"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
He was telling lots of stories and cracking jokes all evening. He also expressed how happy he was to be back home, so happy in fact that he was just happy to do laundry in his own home..well.....
He was truly appreciative of the home town reception that he got this evening and kept referring back to that.
Also mentioned that X will be opening up for PJ on their South America tour.
For me it was a truly great show.
C'mon by Rock Bottom Brewery tomorrow in Seattle for day 2 of the pre-party.
But first off, a shout out to Glen Hansard, whose performance as a whole was great, whose voice is powerful beyond belief, and whose cover of Astral Weeks is simply blistering. I could not believe what I was watching. My God.
Ed hit the stride on the uke quickly, and Sleeping By Myself, Longing To Belong, and the two covers between them were especially strong. The only interruption was when Ed told the crowd to get the pictures out of the way, had fun with it (flipped off the cameras), and then they persisted well after he told the crowd to stop, but that wasn't too big of a deal.
But as good as those were, and as cool as Deadman was, the next three songs, Around The Bend, Unthought Known, and Betterman were simply incredible. Around The Bend is one I did not expect to hear for a long time, Unthought Known, I think, is one of their two best songs of the millennium (along with Inside Job), and Ed just killed this one solo. Betterman was an interesting, beautiful new take on a somewhat overdone song that has very special meaning to me. I absolutely loved it. This stretch of three was the highlight for me. Millworker, which followed, was great too.
The Into The Wild set was really cool, as I've never seen those songs done live before, and I really enjoy that movie and the album. Just before Rise he talked about the...umm...loss of male genitals, which was a running joke for the rest of the night. Hilarious!
I think the encore speaks for itself. Three classic covers, a more obscure one that's just as good, and then a killer 1-2-3 that rivals my highlight above.
The second encore was as I imagine it has been throughout the tour, but to reiterate, Ed seemed genuinely humbled by the reception he got, as he told as before and after Big Hard Sun, and then he gave us the short but sweet Dream... before leaving.
Can't wait to do it again tomorrow!
Well worth the drive from Denver! Met some great folks at the pre-party, during and after the show. Can't really afford tomorrow's show but I plan on going sight seeing unless someone wants to donate a pair of tickets!
Thanks. Eddie!
First off, as others said, Glen was fantastic, and got the ovation that he truly deserved. He is a great artist and I could easily tell why Eddie picked him as the opener. In fact, it was ironic that I invited a good friend to go with me, and Glen Hansard was one of his favorite artists. And he didn't even know until a week ago that Glen was opening for Eddie. I especially liked how Glen included the PJ tags into the Van Morrison cover. I recognized the line from Smile right away, but it took me a while to remember that the second line was from Faithful. I am a fan of Glen Hansard now.
I don't need to do too much Eddie recapping, since I would be repeating whats already been said several times. But while I am sad he didn't play a couple of songs I would've loved to hear, he performed the songs that he chose just amazing, and his voice was sounding just as strong as ever. I even shed tears after his renditions of Just Breathe and The End, just because they sounded so good. As well as Unthought Known, he can really pull that one off by himself. Porch sounded awesome by himself, and the Glen duets were spot on.
I am real glad that at the end he showed much appreciation of his home city, and we reciprocated. I wasn't sure if Eddie felt that Seattle crowds were weak (Seattle crowds are weak regardless of what the sporting event/musician is). I could see that Eddie looked truly humbled, but he received the reception that he deserved.
You Saturday night people are in for a real treat!

