Pearl Jam/Nirvana & Sex Pistols/The Clash

  • The difference between Pearl Jam & Nirvana remind me a lot of the differences between Sex Pistols & The Clash, both the big two bands in different music movements.

Sex Pistols = the band that popularized punk
The Clash = ultimately the better longer, enduring band with the intelligence and being musically adventurous

Nirvana = the band that popularized ''grunge''
Pearl Jam = ultimately the better, longer enduring band with the intelligence.
    and being musically adventurous

By saying that PJ was better than Nirvana because PJ was more popular means that you are probably one of the people Nirvana was trying to get away from by making In Utero. Anyway, long story short, can't we all just get along?

It's funny because I didn't say that but you just made that up. I said listen to both bands live and you can see who's better. I said Pearl Jam was the biggest band in the world and thats true. My favorite album is Yield and No Code and that chased the fans your talking about away, not me I love those albums. I'm a music snob bud, I admit it, I love Fugazi, Sleater Kinney, Eleven, L7 and bands like that, so your way off. The Nirvana would be still making great music, is hogwash, Dave was leaving pal, Cobain would have went solo. The fanboy stuff I knew was coming, but why can people always talk about how Nirvana was so much better than the other Seattle bands and a Pearl Jam fan gets the fan boy stuff. By the way, I posted this to piss you Nirvana fans off, and it's working to perfection.

My first memory of Cobain was him ripping my favorite band, so I have ripped him ever since. When you knock Nirvana you know several follow up threads are a coming, I don't care, I don't like Nirvana.

    I like both bands.

I think that if Cobain went solo, it would still be absolutley spectacular. I mean, look at the Unplugged album. A lot of covers some say? Sounds a lot like a certain singer's solo shows that we like so much...

HAHA, I'm not pissed off. You got your opinion and I have mine. I personally don't think Kurt Cobain shot himself because his 20 minutes of fame was up and I can't see how you could honestly have a good argument that points to that being his motive. A Kurt solo project sounds a lot better than a Sleater-Kinney concert to me, but then again I'm not a music snob as you claim to be.

Pearl Jam at the time of Cobain's suicide was the biggest band in the world even though they were in full retreat of the spotlight. I remember the same as what a previous poster said, Nirvana was pretty much done. Dave was leaving and they were not very relevant. Cobain ate some lead and all hell broke loose with calling Nirvana the greatest thing since sliced bread. If you listen to Nirvana live and Pearl Jam live, there is no fucking way anyone can say Nirvana was a better band than Pearl Jam. If you do your just flat out lying. It doesn't matter who is better I agree, but that doesn't change the fact Nirvana couldn't keep up with Pearl Jam in any catagory. It doesn't change the fact that Kurt Cobain couldn't hang from Eddie Vedder's ball sack. He didn't kill himself because he didn't want his art exploted. He killed himself because his 20 minutes of fame was almost over and he knew Pearl Jam was just starting. I know several don't like hearing that but it is true. I'm sure Kurt was looking in on Ed's solo shows from were ever he is thinking, "damn that fucker's good".

New album's a coming, It's great to love Pearl Jam's music isn't it. 18 years later and were still rocking.

I think I'll go throw on a little In Utero,

    NOT.

Hey now.. In Utero remians one of the best rock in roll records of the 1990's and maybe of all time. As a long time and fairly dedicated PJ fan I cant say PJ has come close.

I don't know if you guys were at an age where you had the opportunity or good taste to buy this record when it came out, But that fall - (15 years ago!) Cobain hit the spot. Everyone including Neil Young, Micheal Stipe (REM), Bono to Chuck D has publically stated that this record had a dramatic impact on their career.

And man if you had the chance to see it live... It scared the shit out of me it was so good.

Bit of an unfair call, Nirvana "sound dated" (to me they don't) because as you know they broke up after Kurt's death thus ceased making music. Who know what Nirvana might have sounded like today if they were still around, they could have changed their sound and approach, we will never know.

I will always love Nirvana and PJ, this us vs them mentality is boring meAnd who says Nirvana don't sound good live, they are awesome, listen to their live cd, ''from the muddy banks of the wishkah"...brilliant!

Completely agree, I have another one of their bootlegs from a show they did in NY, awesome, awesome stuff.

I guess this would make The Stooges...Green River? The Ramones...Mudhoney?

Afterall, The Sex Pistols and The Clash didn't become punk bands until they saw The Ramones play London...this is a fact.

As for the never ending Pearl Jam-Nirvana battle to the death...

Nirvana blew the roof off of the whole scene. It paved the way for bands like Pearl Jam to come busting out.

Same comparisson could be used for the Beatles and Rolling Stones

Nirvana could be The Beatles....Pearl Jam could be The Rolling Stones of the Gen X Grunge era.

The Beatles crashed...The Stones...well....They're still alive.

When did the Beatles crash? Are we insinuating Abbey Road was a low note?

I'm sorry but neither PJ or Nirvana qualify to be compared to the Beatles or The Stones.

Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of both bands but come on folks there is a whole different level of range, cultural impact, quality and consistency. U2 comes close but doesn't qualify either.

I would love to see PJ come out of their hole and experiment, they have the talent. But its a bit of a tired sound. You know have some fun... rock n roll. Why so serious?

Its interesting to note that when Cobain died he was writings songs with complex arrangements (horns etc)... Can you imagine? That would have been cool.

I think you missed my point entirely.

I was talking about how Nirvana blew the doors open for Pearl Jam much like The Beatles blew the doors open for The Rolling Stones.

And hate to break it to you...But The Beatles called it quits...The Stones kept on and didn't break up.

Not that breaking up is bad...It's just how it all went down.

Nirvana collapsed and will never be again
    Pearl Jam is still around.

I was playing with the original post which was comparing the Sex Pistols and Clash which neither Pearl Jam or Nirvana are or will ever be as well.

I was actually thinking of paralleling Pearl Jam & Nirvana to The Beatles & Stones.

    Both parallels are similar.

  • Are Nirvana the most overrated band ever? I think so...I was listening to their Unplugged album the other day, every song sounds similar, same kind of chord sequences. Yes, they wrote some great songs, but Pearl Jam could switch their sound so effortlessly from punk to classic rock, to folky stuff.

Cobain was the poster boy, the good looking, child like singer, who was also a heroin addict, the perfect embodiment of grunge..

Pearl Jam weren't even grunge, and I sometimes wish they were from San Francisco or something, it probably would of helped their career
