What live DVD is best?

TB2000 - How fuckin good is this? Ok the sound is probably not 100% but the way its filmed, and the intensity of the performances...Amazing. It really feels like you're at the concert. 10/10

Live At The Garden - I was there (at the back ) and it was a great show, but its filmed pretty poorly, going from one closeup of a band member to another, and it doesn't catch the feeling in the Arena that night. However it's nice to have a complete show. 7/10

Immagine In Cornice - Not a big fan of this, the performances I find a little uninspired for some reason, despite the band being great on the 2006 Euro Tour. The backstage stuff is not all that interesting either, although its wonderfully filmed. I find it a little pretentious actually, and the political stuff is just silly.
    6/10

Although it's not a Live DVD - Single Video Theory is wonderful, and gets a 10/10 as well.

This. This has severely cut into my sleep time. So many great performances on here. I think I have already spent more time on this set of DVDs than any of the other releases. (I do LOVE the Showbox DVD though)

Good review. I was just watching TB2000 and had forgotten how many songs it had. I'd probably give it an 8 though simply because the video quality isn't that great for some songs IMO. I'll have to watch Garden again to give it an updated score but that would probably be anywhere from the 7-9 range. I do remember liking it better than TB when it came out. For Immagine, I would give performances and audio/visual quality a 10. I agree that the backstage stuff really isn't that great, and the setlist is much shorter than the other DVDs. 6 is a fair score. SVT = 10 in my book. A pearl jam dvd filled with songs from my favorite pearl jam album is always going to be a winner.

I'd probably give showbox a 4 or something...It was a warmup show and it showed...also wasnt fond of the filming or the setlist. I haven't gone through the whole DVD in years but that's just what I remember. In fact, I think that's the only PJ dvd that I've only seen once. :o

    TOURING BAND ALL THE WAY!
    Same here

Yes, Garden has better sound but I prefer the performances from "Touring Band", which were taken from multiple gigs, to the MSG show. I don't think Showbox competes with either of them imo. The hometown gig had a sloppy feel to it (again, imo)

Cornice I define as more of a documentary than a live concert DVD since it probably contains half or less of a set's worth of tunes. And for a documentary I prefer Single Video Theory or EVEN their unreleased documentary video of their '95 tour of Austraila/New Zealand/Japan to Cornice.

MTV unplugged is hard to compare for me because...it's a tv gig and tv gigs have a completely different vibe to them. Eddie was sitting on that stool and you could tell he wanted to move a few times. I think it is better than the Storytellers dvd though if you wanna compare tv gigs.

    Touring Band
    Live At the Garden
    Single Video Theory
    Cornice
    Unplugged
    Storytellers
    Showbox

You're having a laugh, right? Not digging IIC is one thing, I get that, but this thing about crowds?

Come experience a few shows on this side of the pond, then you'll see how absurd this sounds.

I thought the idea of shooting it on semi-pro cam's by "nonproffesionals" were great and it has a gritty look to it. Therefore I also dig the VFC-film with the super8 footage.

And it really doesnt't say anything about it being realesed to BD with uncompressed audio. The video will be upscaled, but so are the BD's of 28 days later and blair witch. Can still have a place in the "new" format.

IIC had a great concept but falls flat with the editing of songs and the knowdledge of them shooting 5 full shows (which were great) and ending up with that.

the rabid crowds in the US.
What? The ones standing still holding a beer and goes and pees during evenflow?

  • Spent the weekend re-watching all the live DVD's

Live at the Garden. Holy. Crap. The energy is off the charts. Eddie is a force of nature. Mike shreading. Boom shreading. Great show and good camera work.

Touring Band. Another holy crap moment. Band is firing on all cylanders, especially since they cherry pick from the entire tour. Camera work leaves something to be desired sometimes and since alot of the shows were outside in the cold some performances seem a little stiff.

Immagine in Cornice. I don't how it got started that the European crowds were somehow lame? they brought their "A" game all through this DVD those crowds were great. Set-list a little weak. Great camera work.

    For ME:
Immagine in Cornice (I love all the behind the scenes stuff)
Live at the Garden (Pure PJ energy and power)
    Traveling Band. (Great performances)

Wow, I thought they lacked energy all through but it was a totally professional performance. It's strange how people can see such different things.

TB2000 is the best, and if you only buy 1 DVD, this is it.

The Garden is the best sounding.
Showbox also sounds about the same.
The band sound too subdued on these shows, but they are still awesome. The sound quality is just about perfect and just a notch above TB2000, if only the performances were more energetic.

Immagine in Cornice is the worst musically, and is the worst sounding too. It's pretty cool as a movie, they do some nice stuff with the fans that is probably not possible with the rabid crowds in the US. Not essential.

The Kids are Twenty has really grown on me... so here's an updated list of my favourites:
    TB2000
    Kids are Twenty
    The Garden/Showbox
    Immagine in Cornice

If you only buy 1 DVD, I'd still recommend TB2000 over everything else, but the Kids are Twenty is close second.

  • Touring Band 2000 and Live At The Garden are my favorite's....With that said I need another concert dvd which should be in blu-ray and be a concert from front to back unlike Immagine in Cornice which is mixed with live concert footage and behind the scene footage with the band.......Problem is that I've got the music footage cranked then Eddie is practicing his Italian........I want a blu-ray concert dvd with another disc in the set with the behind the scene's footage.....Separate the two.....If that is done it would be a huge seller....
  • Bump.

Just watched Live at the garden and TB2000 this last week for the first time ever.

    They're awesome!!

Can't wait to check out imagine in cornice, I've seen it before but it's probably been almost a decade.

Funny to see the videos of when they really rocked and weren't so aware of the audience and their expectations. They did what they wanted to do and said fuck you to those that disagreed. A lot has changed and become scripted and expected, but that's the way it goes I suppose. Gotta say that the shows were a shitload more fun to attend back then compared to now, but I still love 'em.

    Looking forward to people's thoughts.....

Showbox is worth the view just to see mike go a lil loopy at the end of 1/2 Full. The War tag on Daughter is pretty passionate too, and RVM is always a highlight, mike examining ed's beaten guitar afterward always gave me a laugh.

Garden and TB 2000 are both equally awesome for me. I've watched each over 100 times easily. Should be noted 2000 was the year I went and bought all the 2000 boots after attending one show and started to become very annoying to all my friends and family... So that may be a biased preference.

Immagine just never really clicked with me but life also became much busier around that time. Inspired to revisit after viewing this thread. Also need to sit down and give The Kids Are 20 a thorough viewing yet.
