I love it. Funny interpretation of it and all. ha.
What I didn't like were all the advertising banners all over the venue. They are just what you don't want to see when you're listening to or playing music.

It's true, it could have been "Bud Light Lime PJ20" for all of the billboards and banners promoting that beverage.

It could have been that way and I'm really grateful that it wasn't. I was joking, of course, since all the advertising banners were gone and all that we had were the Pearl Jam symbol flags flying everywhere. It was beautiful.
I think the new symbol fails. It is far too cryptic to get people's attention, to make them see the P and J and it doesn't immediately convey the band's name even if a person somehow manages to decipher it as PJ. At best it is a symbol for the crowd who is intimately familiar with the band already. And for that crowd, I think it isn't very interesting anyway. For strangers, it absolutely bombs at advertising Pearl Jam to new people.
Pearl Jam's take on the Plan B skateboard logo??? I'm pretty sure that's what it is. They also used the independent logo a couple of years ago with the "Built to last" slogan.

There was actually a large Bud Light Lime banner to the right of the pavilion (I was in Section 203 and you couldn't miss it), and there were two Bud Light Lime billboards in front of the PJ20 Alpine Valley billboard in the parking lot (which I used as landmarks to pinpoint exactly where I parked).
The only show I recall where there was truly no advertising in the venue was at the Forum in L.A. in 2006. Eddie made a note of it during the show.
It obviously gets people talking and for that reason it works. First thing I thought of was how cryptic it is. I also like that it's very subtle. The "more then casual" fan will know what it is when they see it. I like that it doesn't immediately scream "Pearl Jam."
It's definately open for interpretation if nothing else.
And if it was modeled after Plan B then there you go. They are a heavily influenced skate/surf band.

My buddy and I were making fun of somebody at PJ20 we overheard saying they didn't know it was "PJ". Really? I can't see how you could NOT know. It's a P and a J, and you're at a PJ concert. I am shocked there are others who didn't pick up on it.

I didn't realize there were that many people that didn't get it, either.

i was confused day 1 by the billboard with the (what I thought was) cross promotion with vitamin water... but then i realized it was a rain delay on the live art
i actually didn't see the puker over the weekend... i saw the PJ... and I envisioned the shapes moving into 2011... like in a multimedia presentation or something
part of me also sees the sun rising between twin towers... which is kind of a nice image to think of around this weekend... 10 years have passed and hopefully we're all rising above while still remembering

I like the simplicity. I think I like it.
At the same time it reminds me of a dog that I once knew. It had long ears, a big nose, looked like he was smiling and you could never see his eyes. But I guess this is already Gestalt psychology or something.
The worst enemies of music? Money and Mathematics. Combined with music, they both do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. Money makes music cheap, mathematics makes it stupid and predictable.

That sign was TERRIBLE!!! With the Lasic I had done last year, night halos and ambient lights like that make everything fucked up. That sign should have been covered up or broken!

I thought that was the point?
That's very true. Nobody could see that on a shirt walking down the street and say "Oh cool a Pearl Jam shirt".

interesting
wonder if this PJ is jeff's work
i love that we all see different things and it's cryptic
i don't think PJ made it with new fans in mind...
and i love that the diehards will be able to see it and know we're amongst friends
on my way to WI I was in Logan airport and the woman putting me in the xray machine says "oh you're going to the concert too??"
had to laugh... she said she saw tons of shirts that friday and saturday
she then asked me why the avocado - as my checkin person did in WI at the hotel... and I told them it was a secret
This, precisely.
My wife was w/ me in the merch line on Day 1 and asked why anyone would want a shirt w/ a guy puking in the toilet on it.
