What is that pose that Eddie strikes for Into The Wild (and on the Zippo lighter) supposed to mean? What's he doing?

Just wondering.
And if there's something you'd like to do. Oh, just let me continue to blame you.

He's making the international pose for pooping in the wild.

    You guys are both close...

It's actually the international sign for Nature pooping on your surfboard.

I think you may be a bit off. This is actually the stretching technique used before internationally sanctioned thumb wrestling matches.

This has my vote for the one post this year Ed really should see.

    Good god, that's funny.

    I still adore this picture!
Something about it really captures the same feeling of embracing nature that I got from Into The Wild-book, music, and movie. I'm glad that he chose it.
  • All nice replies to my question but really, what's it mean? Is it yoga for surfer's? I thought for sure that I would get the answer when I watched ITW but there were no clues in the movie at all. More than anything it looks like some kind of pose that a male would strike during a mating dance. But I don't know which animal that would be. I wonder if this move works for Jill.

Maybe I have a better chance of finding out what the real lyrics are to Yellow Ledbetter - which if anyone knows that for sure, please post them here along with the answer to the pose question. Probably the answer to both questions is "only Eddie Vedder knows...". But if he wants me to buy his solo tour t-shirt I've got to be able to answer the inevitable question "what the hell is that guy doing on your shirt?". The answer can't be "oh, he's fixin' to take a pooh".

It's from a photo shoot done by Anton Corbin, I think.

It is old surfing pose called a is called a "Quasimoto". It was done on longboards back in the day. Even though I'm an old school bodyboarder, I know my roots. And so does our favorite singer/songwriter/musicman ;-)

    rock on kids.

and have fun at the solo shows - wish I could be there.

Ed is clearly a teeter-totter representing man and nature and the fact that everything is off balance.

I mean c'mon people, this is pretty basic stuff here...

It actually is Ed. If you look inside the album cover it tells you it's him.
