Finally. Seems more about the presidential race then actually doing something he feels is right. But I'll take it.

Good news. This has taken too much of our resources--especially in terms of our soldiers' lives and time away from their families for the ones who survived. I'll admit that I was in favor of going there, but I certainly never expected it to take over 8 years--especially once Saddam was caught. I just hope there is a plan in place to ensure that we aren't leaving a crapfest behind for their government to clean up. If we're leaving behind a strong government that can stand on its own, then something positive has come from this beyond removing a cruel and ruthless dicator. If it all goes to hell when we leave, then you have to wonder if it would have been better for everyone if we'd never gone there.

Bush deserves most, if not all the credit for this.

If his administration didnt invade Iraq, there would be no troops for Obama to 'get credit for' withdrawing.

in all seriousness. Great news. Hopefully we have learned from Iraq... but also can put it behind us.

Unfortunately, the lesson we've learned will probably be short lived.

it only took him 3 years and over a thousand days to accomplish one of his biggest campaign promises.

to be honest i did not think it was ever going to happen.

i'm just waiting for the calls of condemnation for "cutting and running"...

It sounds like we will have to get into Pakistan before leaving Afghanistan ... at least that's what I'm reading into some of Hillary Clinton's recent statements.

This seems like a good idea, as long as it doesnt compromise our welfare in US. We cant play global cop anymore.

It's this one by the way. ;)

AS long as it's a military plan and not a political plan, it's a great thing.

From CNN - Mitt Romney's response:

    Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney:

"President Obama's astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women. The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government. The American people deserve to hear the recommendations that were made by our military commanders in Iraq."

I agree with the last sentence, would love to know. I bet we never know.

really? Wasnt this "THE PLAN" All along? 2011? Huh, actually did something within a set time frame as promised? What the fuck is going on here?

The unavoidable question is , is this statement from Romney a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude on the part of his handlers?

Another worthy candidate. Considering how long it will take us to remove ourselves from the Middle East (directly) - Iraq and Afganistan... I'd sooner bet on Venezuela. Easier target and same access to oil.

Do we invade countries with nukes? Makes for a good incentive for countries to get rolling on their nuke program.

seriously, mccain, graham, cornyn, amongst other warhawks are shuddering. to a gop grunt did not want to give an ounce of credit to the libyan mission coordinated by our military/admin. mccain finally reconsidered and gave obama credit (thx dude).

i could give a crap about the timing of this or next years major 'afghan withdrawal' to coincide w/political points. the gop is getting its teeth kicked in right now, pile it on pres...
