Although, it would be extremely hard for me to pick...I think you nailed it with this song. It's the first one that popped in my head.

I was wondering why this was "in honour of" until I saw the other thread regarding their break up right after posting here.

    What a damn shame.

They had a hell of a run and made some wonderful and unforgettable music.

  • What's The Frequency, Kenneth? or Lotus :(
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

  • Thanks for starting a thread like this. Still hard to believe the news. Two of my faves have already been mentioned (River and Kenneth) so I'll post a few others (too hard to narrow down to just one):

Their first five albums are pure genius. Not a single bad tune in the bunch. And they delivered many many good tunes after that, too, including all of those mentioned here. There's no way I can pick a favorite -- they're one of my top two or three bands of all time. I really dug their new album, especially this one, which deserves some love from us. Awesome!

  • We were lucky enough to have front row pit for R.E.M. at the Mann Center in Philly on June 18, 2008. Two songs in, we saw Ed standing backstage and I knew that I was going to see what I'd hoped for... Ed joined R.E.M. for one of my fave songs, Begin the Begin...

Here's video I shot from that night (audio & video are not great, but it was the best I could get with my crappy little point and shoot)

  • how do you pick just one?

Losing My Religion a really haunting song. The tribute to Kurt and River Pheonix Let me in. Everybody Hurts. Whats the Frequency Kenneth. Stand. Man on the Moon. End of the World. So. Central Rain. Drive. The Great Beyond.

Ive posted it before, but i really respect their sense of melody and harmony on their first couple records. HarborCoat. Laughing. The use of canon in those early songs was mindblowing.

Not sure what you mean by this, but I'm curious. It may be some term I don't know. Will you explain further? (Not being a smartass, I'm genuinely intrigued.)

didnt know myself until a few years back when i asked people on this board. But in songs like Harborcoat, Michael is singing the main verse then in the background you hear him singing a seperate verse. Sounds brilliant. The song is gorgeous and sounds great, but the verses when it picks up there, its almost more unintelligiable than normal, as its two verses sung basically at the same time overlapping one another. A non REM example would be Blink 182's song Feeling this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImvyMwLlb7U
From 2:08 on in that song. Alot of their early songs used that effect. In essence its a counter melody, for lack of a better term.

Gotcha, thanks for explaining. Love that about them, too. "King of Birds" comes immediately to mind as one of my favorite canons, if I'm using the terms correctly.

  • Sorry to hear they broke up. Never been a huge fan, but they were a great band nonetheless.

Surprised to see no one has posted this one. "Try Not to Breathe"...always been one of my favorites.

  • Been a huge fan since I first bought Fables in '85 (yes, I'm old), though I oddly never thought much of Murmur, and thought Automatic was way overrated as well. Top four are Lifes Rich Pageant, Out Of Time, New Adventures in Hi-Fi and the amazing Accelerate. Also loved Fables and Document.

Anyway, so many great songs, but top faves would be:

    Southern Central Rain
    Driver 8
    Begin The Begin
    End of The World
    World Leader Pretend
    Country Feedback
    Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
    Bang And Blame
    Leave
    Hope
    She Just Wants To Be
    Boy In The Well
    Until The Day Is Done
    Uberlin

Yes, my favorite from each record, except Murmer. Though I guess I'd say West Of The Fields from that.

So bummed I'll never see them live again...will be interesting to see how the rest of each member's career unfolds...Peter's always doing some crazy thing, Michael not so much. Or Mike.

Whatever, sad day. Time to spin Out of Time, described by Michael as being about time and memory. So it goes...
  • Drive
    Strange Currencies
    World Leader Pretend
    Nightswimming
    What's The Frequency Kenneth?

But they are one of those bands that a track will not hit me 20 times when I listen to an album, it'll just seem like a filler, and then it just gets you.
we're all going to the same place...

Loved their stuff up to and including Green. Not big on their post-90s output. One of my favourite songs below...

    Ottawa 2011
London 2013 "The Dundas Hookers on Crack" Show
  • THESE DAYS

    So sad they are done...

    Incredible Band...

Beautiful and Rocking!!! Like Music should be...
  • And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....

It has to be Country Feedback. My favourite version is the Later With Jools Holland one but I can't find a video of that so this will have to do
