I'd say all the answers you need are in the band's lyrics.
The first 5 songs on Backspacer kind of give you sense that the names of the songs are about drugs, Gonna See My Friend, Get Right, The Fixer, Johnny Guitar & Just Breathe. Anyone else ever thought of that?
Be careful linking everything to drugs, people will think you're a drug addict, , though a valid point.
If I had to guess...I say Ed still enjoys the occasional joint, it seems that he jokes about it an awful lot. Mike used to have a prescription (i think it was prescription) drug problem. However, it seems to me that drugs are not a big part of this band b/c look at all the other bands that have had drug problems, most of them are not still around. I think music is the focus with PJ, not partying.

Except only one of those songs is actually even loosely related to drugs, and that one (Gonna See My Friend) is about an intervention, ie getting someone OFF drugs.
So, there's that ...
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
I remember reading somewhere that MIke was really bad in 92. Check out the rotterdam video; mike plays butt naked.
But I know he cleaned himself up in 95 sometime (awesome article in guitar magazine).
Stone just seems like he loves his heiniken (sp?).
I've actually had beers with Jeff but I've never read anything about him having problems.
Ed is defintely a drinker/smoker. I think his darkest days were in 93 when he refered to it as his jim morrison phase.
Matt, no clue.
I think it was an early show I was listening to (maybe Drop in the Park?) when Eddie said something about doing heroin before they played Deep. Don't know the exact quote. I know Eddie has talked about doing different types of drugs. As someone mentioned before, he spent a good 5 minutes in Hartford talking about weed.
Like others have said about Mike, getting cleaned up in 95 and then having the prescription problem in 2000. Wasn't "Habit" and "Save You" written about Mike or related to him?

I know that Habit was about his addiction but I am not sure about Save You. It seems reasonable too.

Save you seems to be more of a collective response to all of his friends he has dealt with rather than one person directly.

yeah, but somewhere (can't remember where) eddie specifically mentions that save you was about Mike ... it may have been at a concert, it may have been in a magazine, i just can't remember it all anymore. lol.
but like all things PJ, you take and make of it what makes sense for you (like life in general, i reckon).
PS - Does anyone have (have a link to?) the short video clip that MTV used to run as a spot ad all the time (circa '94) where Eddie is giving some interview at a table completely covered in beers, and then falls face down (passes out?) in to the table?
I STG i remember something to that effect.
This was back in the "bloated like Jim Morrison" days.
lol.

I seem to recall reading an interview with Ed where he discussed GSMF specifically and said that it was not about drugs but about music being like a drug -- being addictive and having the ability to affect mood and outlook.
As for the rest: In all seriousness, I do not think the band would have lasted this long if there were any serious drug use for an extended period. Come on: Look at Keith Richards, look at Ozzy Osbourne, look at any number of acts that have imploded or disappeared.
I'm not including alcohol or marijuana in this category. As far as I can tell, I am one of about ten people in this country who do not smoke pot, so I'm not going to pretend that it is a taboo subject.

Lol. hell yes it is.
I don't know where that specific part with his head hitting the table is, and maybe it was just "good" editing by MTV to make it look like passing out (maybe he was just hanging his head in disbelief) but they ended a spot with this high intensity music (shit, it could have been "Go" for all i remember) and the song just stops abrupt at the end, and the very last clip they cut to was Ed hitting that table.
GOOD LORD HE IS "DRUNK" THERE ... all though from the start of that Pt3 clip i get the feeling he was a "little" more than just drunk ... but maybe he was just 7-12 hours deep in to the drink. lol.

Found this on another forum and thought it was a relevant response (in defense of MDMA which i happen to think is an ama-amazing drug) ...
No such thing as a "bad" ecstasy pill. MDMA is MDMA, no arguments. If the pill wasn't ecstasy (MDMA), then it wasn't a bad ecstasy pill that caused the death. It was a bogus pill, made of shit, for cheap, and sold as ecstasy. Why is it that when someone dies from taking untested drugs in pill form, it suddenly becomes a "bad" ecstasy?"
Not that I don't understand what you are saying, just reiterating what seems like either pure ignorance or deliberate spinning on the media's part in cases like this. MDMA is MDMA. It can't be "bad". Either it is, or it isn't.
Just saying. And FWIW, I don't know *anyone* (literally, even just the average college \ casual druggie round these parts) who is still doing pills of "X" ... *everyone* around here has access to and seems to exclusively buy & sell pure MDMA in powdered form (or put in to a clear capsule). Although some people are selling something called "Methylone" (M1, bk-MDMA) which is a Shuglin (though not in PIHKAL) drug, and,as the name bk-MDMA, a MDMA analogue-of-sorts (stick with the real thing, imho).

The word "marijuana" is spoken at the end of the studio version of Of the Girl.
Mike's currently sober but has had prescription drug and "hard drug" issues in the past. I think he's been sober since at least 01 or 02...I read an interview where he said he didn't remember much about the Binaural sessions because he was on a lot of prescription medication at the time.
Eddie's talked about doing acid in the past and I wouldn't be surprised if he dabbled in other hard drugs as well. Same with all the other members. With the exception of Mike though, I don't thing any other band member has had any public issues with addiction. Ed likes to talk about marijuana a lot...I forgot the exact quote but Ed once said marijuana was an okay drug because it was from the Earth. I think as recently as 09 he mentioned smoking weed with Ben Harper.
