What an incredible experience from start to finish. This was the first Eddie Vedder concert I can say that I attended with my wife, which was very special for us. We had good seats – Orchestra Row L.
Glen was fantastic to open the show. Really talented and really funny.
Ed's set blew us away. So many highlights to wrap my head around right now. The no mics, no amplifier duet was unreal. Felt like we were at a camp fire singalong. I never thought 3,000 people could be so quiet. Immortality was flawless – a personal highlight. All the uke songs are brilliant live. Ed sure does know how to tell a story – stepping on thorns, sheep, Keith Richards etc... Spectacular venue. We had a great time. I'm sure I will come back and add a few more thoughts.

    Thank you very much, Ed.

Another great performance by Eddie! Even though I was in the upper balcony (literally in the second to last row) the show never lost that intimate feeling for me. Maybe it's because I was dead center to the stage and had an isle seat that allowed me to really enjoy the experience, who knows.

Highlights for me were; You're True, Wishlist (even though Ed fucked it up), I Am Mine and Santa Cruz.

Notables: there seemed to be an abundance of posters still remaining after the show ended so I would be willing to bet we'll see this puppy available in the goods section after the tour for sure. And the EV playing cards seemed available every where I looked and I was able to snag a deck for myself during the first few songs of Glen's set. Being a poker player the deck looks to be quality and the packaging is really sharp and well worth the $15 investment. To be honest I'm kicking myself for not buying two decks now...

As usual it was a awesome show and it's made me all the more anxious for Labor Day to get here now!!

I do have to admit, with PJ in Canada on my schedule, I was a little less amped up for this show ... but it delivered, and then some!

Bumped into Glen on the way to the preparty ... such an unassuming guy ... looked like a bay area native if you didn't know who he was.

Sleepless Nights sans mics / amp was the standout highlight of the show for me. Absolute brilliance. Ed and Glen are fantastic together.

Surpising lack of covers (outside the ones Ed already does on his albums) ... but, that just meant more Ed sutff which was great.

Loved the Keith Richards story (Ed told a story about playing with the Stones in Oakland and getting called on stage to sing a tune with them). I think the few bars of "Waiting on a Friend" got the biggest cheer of the night. Wish he played more than 30 seconds of it (as we all did).

Kudos to the Oakland crowd ... barely any lugnuts screaming out. I remember being a bit miffed at the Berkeley crowds in '08 who would not shut the hell up ... this crowd was fantastic throughout.

I went from "yeah, it'll be good" to "AW, HELL YEAH" after the show and snapped up another ticket for tonight. See you all there tonight!

Epic show last night. Played some great songs. Accoustic Porch was just awesome. The totally vocal (no amp, mic or anything) version of Sleepless Nights was great. The audience was quiet as a mouse for it. Eddie Vedder's stories were classic, if not a bit odd (especially about the sheep  ). If he had added You've Got To Hide Your Love Away and maybe one more cover, it would have been perfect. But 99.99% of perfect is still pretty good. 8-)

That untitled organ song he played ... was that just random? Or was it based on any song in particular? I am trying to recreate the setlist with my collection and was wondering if something could fill that song in the setlist.

Phenominal show. I couldn't have asked for a better setlist, the blend of all things Eddie/PJ were there. I got to hear so much that I love. And it's more than just a show of songs. Eddie's stories about Keith Richards and the sheep one was hilarious. Entertaining night to say the least. Agreed that Sleepless Nights with no amps was unreal. Talk about feeling like you are right there in a small room with Ed and Glen. Arc never ceases to amaze me. The hair, well what hair there is, on my arms stands up everytime I've seen Arc live. And Glen, I'm now a fan. His opening act was so great, and that boy can play some guitar. And make you laugh too. Great crowd, great meeting new people from the area, great place to see a show at the Paramount. Gorgeous place to see Eddie. So jealous as I cannot make it tonight. I need to go back to work tomorrow to recoup the $300 I spent on merchandise!!!

Where do I begin? My Ten Club seats were 6 rows back center balcony. I've never sat in the balcony in the Paramount before, the sound was so crisp! GH was a great opener, glad he was the opener. Brought my wife along who was too pregnant and sick to join me at Eddie's last local show in Berkeley.

Eddie was in top form, no surprise. Just an all around good vibe in the theatre, great crowd, amazing sound. I left hungry for more, any 10 Club folks that have an extra for tonight I'm going to head down. PM me. Thanks Eddie!!

Well, being Dead Center but row Z in the balcony, I had my reservations. Eddie put those to rest rather quickly.

Like others have said a very nice show, although with the delay of it do to a BART protest, it put Eddie in a state of playing catch up I think. Maybe not though, since I don't know how long his first set have been going, he continually stated how he usually doesn't play this long. Got on the stage around 9:10 - 9:15 and took us on a journey for the next 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Have to agree with Jimed, the crowd was quite decent, and all of the yelling Eddie just brushed it aside or made light of it. His continual line was 'Oh I already have a plan, but thanks for the suggestion' or something along those lines.

The three extended stories were quite funny to hear, I really hope that Eddie holds up his promise and tells us the story about Hunter S Thompson tonight.

The set had a different feel to it, possibly because I had seen all of the string quartet performances in the past shows and there was none tonight, but it was absolutely phenomenal. Eddie sounded great and whether it was Uke, PJ, or ITW it was spot on. Really looking forward to tonight.

