Young fans?

samnation wrote:Pardon my n00b status, but I was curious if anyone had any idea if Pearl Jam was getting any newer, young fans coming into the fold. I'm mid-30s and have been listening to the band for years of course, but are "kids today" getting into quality music like PJ at all? I'd like to think the band's fanbase is still growing.
I've got 2 sons aged 12 and 9, who I've had to make copies of some of my PJ CD's to stop them from wrecking mine..... and 1 daughter aged 4 who is not only a PJ fan, but also has a bit of a thing for Eddie0 -
I'm 20 and alot of my friends around my age are into them.0

I'm twenty and have been a huge fan since I was 13. One of mates was a proper metal-head back then and was always showing me different bands, most of them were a tad on the heavy side for me so he advised me to pick up 'Ten'... I suppose I owe him many thanks. But yeah, there doesn't seem to be whole lot of 'kids' who listen to or even know who Pearl Jam are, the few younglings I've meet that have heard of them usually haven't heard the actual music and often start some poorly founded Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam arguement...fools.0

The youngest PJ fan I know is my daughter (12), and yes maybe it's because she's been listening to them since she was in the womb, but I have never forced my music tastes on them. I'd rather they come to it naturally.
She's into all sorts of different music, Foo Fighters, REM, AIC and such...and my 15 yr old is a huge Iron Maiden and System of a Down fan...and everyday I thank god they aren't into RnB like most of their matesA human being that was given to fly.

Her fav's are 3 Days Grace, Paramore & Pearl Jam.Ignoring Rusted Signs0 -
I'm 18 but I have been a fans since I was 13, I have always loved pearl jam ever since I heard one of my older cousins listening to the vs. album. then when i got to see them for the first time and my first concert i was blown away. since then i have never been able to stop listening. i think that pearl jam still can attract young fans but they have to be young fans who appreciate music not just stupid teenagers."Change don't come at once, it's a wave, building before it breaks"0

My 14 year old nephew is a killer guitar player. He didn't know much about PJ. I got him the MSG DVD and now he is a huge McCready fan. He loves all the different guitars he plays, and of course his playing too.
Then I gave him a copy of the PinkPop DVD with Ed diving off the crane, ect... and now my nephew is really hooked. He wants to see them live, but he is bummed that he won't see Ed's stage behaviour from the old days.
That's my 2 cents. (I'm 33 by the way).
Actually, my 1 1/2 year old daughter likes PJ. She reacts and dances more to them than most other music I play. She attended her first show in Vegas '06 in my wife's womb.11-2-2000 Portland. 12-8-2002 Seattle. 4-18-2003 Nashville. 5-30-2003 Vancouver. 10-25-2003 Bridge School. 9-2-2005 Vancouver.

Been a fan since July 2001. I was 16.
How I got into them? When I was a kid my dad would always have the radio set to the local classic rock station (no albums, though), so it was what I explored a lot of real music as a kid, especially on yearly road trips that lasted at least a week. Went through a pop music phase 12-14.
I saw the movie Man on the Moon when I was 14 and it instantly became my favorite move. I went on the net really got into it and eventually I got the Man on the Moon soundtrack and got into REM. Left pop music behind when I discovered something I never realized before - depth in music.
Got a boyfriend at 16 his fav band was Pearl Jam. He might have wanted me to get into them, and because he knew I was into REM, he probably thought it would be easier. I remember hearing CORDUROY and borrowed Vitalogy. Liked it, then got Ten and more and more. He got into them from his sister who is 2 yrs old who was into all sorts of music with tons of CDs.
If it wasn't for my boyfriend, I doubt I would have gotten into them so young. I remember him and I were the only ones who wore PJ shirts around school and most people my age listened to whatever was on the radio. The people who listened to real music would have sad something to me in the hallway or class if they liked them too, but no one did (except for a substitute teacher I would have never expected to be cool!). I did once see a guy with a Yield shirt on at the community college in my senior year and I was so excited I told him so in the hallway.
But then again, I probably would have gotten into them eventually. I didn't like the pop radio and would have probably just discovered them from asking people in the REM message board of good bands to get into. I was a member on it since I was 15. I'm a nonconformist so I would have probably looked around the internet for bands even if I didn't get into REM. If you don't get your bands from friends or the internet, there is very little way to get into good bands.I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened.0 -
double post. Sorry.I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened.0

My son is 7, and he likes them. He's very excited about seeing them live for the first time in SC. He asked if they will play WWS and Big Wave, I told him to make a sign and see if they will play it.0
