Also, I obviously agree with everyones assessment of how stupid an action it was and am very relieved that no one was reportedly hurt.

i missed the sat one's...did see one sunday that went off into the distance and disappeared.
I was in the last row of 203 and saw it go up. You could hear a gasp when it made contact with the ceiling and stayed there. It was bouncing a little and seemed to move to the lyrics of Call Me a Dog.
I was scanning for an easy safe escape for sure. Not sure how quickly the roof would go up, but my mind was playing out the worst case and it was an eternity of a minute that thing was up there. There would be nothing possible to get the fire out.
Someone near me let the "Nothingman" lantern off ... I'd never seen one before and thought it was really cool ... but the second one during "Call me a Dog" made me realize that setting a flaming bag aloft at a venue with 30,000 to 40,000 people is a really, really, really, really bad idea.
I saw the whole thing from beginning to end. I thought the thing was going to nose dive into the lawn crowd a few seconds after lift-off. Whoever lit it didn't allow the lantern to expand all the way before they "launched" it. After being relieved that no one in the crowd had a flaming bag set them on fire, it was going to be close on whether or not the lantern would clear the wooden pavilion roof ... it didn't.
I had about 5 scenarios run through me head as this thing was thrashing around and none of them were good. I remembered seeing video of the Great White concert and how quickly the fire spread. I was concerned is would start the video screen on fire and start a chain reaction.
When if finally went sideways and dropped a bit, I thought it may get free but then it dropped into the crowd. Luckily, that seemed to be the end of the issue. Props to the guys who put the fire out.
It was just amazing when it was let off during "Nothingman". The second one was just dumb. Seeing it fall as quick as it did was scary as hell. It seemed like someone shot it with a hook and line and then reeled it in.
My family and I were watching the show when this landed on my head. Thank god for my daughter and the man in front of us who pulled it off me and stomped it out! Never saw it coming. Just a extremely bright light. It burned off some of my hair and my nose inside (from breathing it in). My nose still hurts inside...but will recover! Thank god it wasn't any worse!!! I would like to thank Suziemay and the sweet gentleman in front (never got your name) His quick thinking saved not only me but others in the area!!! What a totally STUPID thing to do. Not the place to let these off!!! Thank you again to Suzie and the sweetheart in front of us!!!!! PEACE to all....Mary

Just glad you weren't seriously hurt. What a jackass.

I'm really glad you weren't hurt. I was up on the lawn and saw the thing float to the roof, and was thinking, "I'm ready to run, that roof is made of wood!"
Then I saw it float down and up then it started crashing, didn't see where it went, but saw that it did land in the crowd. Idiot move on the guy's part letting it off.
Kudos to Suzie and those around you that took care of it!
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

De Nada Mary (and thanks for the nice words Suziemay). I wish I would have been able to meet you under better circumstances! One of my friends who I told the story to told me about this post and just wanted to say hello and that I am very glad you are ok. Thankfully nothing worse happened although very sorry to hear about the hair/nose/lip...thought I got to that stupid thing quick enough.
Also agree 1000% that there is nothing cool about those things and everyone that was in our section and saw it land on someone just trying to watch and enjoy a show can attest to that. Whoever lit that to begin with should have their head examined and anyone thinking of doing it in the future, please just dont.

Hey there, wish I thought to thank you in person, everything happened so quickly and then we all just went back to focus on the show. That was pretty awesome what you did, prevented something that could have been really bad. That was a big flame for a tiny tealight.
Thanks for checking in to let us know that you're alright, SuzieMay. And, well done, Brosa. Your quick thinking and action made this pretty much a non-story instead of a truly terrible one.

They sold these things at fireworks stands by us this year. We saw one floating through the sky on July 2nd and were very confused by what it was. Then we saw it at the stand the next day, bought one, and set it on its way in our neighborhood.
And those things TRAVEL. Fast and with good distance. A person mentioned they're usually set off over water, it would have to be a large body of water, like a Great Lake or the ocean to be able to guarantee it would land in water. I wouldn't be surprised if the range of those things is over 5 miles.
If you want to google, try "sky lantern" or even "wish lantern".
People. Please do not light these ANYWHERE. If I saw you lighting one in my neighborhood I would call the police. You lit this thing and then let it float anywhere to set someones home, business or a forest on fire. You are a jack ass.
