Jimi Hendrix - ARE YOU EXPERIENCED

We all know how great this album is.

My question to you: is that album the greatest debut album of all-time?

I'd love to hear your answers and what you like/love about this album.

To me, it's the greatest debut album of all-time. Mitch Mitchell's drumming on the "Manic Depression" and "Fire" is mind-blowing. Jimi is Jimi, no need to say how great he is. "Red House" is an awesome blues song.

depends what version imo.... if we are talking about the original pressings without bonus tracks, I think the US version has a better track order... and has purple haze compared to the UK one.... however the UK has Red House which i think is one of the best blues songs ever (More inclined to say i listen to Valleys of Neptune version more though). Heaps of great debut albums though, pearl jam, Audioslave, Temple of the dog, The Doors, REM, led zeppelin.... but its definitely up amongst the best... speaking of hendrix did you ever end up getting and of the other albums that have been released since the studio albums? I'm quite looking forward to this winterland boxset! hendrix in the west not so much though.

I bought the West Coast Seattle Boy anthology from Pop Market. I haven't really gotten anything else besides that. I might get the Woodstock set from Pop Matters; it's the DVD and CD collection for $16. Sounds like a really good deal for 2 DVDs and 2 CDs. The Winterland looks to be a really good set. I just wish I had a job so I can get all of that music, instead, I have to wait for deals like the Pop Market one.

The version I'm used to for "Are You Experienced" is the one they did for the reissue's last year, where it combined both the US and UK version. That's the one I'm talking about.

Hahah sounds like you need to find yourself a job.... pretty much all my money goes to records off amazon... got that 8LP boxset for hendrix pre-ordered and the nirvana one to :)... If you havent got it yet try and get band of gypsys to... its quite good :D

I bought Band of Gypsys from the record shop down the street from school. It was in real good condition and no skips! :D Sounds good, of course.

I'm just hoping I can find a job when school starts so I can get more Hendrix, the Nirvana set, and the Super Deluxe U2 set, not the uber one.

  • Without a doubt, Are You Experienced is the best debut album of all time. If you look at any Jimi Hendrix greatest hits or if you ask the majority of people which song of his do you like, it's most likely off this album. Of course, since he had so few, maybe this one was oversaturated in the market. If The Doors only had 3 albums or Pearl Jam only had 3 albums, their debut might be considered the best as well. But there are so many worldwide hits on Jimi Hendrix debut.

Well, sort of. It includes all the songs that were on the UK version, but not the same versions. The UK album was mono, and had a different version of "Red House". The tapes are lost so it's never been on CD, but there's a homemade "deluxe edition" on Demonoid that includes a superb LP transfer.

    I
    Are You Experienced
    Ten
    Appetite
  • The answer to your question is yes.

I have a mint condition, 1967 Track records original of the UK vinyl pressing. Gives me trouser swellage every time I look at it. I don't play it: I play my Polydor mid- seventies vinyl copy (a 'twofer' with Axis: Bold as Love) instead.

Great album and I would never argue with someone naming it as #1, but I feel the other 3 I mentioned do a better job of laying the groundwork for the bands' future work, while still being equally as kickass and with all of them being pretty flawless from beginning to end that was the deciding factor

Maybe try again? I just think it's pretty difficult to make a better straight ahead, dirty rock and roll record. Not sure it's been done.

I listened to it four times and didn't care for it. Normally my fourth time listening to an album, I know if I like it or not, and Appetite was one I didn't like.

Yeah Appetite was definitely not indicative of what GnR would go on to do, but it was a masterpiece. I like Led Zeppelin I but I actually prefer II over it and I'm really not a huge Hendrix fan. I'd probably also throw out Pretty Hate Machine, Murmur, and Kill 'Em All.

I don't think "really good" does it justice. But... it's all covers of old blues songs that they tried to not give credit for, so for that reason I might have to go with RUX'ed or Ten.
