U.S. Releases Graphic Images to Deter Smokers
The rate of smoking in America has been cut roughly in half, to about 19 percent, from 42 percent in 1965. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death, killing 443,000 Americans a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Each day, the government says, an estimated 4,000 youths try their first cigarette, and 1,000 a day become regular smokers.

Will such a legislation by our government prevent smokers from continuing to smoke? Probably not for heavy smokers but for the youths of America it may make a difference as in they can see the the result if they continue to smoke. What legislation will be next grafic images on alcholic beverages etc.

Good idea or bad idea as smoking has an impact on the overall health in America. Smoking is such a tough habit to quit, something like this could help.

Wouldn't putting pics of diseases on condoms be the opposite of this, as condoms prevent those diseases?

the tobacco companies knowingly produced and mass marketed a known addictive substance and a known carcinogen for decades and even denied their knowledge of this before government committees on several oxccasions...

idk...seems kinda stupid to me. Since the age of 5 i've been told how bad cigarettes are; the science is there and nobody's stupid and people will smoke if they want and should have the right to...this won't do anything in my book. Shouldn't we start showing pictures of terrible car accidents on the side of a bottle of jack? That would deter drunk driving

I got your point, AND I'm fucking with ya ;)

But personally, I'm with you. I'm all for personal responsibility and legalization of all drugs, as long as the facts are out there. Even at 20, I've seen more kids fuck up their lives with alcohol than I have with drugs.

No, I said "fuck up their lives with alcohol". They fucked it up.

However, I do think those that find themselves addicted should be able to get help. I'm for personal responsibility, but have no problem lending a hand when somebody's fucked up. I guess I think it's better that people get support for their issues, even if they may or may not be partially to blame for getting themselves into those issues. A non addicted society is a productive one, better for everybody.

Stop arguing just to argue. I don't know what keeponrockin really thinks, but based on his sentence structure, the only conclusion you can draw is that those who took the drugs are to be blamed. The subject (and thus the actor) in the sentence is the "kids" not the "drugs".

    Peace

This is an interesting conundrum for the government. Since they don't want to make it seem like they are owned by big lobbyists like tobacco, they need to do these types of things. But on the other hand, they do not want the money to stop coming in from tobacco. isnt it like a dollar for every pack sold? So my theory, and get your tin foil hats on for this, is that this is something the TOBACCO companies suggested because maybe they did some research and it was found to be less effective than other things that could have been done...
That way the government gets to say...see we care and the tobacco companies don't lose crap loads of money.

Either way, let people smoke if they want to...seriously...are they going to put this kid on every happy meal

yes it matters, many people were saying here that the government should get out of the business hair. getting out of the business hair also means allowing them to advertise anywhere just like any other business.
