it's not ed in the picture. it is the main character in the movie. there is a part when he is at the beach (i think in the morning) and he is doing this. perhaps it is some kind of thai che thing?
There is a similar shot in the movie, but he is not doing this pose. The photo is definitely Ed, just probably taken at the same time they shot the scene.

    Nope.

The photo is from 1998 and is an outake from the Yeild Promo photos.

All nice replies to my question but really, what's it mean? Is it yoga for surfer's? I thought for sure that I would get the answer when I watched ITW but there were no clues in the movie at all. More than anything it looks like some kind of pose that a male would strike during a mating dance. But I don't know which animal that would be. I wonder if this move works for Jill.

OH come now, you all know that Stone taught Ed this mating dance/pose.
Yup, it's true. Stone pulled me aside and taught me as well.
Here’s a question you might need to ask
What’s self destruction and how can we last?

Coming up a which way sign. All good truants must decide."

He's making the international pose for pooping in the wild.
It's recognized by nature poopers all over the world

You are correct. You'll notice this pose on signs in some of the countries national parks. I t marks locations where you can stoop and poop and leave a minimal carbon (or should I say poop) footprint in our parks.

    Good eye!

At the D.C. show this year, Ed spotted a guy in the front row with the Into the Wild shirt on and said "hey thats cool." and recreated the pose on the monitor in front. He didn't say it on the mic. I only hear him cause i was in the 3rd row!

I don't have a link, but he's right. I had seen that picture many times before the movie came out. You can tell it's Eddie from 1998 if you look close anyway.

as for the original question, i don't think it "means" anything. I think it kinda represents Eddie's personality and closeness to nature, but I don't think his pose is meant to symbolize anything specific.

    :)

"But for some reason, he was particularly fascinated by the Quasimoto - the stance invented by Mickey Muñoz. The Quasimoto consisted of crouching near the nose of the board like a hunchback, with one arm extended forward and the other stretched behind. It looked great in the famous Surfer photo of Muñoz by John Severson. But it was not the kind of thing you’d actually do unless you knew you were being photographed."
