I have a buddy who likes to remind me most athletes are not especially smart. Nor do most care or learn about anything meaningful outside their sport.

It is interesting to see some Americans happy to see America lose.  Is this just because Trump was rooting for (checks notes …) America?  No need to respond, it is more rhetorical at this point, but I will advise on putting down social media if this thought process seems logical.  I doubt the man has ever been to a hockey game

Fun game to watch.  If only the NHL could find a way to capitalize off these events.

I have honestly always pulled for Canada over the US in hockey.  US always seems to have kind of entitled, unlikeable players compared to Canadians.  

I was fine with this version (there are still douches), but that Trump thing and them yucking it up about him telling them to make Canada the 51st state was not a good look.   As I mentioned, Guerin going out of his way to thrust Trump (who clearly is a divisive figure) front and center was a dumb move and it took focus away from hockey.  Guerin is another yo-yo from the past referenced above.  
I even remember Eichel when he was in Buffalo got way too MAGA on his social media and had to delete his stuff because he was arguing with the public about stupid shit.

With Trump, I have kind of gone into head-in-the sand mode.  He is president, I respect the office and all that... but this was a stupid move that annoyed me.

Right now, Canada is the classier team. It’s not the Olympics. Let’s not pretend this was anything but an all star break game. 

You can simplify it to the least common denominator and say Trump was rooting for America. But you’d have to ignore everything else that had been posted to come to that conclusion.

I surely didn't root for team Canada but the 51st state thing is so fucking bullshit I don't blame anyone who would root against anyone who supports that.
I'm pissed that the asshole in chief tried to taint a fun event with his stupid bullshit.
This isn't messing with Russia or Qatar or some fucked up environment,  these are our friendly neighbors to the north.

This is exactly right. 
 
Now I did root for Canada frankly because I like the players better.  In particular, being a Lightning fan, I love seeing Coop getting more credit for being the great coach he is.  Throw in Hagel, Cirelli and Point, and it was easy for me to like Canada here compared to the face of the US, being the Tkachuks.  

Olympics will be a different story.

Trump calling in to wish the team good luck. I almost gagged when I heard that. Was kinda hoping someone was gonna say something to him. 

Back to regular season now. I’m amazed that almost everyone in the eastern conference has a shot at the playoffs (except for buffalo, sorry).
