Don't know. It won't let me scroll down to see the explanation after I've made my choices. Me thinks all those little programs that aren't classified above, like farm subsidies, NASA, NOAA, etc. maybe?

without reading the choices, I would fund a program that teaches every govt office how to produce their program services more efficiently. It shouldn't cost $2 to administer $1 worth of govt services.

Get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and save $12,000,000,000 a month. I'd start there. Then cut ALL foreign aid 10% a year for ten years. Not sure what it is today.

Obama’s 2010 Federal Budget Explained in Plain English
    by Rebekah Manning

**Note** You can find the 2011 Federal Budget explained in plain English here.

The US Federal Budget for 2010 was released today, February 26,2009. This article focuses primarily on the discretionary spending. Of the

discretionary budget, roughly half of spending goes to the US Department of Defense with the remaining money divided among 22 other departments. As one of a very small number of Americans who have read through the 140 page docket outlining the plan, I have analyzed and detailed it below. Overall, Departments like Agriculture show great detail while other departments like that of State use broad language and provide few clues into what programs will actually receive the billions. Unsurprisingly the National Intelligence Agency has no details about either total budget nor allocation. The mandatory spending, which totals an additional $2.184 trillion, allocates $695 billion to social security, $453 billion to Medicare, $290 billion to Medicaid, $11 billion in a potential disaster relief fund, $164 billion to pay off interest on the national debt and the remaining $571 billion to miscellaneous expenses.
    2009 Federal Budget Breakdown

Overall, close to half of the discretionary federal budget goes to the Department of Defense. When the

    Obama 2010 Budget Breakdown

funds from the Recovery Act are added in, The Department of Education is allocated a vast amount of money to help improve public school and increase access to higher education. The Department of Transportation also see a great deal of money for programs that will improve air traffic control and create an efficient and green fast interstate rail system.

Exactly Cincy - everything in our society has to be black and white, good and bad or polarized. It's far easier to agree or disagree with ideas if you don't actually examine them or discuss them thoroughly but instead just glaze over with a one word characterization instead.

I suggest American citizens their criminal activities, thus reducing the police force, judicial & penitentiary systems and Billions of dollars in savings.

I would also fund the legalization of pot resulting in an increase of tax dollars.

No, I wouldn't advocate an "all or none" approach. I just posted that to illustrate where the money goes. The debate on what to cut and by how much is the challenge. And I welcome your suggestions or thoughts. Too often these types of very complex issues are over simplified, into as another poster stated, black and white. Nothing is black and white and the debate we're missing is, what are we really talking about? How much? What is it?, etc. Very frustrating, I think, for those of us who care. And to pretend that the revenue side doesn't need to be or can't be part of the solution is, in my opinion, disingenious, at best.

    Peace.

Defense needs to be trimed big time. Also get our Military out of Germany and other countries. I mean do we really need to be in Germany? One thing that I do not understand is Federal Transit & Federal Highway. Shouldn't these two pay for themselves with tolls and transit tickets?

The unsustainable will eventually cut the floor out from underneath itself. It's time to start thinking very differently about how we do things. Limited resources and the effects of peak oil and climate change will make most of the arguments about cutting this and that moot in due time. Learn some basic skills, participate in local economy, learn to live more simply. And as my wise and aged father always tells me- HAVE FUN!

Very astute. Don't forget what happens when the ocean reaches an unsustainable level of CO2. Live simply so that others may live. And have fun.

    Peace.

    It's still not enough.

Maybe they should consider areas that affect our budget the most. Military, Social Security, Medicaid. Then I'll know they are serious.
