Enjoying a lovely boat ride up to Salem, Mass., where the unlost dogs had an overnight reservation at a cool marina.

Entering harbor THUNK.

Well, that can't be good. Suddenly we aren't moving anymore. :?

And what's that oil slick behind the boat? :o

Call the harbormaster. Put on lifejackets. (The dogs already have theirs on.)

Can't figure out what's going on, then notice we've drifted over a lobster pot and it's tangled on the outdrive. And it's rough out here!

Mr. Unlost reaches to untangle it, drops the boat hook, falls overboard trying to catch it.

I lower the swim ladder while he's tossed around by boat wakes. He scrambles aboard.

Harbormaster arrives, tows us in.

We raise outdrive.

We have no propellers. Just an empty shaft where they used to be. :(

But... The dogs are okay, the beer was unharmed, and it's a beautiful evening here in Salem, Mass. Yes, that Salem... Of the witches.

How's your day going?

Update: just bought Mr. Unlost filet mignon (many oysters & littlenecks for me) he's putting his best face on, considering this has effectively ended the 2011 boating season.

    Good thing there's beer!!!!!!!

    That was one expensive rock.

I always liked MaryAnn. Ginger was too high maintenance, too caught up with herself. MaryAnn is my kind of girl.

Personally I'm a big fan of Lovey Howell.

The boat is a 2007 SeaRay Sundancer 260.

There's a lot of shit out there to hit! One of the guys at the marina was a mile off Gloucester, doing 25 knots in flat calm seas, when a whale surfaced beneath his boat.

Totally destroyed his engines, broke the glass in the boat, but the hull was intact and he didn't sink. And the whale swam off. Probably posted something witty in a thread on the MarineMammal boards.

what's the number at the end mean? is that just a model number, or does that have anything to do with the motor size?

    never mind.

    i googled the motor

i'd have to live on it year round

In most cases it indicates the length of the boat.

    286 is 28 feet, 6 inches
