a Solar Power company now.

    There are lots of organisations that you can get involved in, as well as doing your bit privately;

Arborday.org usually has deals and are pretty cheap if you want to buy trees. or go to your local garden center, but they can be pricey. I buy trees for our property through the county's tree nursery, and in the spring your state DEC dept may have a seedling sale.
Contact your local state parks and ask what you can do to help, I'm sure they'd let you do something. But the time to do it is either now, or in the spring.

we've given 'gift trees' in the past for customers and loved ones ...
a nice way to honor those who have passed or as a living gift for a holiday
    or birthday

numerous sites now to order from and you can track your tree and visit it too!

i watched a documentary on paul watson (former original greenpeace member and founder of the sea shepherd foundation) ...

and i'm beginning to rethink the non-violence movement ... now, i don't mean violence against people ... but i think that property is on the table ... so, if a ship is killing whales illegally somewhere ... mucking up their prop is fair game in lieu of any real enforcement ...

I think Sea Shepard is better at destroying their own boats then the whalers. It's a good thing Bob Barker has deep pockets. ;)

That group ranks very high on my unintentional comedy scale and I always look forward to new reports on their hi-jinks.

 ... they do go thru a bunch of boats ... but they have impeded whalers and in essence saved many whales/dolphins from death ... so, i'm sure they feel its well worth it ...

I don't have any sympathy for the Japanese whalers, that's for sure.

The problem with this is using the word "violence". That connotates doing harm to people. "Sabotage" is a much better word. There has been this long-standing misrepresentation of sabotage as "terrorism" or "violence". The people who started groups like Greenpeace and Earth First! had sabotage in mind but always spoke out against violence and terrorism. To use terms like "violence" and "terrorism" is a great injustice to their work. Sadly, even though those people did not kill , some of them have been killed.

The results of sabaotage have been endlessly debated. Many of those acts certainly did bring some awareness to environmental issues. But in any case, in today's world, carrying out acts of sabotage is futile and useless. With modern surveillence techniques and such, you're going to get caught and put in jail and render yourself useless to any environmental cause. I do support Greenpeace and some of those activists do get jailed but not because they destroy things but because they place themselves between, for example, a whaling ship and a pod of whales.

There are planty of useful ways a person can be involved in the environmental movement. Organizations like 350.org, NRDC, and The Nature Conservancy need your help and support. These groups are doing good work and yes, a few members have been jailed for a day or two for demonstrating acts of civil disobedience (including Bill McKibben not so long ago) but they are not wasting away in prison for foolish and futile acts of (in todays world) pointless destruction. In todays world I would never encourage anyone to commit sabotage.I would encourage anyone intersted in making positive changes to get involved in something that is useful and makes sense in today's world.

I agree with you regarding the difference between violence and sabotage, but with that said, I feel like we have this very lazy and disconnected society that if something doesn't effect them directly, they do not care. There is no one just way of protest and people in our society now feel out of their own comfort and not wanting to be bothered, that if anyone interrupts their little circle, it's somehow not "just" or shouldn't be tolerated.

Not to get off topic, but do you see something like OWS as an example protest because something has interrupted people's comfort level or as a sign of people becoming more energetic and less disconnected?

I think another problem is that there are a LOT of very hardworking people for an organization like, say, 350.org which has instigated huge world wide gatherings over environmental issues where many people worked hard and many, many participated and yet we've recieved little media coverage. We'll see what happens November 6th when the White House is surrounded in protest of the Keystone Pipeline.
