Hi everyone.

I haven't read anything about The Smashing Pumpkins yet. so i started to think if the public of Pearl Jam and the one of the Smashing Pumpkins were that different, and i don't think so.

I just want to know what do you think of them or their music. Feel free to put anything you want of them in here.

Big difference between them is that Billy Corgan's a douche bag and the guys in PJ aren't. I listened to both of them. I was 12-13 when Mellon Collie came out and played that thing almost non-stop for the entire year. They're definitely both emotionally driven artists. To over simplify things you could say that the Smashing Pumpkins did depression the same way PJ's early stuff did anger.

I was a huge fan of The Smashing Pumpkins. I listened to all their albums up to and including Adore. I listened to Machina, but not much. And I have Zeitgeist, but I only sort of listened once through. With that said, I'm not much a fan of their present set up or whatever you wanna call it. When D'arcy and then James left, that was basically the nail in the coffin.

But like I said, big fan.

I actually really like this band. Meloncollie is still one of favourite albums, Thru the Eyes of Ruby and Love are awesome songs. I was however a little disppointed when I saw them live but in all fairness Jimmy and Billy were the only 2 original people left and they wanted to play alot of their new songs, which is fair enough. Still a very good band, liked Eye off the Lost Highway soundtrack too. Sorry for crapping on folks. :D

Regardless of what SP may have become in many people's eyes, 'Siamese Dream' is simply one of the greatest albums of the 90s, there just isn't a bad track on that album. 'Gish' and 'Mellon Collie' are really good too, I saw them on the Mellon Collie and Zeitgeist tours and they were both really good shows.

Yes, Billy may have turned into a bit of a cartoon character these days but if you look past some of the interviews and the ego, he is capable of writing some awesome tunes. I still have everything up to the 'Teargarden' songs and, even though it may not be as good as the 90's SP, I'll still check out any new stuff they release.

I hated Mellon Collie and still only like a few songs from that album. After that disappointment, I stopped following them. Gish is probably my favorite of theirs followed closely by Pisces Iscariot. There are several songs off Siamese Dream that just don't do it for me. Yes Billy is an ass, but so are a lot of the bands I listen to and that really doesn't influence me when I pick music to listen to. It's all about the music itself and SP just fell off too much for my liking.

I really liked this band. Once they changed the line-up replacing D'arcy and James, it got sketchy, but still had "the sound" (since frankly its hard to hear big differences when you change gutarists and bassists) but when Billy kicked out Jimmy Chamberland, it changed into a different band completely. Drummers, specifically very intricate drummers, are very much missed when they are replaced... at least by me.

I'm glad to see all the people who also like the SP like me, I'm a huge fan of them and all their records, especially Mellon Collie and Adore, but I think some of you are judging too nonsensical Billy Corgan or not knowing enough to say that he is an idiot or a bad musician.

You have to recognize his musical greatness, both through the years and subject to change, as they did absolutely all the bands. May like or dislike their new music and we can compare with the old, but I do not just judge him a moron for that.
Consider that all bands, including Pearl Jam, changed through time, we agree that did not change as much as the SP, but not because of that you have to hate them.

I think Billy Corgan is a great composer and writer, and has an enviable find out, take into account their true love for music and his frustration at the time of separating the SP.
There are few cases of authors who return their bands with new formations, we agree that it is something completely different, but do not crucify him for it.
Instead we have to open our minds to his new music and what the music means to him.

Love Gish and Siamiese Dream. Mellon Collie is one of those albums I like in theory. It's got quite a few kickass tunes, but needs the fat trimmed for me.

Billy Corgan is SP, but Jimmy C leavin really changes their sound. They were never gonna sound too much different without him. He has a very distinct drumming style. Could be a good thing if Billy can find a good groove with the new style, which I don't think he has yet. I

Big difference between them is that Billy Corgan's a douche bag and the guys in PJ aren't.

They both have had their issues.

I saw Billy in '96 and he was an asshole to the audience.

I saw Pearl Jam in '98 and Ed was an asshole to the audience.

I think I can honestly say that Ed has mature a tab bit...at least that's what I gathered from his live show a couple weeks ago.

I would hope that Billy has grown up over the past 15 years.

    I'll fill him in:

this board is full of SP/BC haters. To the point of ridiculousness. To hate a band because of the supposed personality of the main member is stupidity. I think a large part of Billy's public persona is a joke being played on the general public by him. Not to mention, the public perception of ANYONE in the public eye is only a small percentage of who that person actually is. Take Ed for example: he was pigeon holed into being an angry left-wing whiner. Was he? Maybe a bit. But do you think that's who he was 24/7? Absolutely not. Do you think all Angelina does is adopt African kids? Obviously not.

However, yes, he knows he's a good songwriter, and so what? Do you hate Kobe for knowing he's a good b-ball player? NO. Same thing.

Bottom line is Billy is a fantastic songwriter and a music industry visionary (whether you like the songs on Teargarden so far is irrelevant, the platform is new and exciting).

I thought he was a dick for quitting the music industry because of Britney and the Boy Bands, but then I figured out it wasn't them as competition, it was that the general music public didn't appreciate anything but hit singles. No one gave a shit about track 11 anymore. And that's what frustrated him, and I can relate. And that's why he's doing what he's doing. Love the songs or hate them, you HAVE LISTENED TO THEM. that's all he wants.

I like the pumpkins. I've never seen them live though. I think Mellon collie and Siamese are fantastic records. Pisces Ascariot was really good too. I liked adore alot, cause it had a darker somber edge. I don't know too much about Machina 1 & 2, never got around to hearing them really. I thought Zeitgeist had some good songs, and even the tear garden cd has some descent songs and they are giving that away free.

I know, haha. I just saw a look of generalized knocks against SP so I countered it with my own sweeping generalization.

EDIT: Plus SD is one of my all-time favorite albums :P

  • I've trashed him for shit he's said too. He was on MuchMusic (Canada's MTV), and said "I'd like to thank Our Lady Peace for keeping our music alive up here in Canada".

Then when they came to Winnipeg in the late 90's, he made a joke about how we lost the Jets. Chorus of boos. Then he took a shot at the giant picture of the Queen we had in the arena.

Then back in 2000 for Summersault (who they co-headlined with OUR LADY PEACE!!), he made yet ANOTHER crack about the Jets. Another chorus of boos. At the time I thought "why does this guy like pissing off his audience? doesn't he understand he's taking the steam out of his own show?". But as I've learned more about him, he just likes to rile up audiences, it's his type of humour.

Not mine, personally, but whatever. To me that would be like being invited to someone's house for dinner and telling them their pot roast sucked.

I really wish he'd come back. Especially now that the Jets are back! LOL

i think he is one of the best musicians ever!! did you read "blinking with fists"? it's AWESOME!!
his writing power and skill is something incredible, when he played "a song for a son" here in Argentina i can't help it and i almost cried, really something extraordinary.

did you have the chance to see them live?
