factory of faith did nothing for you? brendans death song? those are two of the best on the album! I'm with you on Look Around, it is the most Chilis sounding for sure. Did I Let You Know is the song they played twice in the concert last night. Its a good one too. I also like Police Station, A LOT. That song kicks ass.

I'm telling you guys, I am championing this thing as a whole from day one, I really enjoy it. Glad to hear their sound didn't suffer too much with losing Frusciante, who is my fav rock guitarist btw. Josh is pretty decent.

    Does

Monarchy of Roses verse sound like the Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me verse to anyone else?

Josh fits in perfectly. Great back up vocals on the song they played twice. His energy is Frusciante-esque up there. He was obviously a fan of his, you can tell. He can play though too.

They had to play one song TWICE from the new album becuase "there was a fuck up and the truck wasnt working, thanks for being patient, it's a funny kind of show"

They played the whole album, played Me and My friends, then played that repeat song, then give it away and that was it.

Anthony sounded actually pretty great. Some of the songs on the new album are slower and mature sounding, which is not a bad thing. You could really hear the contrast in sounds, going from the new stuff into the hard rocking me and my friends.

I am down with this album. Its fuckin awesome to me. Welcome back, RHCP. Been listening to them since I was 11, longer than PJ actually.

nice review, i agree w/you near 100%. we must be of similar age, i grew up in LA so RHCP or Social D are the 'hometown' bands, you from so cal?

thanks buddy, i was eating a bowl a cereal this morning and just typed it up quickly.

Im from vancouver born and raised though, not cali. i was 11 in 91. I am really diggin the album. Seeing the movie, welcoming Josh in and SEEING them play the tunes live, really helps. A few of the bridges in the songs are strange and loungey and it gets weird and experimental, its definitely a different sound for them at times, especially with the piano in there. but we knew there would be a new sound with Johns departure. its always good to move forward even 25 years deep in your career.

Really really loving the new album. Factory of Faith is soooo badass!!! Nothing gets better then that bass!! Probably my favorite along with Brendan's Death Song and Dance Dance Dance are just so addicting! Although I love the music in Goodbye Hooray. Did I let you Know also is awesome......overall I just love this album!!!

After seeing them at the Roxy last week and Club Nokia, "Factory of Faith" and "Look Around" were my early favorites off the album. Between the 2 shows, I saw 7 of the new songs live but last night's broadcast sold me even further. Loved "Brendan's Death Song," "Goodbye Hooray," and "Happiness Loves Company" live (didn't see any of those last week.) The movie really did a lot to showcase Josh for me. A couple friends of mine here live nearby him and randomly ended up jamming with him late one night for 3-4 hours a couple years ago, before he was in the band. That guy can really play.

I was 11 in '91 as well, born and raised in LA so I love the Chili Peppers as much as any band. Still have my cassette singles of "Under the Bridge" and "Give it Away," which was some of the first music I ever bought on my own. I'll always love John, but I'm really excited for this new era with Josh.

no not really but in my defense i was at work when i was listening to it, so i was listening and i wasn't. ;) I know i didn't care for the first song at all. I'll have to give it a few more spins I think to get a better opinion on it (preferably when i'm not at work  )

Gave it a few listens and while there are a few duds, its better than I thought it would be. It sounds like a more evolved stadium arcadium.

  • I just bought this tonight (it was on sale at Best Buy for $9.99, can't beat that) and gave the undivided attention from start to finish with the headphones on treatment, and I'm not really sure what to think. I enjoyed it, but it could have been a lot better.

My main gripe is that there is very little guitar on the album. It's all about vocal melodies, drums and bass, and more often than not piano, and the guitar is sort of an afterthought. Now even when Frusciante was in the band they weren't really a "guitar band", as guitar heroics weren't really his style, but he still brought something to the albums and there was noticable guitar. But if you took the guitar completely out of "I'm With You" it would pretty much be the exact same album. Except for maybe "Meet Me At The Corner" which has some nice guitar work in it, but that's it, and it's the second to last song on the album.

I you like cool beats, funky bass lines, and Anthony's vocal melodies then you'll probably like this. Because there is plenty of that, but if you also like some guitar along with it, you might be disappointed. It's like 3/4 of a Red Hot Chili Peppers album.

And I don't say this as some John Frusciante fanboy. RHCP existed before John, and liked them in the mid 90's when he wasn't there, and now that he's gone again I didn't give a second thought to buying the new album. And I'm sure this Josh Klinghoffer is a fine guitarist, they just didn't use him much at all.

In the end I liked it, didn't love it, and I feel like the $9.99 I spent on it was a fair price for the product I got.

I listened to the new album and it didn't do anything for me. Kind of blah. I think some lesser unknown bands have put out much better albums than this so far this summer.
    Another vote for blah.

  • My 2 cents . . .

I've listened to the album about 5 full times through now and I think all-in-all its good, not great, but I think ultimately most of the material is forgettable. That doesn't mean that it isn't still quality though.

They didnt try to just replicate Frusciante-Peppers which I respect. Although I do feel there is a significant lack of guitar on the album, which is replaced by a bunch of Flea and some unique percussion arrangements, Im glad that they didnt just try to act like Frusciante was still there.

I know many people feel their last several albums all sound the same, but I have to say I think many of the tracks on this new album sound quite a bit different than recent material, esp the piano driven songs. To me, it sounds different FOR THE MOST PART which I have to say I wasnt expecting.

My personal favorite track is Even You Brutus? I absolutely love the vocal verses.

I enjoy this album a lot - the guitar isn't front-and-center, which I'm guessing is a conscious decision by the band so as not to "replace" Frusciante, but it gives it a bit of a different sound than their previous few records. There's some forgettable funk workouts, but almost all of their albums seem to contain those. Still, there's some very good tracks like "Brendan's Death Song" and "Dance, Dance, Dance".

I've heard several people say that, and it may be true, but I don't get it. John wasn't their original guitarist, and when he quit after BSSM and they had Dave Navarro, they didn't downplay the guitar on John's behalf, in fact "One Hot Minute" was very heavy with guitar.

I think it might just be the sound they wanted, regardless of John. And I was reading in an interview they were saying that a lot of the songs were written on piano, and even Josh Klinghoffer was writing his songs on the piano. So I don't know if they said "John is gone let's try to not replace him" or if just the writing/recording process led to this sound.

Just seen an interview on Mark Hoppus' show and Flea talks about how music school made him write a bunch on piano.

I don't think it's a replacing John thing either way though. By The Way isn't very guitar centered. SA has guitar all over it, but Froosh still did quite a bit to change it up some.

Doubt the guy lasts more than one more record with them. They'll eventually reunite with Frusciante again. I don't hate the new guy but his guitar solo is pretty lousy on the radio single they've got out. I'd like to see another album with Navarro on guitar, love One Hot Minute.

My thoughts on the album: There are some strong songs, and there are weak/boring ones. At least there's no songs about California.

  • I'm a giant chili peppers fan. Love the new album. Police Station is my jam. Agree with SSS, Klinghoffer is done in an album or two. John's gonna do his own thing for a few years, then come back and make more amazing albums.

For the last few days, its been all RHCP all the time. I've gone up and down their catalog several times. My 3rd favorite band ever.

The new RHCP is great. I forgot to add Brandon's Death song" to my list of likes  . I love when bands try new things. This is good, so was stadium, but it's apples to Oranges as far as comparing. I was really surprised at how well African drums and Piano would work with RHCP music! 8-) Yet, this album still has the early funk elements embedded in it that still remind me of their earlier stuff form "what Hits"? 8-)