"Hey what's up. In the show, thought i'd give you a little personal update. Ironicly the worst show of the tour. Got into it with the usher for standin' up. I mean, the crowd just can't stand up during the encore. The crowd in Portland, the whole crowd was up during the entire encore. Now i got some old hag minding the seats "you gotta sit down here", all this bullshit, weakest crowd ever, weakest, I mean it's unbelievable. I kinda walked out on the show and then i came back in just to see how maybe there will be something ...play something cool, but oh dude, you didn't miss anything tonight. Portland, ALLTIME. great energy crowd dude like i said last night, from encore till end and before...entire venue out of their seats. tonight, you can't even stand up. "oh you gotta sit down" I was like dude, what the fuck are you talking about, it's retarted. they're trying to whislte and cheer. didn't miss anything. the setlist, nothing to write home about. hopefully tomorrow will be a magical night but tonight, unless pearl jam comes out and plays some shit, um, it was over hyped. wish you were in Portland, tonight, like i said, i am in the lobby, second encore going on right now, but it, it's lackluster dude. I couldn't even stand up. but when i did stand up, usher came over and they were like trying to kick me out for standing up. I was like "dude, what the fuck are you talking about, it's the fucking encore?" It was retarted. and um, that wasn't even disrespectful, im not even fucked up and shit. It was, unfortunatley you know, um, Seattle didn't represent. hotter chicks in Seattle than Portland, but, the Portland crowd was fucking awesome and so was the setlist and this is like honestly, worse than San Diego, than the hangover show.
Still good, but it was getting really good, but the ushers and the crowd completely didnt go there. i didn't get it. ANyways, just giving you the update. I didn't get you a poster, as excited as Seattle was they sold out posters before i even walked in. and then they're like, this lame, it's unbelievable. I mean, Seatles TYT, I'm not baggin' it, but i'm like dude, you really didn't bring it. it's like, it's the weakest crowd"
I have been to 4 ev shows now.. he was in the best mood for this one. The crowd was the best behaved by a mile. after the funny request for the flashes to stop after his middle finger posing, there were actually no flashes. Yelling out was at a bare minimum. Especially during key moments. A lot probably has to do with no alcohol allowed in the seated area.
The ovations though were thunderous though. At none of my other ev shows did I stand so much. About 10 standing ovations.
It was the best of the ev shows I have been to. The sound in that joint is breahtaking.
You could hear a pin drop. I didn't hear one person cough or sneeze - the whole crowd was transfixed. It was so good. Have they been doing that all tour?

It must have been bad enough having to hear that message the first time let alone transcribing it for everyone else to read. I feel a little dumber than I did five minutes ago...
They also did it at the Wiltern in LA and it was great. Took the crowd about 30 seconds to finally settle down but once they did there wasn't a peep. Did not do it in Santa Barbara but not surprised since it was an outdoor show. I thought I read they did it at either SD or Long Beach but not sure.

Eddie did "shush" the crowd before he got started.
all my hopes, anger, pride and shame
Wow, your friend sounds like a self-entitled meathead (as well as a bit sexist and agist). Actually, in Portland, most the crowd sat through the show, including much of the encore, which was perfect for the spirit of a solo tour that attempts to create a giant campfire setting. I say cheers to the ushers for making your bud think of the people behind him. And did he really repeatedly say "retarded"? Wow. Someone polish up the Darwin Award.
Also, this trip was a bit of a personal triumph for me - I have good friends in Seattle, and have been here many times since 1989 - and I have always dreamed of having a Pearl Jam experience in the city, but this dream has been thwarted on several occasions, by major difficulties in my life, and stuff happening. Having tickets and not being able to make it across the water to enjoy them has been really tough. So this year, making it to Seattle, enjoying the town, as ever, and getting to see Eddie sing, without any great dramas or tragedies has been brilliant. OK, so I never got to see Pearl Jam play the town, but I feel after last night I have finally laid this to rest, and can relax about the dream!
Glen Hansard was brilliant, and Astral Weeks is one of my all time favourite songs - so that was a great opening to the show, that had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.
All in all, superb music - being able to soak up every twist and turn of the voice from a singer who is in such a league of excellence right now that it is very hard to think of an artist who can compare - to what Eddie can do with his voice. Great stuff!
Send my credentials to the house of detention
Mr. Voicemail, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
FWIW the show was amazing, the crowd was amazing (except the drunk guy in the 3rd tier, right side that would randomly yell crap nobody could understand.. maybe that was your friend?).
Can't wait for tonight
That is a drunk vm if there ever was one.
