I'm ok with who I am and can take the high road, not always easy when people are mean.
Since recent stuff I learned just not engage if people insult me
seems to work the best in the end, it was good advice... thank you.
I don't like getting into trouble with the mods they scare me :? sorry Sea and Kat ....

Hey I think I might stop quoting people too cause then they feel compelled to write back and
get personal.

Actually, to be technical, it didn't even last past the OP since you questioned it as the first reply. Nicely done!!!hippiemom = goodness0 -

Not sure which thread you're refering to but what I think the moderators are saying is not that we shouldn't have strong opinions or radical ideas or push the envelope of thought but that we don't make personal attacks on other board members. It's one thing to have strong feeling for or against an idea and another to make attacks or use name calling. I'm pretty sure it's the latter that we are being asked to avoid.
For those of us with strong convictions, it's easy for us to get our buttons pushed or to want to lash out against those with whom we disagree. For example, if you're very concerned about environmental issues, in your inner dialog you might think people who don't care about the environment are generally full of ... (you get the idea). BUT, saying that here or on any forum or even to anyone in person gains you nothing. Instead, maybe try to work hard at making sure you know what you're talking about and try your best to present counter ideas. It's easier to make a difference by educating than it is by belittling. I even think, in the long run, it feels better.
Others issues are less pragmatic. For me, race and sexual preference predjudice is totally wrong. I'll come to the defense of anyone I know is being attacked for such reasons. I'll call someone on that sort of thing big time but I won't call them names or be abusive in return.
If I ever forget to follow my own thoughts here, I hope someone here will call me on it- please, just don't call me a jerk (I hate that- just ask my wife!)

So another tread closed due to the low road. i love how people complaint about both parties being stuck in their way but then do the same thing here.0

i don't think so. in that tread people were making fun of people appearances.[/quote]

true but i do think its unfair that people are making fun of someone appearance. how would people have felt if we talked about obama appearance.0 -

Personally, I was using "eyes" as an allegory for a lack of intelligence. She has that same vacant, distant, unintelligent expression on her face that George W. Bush frequently had. It's like she's not interested in hearing any new ideas. She suffers from a lack of curiosity.Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

i am pretty sure that if someone made a thread about how crazy saddam hussein looked - it would never get locked given the same discussion ...
having said that - i'm indifferent to it ... i am more concerned with the instantaneous locking of good threads simply because someone can't take the so called high road ...0 -
This is why name-calling is never ok here. It's the one thing that consistently PISSES people off and puts an end to any reasonable discussion. Derogatory comments are not allowed here, ever. Personal comments at each other are not allowed here, ever. When a new word becomes derogatory, it's not ok to use it.
Take the high road, discuss the topic, stop derailing threads with spammy comments and take personal comments to PM. A Moving Train is for political and news discussion.

I honestly believe that more people need to read Bob Hope's autobiography "Don't Shoot It's Only Me." A true patriot (hey, if you've done that many USO tours to call you anything less is an insult) who believed in the power of humor to deflate even the biggest of egos. The man made fun of practically every president in the 20th century.Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

but who defines derogatory!? ... the word in question here today was a finalist in oxford dictionary's 2009 word of the year ... it is also defined as what many have said in the locked threads ...
i just feel that context needs to be applied otherwise words like liberal, socialist, treehugger can all fall in the same category as it was defined today ...0 -

this. I've seen all of those above words mentioned in a negative context just as much as the T-word.Rock me Jesus, roll me Lord...

I think you're serious but I could be wrong. This isn't going to be a debate though.
The word was not used respectfully or lovingly or jokingly. HOW a word is used is important. The word is used derogatorily and to diminish another person or persons and their ideas. That makes it derogatory. Who decides? Your friendly neighborhood moderators decide.
This isn't about one word. This is about how you all speak to each other here. See the Posting Guidelines. We've said we think it can be better here and doesn't have to be like the rest of the internet...which is sometimes, I'm sorry to say, just garbage.
Hence, the high road. We're all Pearl Jam fans here and it can be better.
Thank you.Falling down,...not staying down0 -
context gets lost in text...and people forget that sometimes.
I make asshole remarks all the time in real life...but the difference is, when I say it to your face, you can see my face not being serious, but joking...when i type it here...i just seem like an asshole...unless you are also an asshole and understand the whole asshole remark conversion process.
surprisingly, not everyone is an asshole. well, most are...but not everyone... who knew?Mansfield, MA - Jul 02, 2003; Mansfield, MA - Jul 03, 2003; Mansfield, MA - Jul 11, 2003; Boston, MA - Sep 29, 2004; Reading, PA - Oct 01, 2004; Hartford, CT - May 13, 2006; Boston, MA - May 24, 2006; Boston, MA - May 25, 2006; Hartford, CT - Jun 27, 2008; Mansfield, MA - Jun 28, 2008; Mansfield, MA - June 30, 2008; Hartford, CT - May 15, 2010; Boston, MA - May 17, 2010; [EV - Providence, RI - June 15, 2011; EV - Hartford, CT - June 18, 2011]; Worcester, MA - Oct. 15, 2013; Worcester, MA - Oct. 16, 2013; Hartford, CT - Oct. 25, 2013; Boston, MA - August 5, 2016; Boston, MA - August 7, 2016...0