And Glen Hansard is absolutely amazing, I really liked his music before this, but after this show I have a new respect. It was amazing to see someone opening for Eddie that has been in the industry as long as he has and felt comfortable telling his own stories to the crowd. For instance Pennies in a Fountain he had to explain to us that it is not Panties, and then told a story about how he went skinny dipping at Beach Zuma. A wonderful opening act -- Sleepless Nights and Falling Slowly were my two highlights from the evening.

Fantastic. Betterman on the Uke was outstanding. GH and Eddie complement each other can't wait to see GH at PJ20. It was great to hear Eddie say Society was the best song on the album and even cooler that Jerry Hannan was in the audience. As funny as the stories were, Eddie's attempts at Wishlist are always the best, I have never heard him get them right and I think that is what makes the song so awesome live. This time "messenger" evaded him. haha. I was hoping to hear Off he goes but maybe tonight. Great show!!!!

It's kind of funny for a die hard fan when your show is towards the end of the tour. You log on every morning to check the setlists and read the reviews and it begins to paint a picture of what the vibe of the tour is going to be. You see some sets that look great, some that look ok, and then there are the really special ones. Then it's finally show day and the anticipation, at least for me, turns into a bit of nervous anxiousness. It's a bit of a mad rush to make sure you get there on time, pick up your 10C tickets, grab a poster, scope out the other merch, and make sure you get to your seats in time for the opener, especially when it is someone like Glen Hansard.

On the way down to our seats, the usher told us they were running late so I decided to make a run for a drink for my wife and I. I grabbed a glass of wine for me and a champagne for my wife and was just getting back to my seats as Glen was taking the stage. Ten Club hooked us up with great seats, row AA right on the end so we were about 15 rows back with a perfect view. Glen was as amazing as everyone has said. He told a story about skinny dipping at Zuma Beach and another about a big blue heron that has been on his porch both mornings since he's gotten to the Bay Area, makes me wonder where they are staying, maybe Uncle Neil's? All in all he was really incredible. Super personable and super talented. The crowd was very respectful during his set which eased some of my fears that the crowd would be like the Berkeley shows from a couple years back where people were constantly yelling out.

So now it is time for Eddie's set. He just looked happy coming on stage and he tore through a handful of uke songs. One thing I've noticed about PJ and now Eddie solo is they like to work most of their new stuff into the early part of the setlist. It is almost like they have to be played a bunch of times on one tour for them to develop into more rich songs that will come later in the setlist on later tours. The Into the Wild stuff is a perfect example of that. Last time around they were mainly played early in the sets pretty much note for note from the album but now the songs have much more richness to them. Rise, Society, Garunteed, etc... all took on a new depth last night. The PJ song highlight for me was Immortality, when I saw that he was playing it on this tour I was so stoked and he nailed it.

The duets with Glen were so epic. Even though you know they are coming you have no idea what to expect. Sleepness Nights was so cool. For me though I thought Falling Slowly was the real highlight. Glen took the lead but when Eddie took a verse or two it just worked so beautifully together. The crowd went nuts for Porch and then Hard Sun closed it out perfectly.

Oh, and there was the organ song. At one point Eddie just stands up and kind of looks around and says "F it, I'm going to try something different". He played the pump organ that was on the side of the stage, it was kind of slow and haunting (in the same vein as Mother Earth by Neil Young). It had lyrics but I couldn't quite make them out. All in all it was just interesting to see Eddie in front of a set of keys as I have never seen him come anywhere close to a piano or organ before.

All in all it was an amzing night. I think the crowd and the somewhat "standard" setlist primes Eddie and Glen for one of those unique shows tonight, can't wait to do it all again.

One thing that surprised me, NO WINE!!! Where was the wine. It looked like Eddie was drinking a fruit punch super drink.

It seems to me it was another amazing night!
As I´m sittin in europe - not being able to go to the US at the moment, neither to PJ20,
    :(
can somebody please write down the stories Ed has told last night, the sheep story with Keith Richards for example? Reading the fanviews is always a little bit like being there with all of you.
    Thanks!! ;)

His story about the Stones was really funny. He was talking about how they opened for the Stones here in Oakland in 97 and they did like 4 nights here. He said that on the last day they asked Eddie to sing with them. They rehearsed in the dressing room and he was all excited and nervous but was afraid that he was going to look stupid because Mick would be running all over the stage and he would just be standing there. So the time comes and he heads out on stage and has to stand right in front of Keith's amps which he said is a once in a lifetime experience. He said that "you know how they say great guitarists never play the same thing twice, well Keith never plays the same thing once". So it's about his queue to run up and join Mick and the stage is massive so he has to basically sprint across the stage to get to the mic. So the duet is great and all and then he heads to the after party at the hotel. He gets in there and it's out of this world, Hunter S. Thompson is there, "that's another story in itself, maybe I'll tell that one tomorrow night". So Keith comes up and puts his arm around Eddie and says you were great tonight, did you hear how nuts the crowd went for you? Eddie said yeah, it was incredible but it was kind of weird, Mick never even introduced me or barely even acknowledged I was there, and Keith says "No worries mate, he's been doing that to me for 30 years..." Pretty classic.

The sheep story took kind of a wierd turn towards the end but at its root it was a sweet story. He was talking about being up in the North Bay (north of San Francisco) recording an album which if memory serves me should be Vs. he said he went for a hike up to this big hill with his notebook and was just sitting there and could see a big pen of sheep down a ways. A truck came to feed them and move them to a different spot and they all start following the guy but one baby sheep gets left back and can't find its way out of the enclosure to join the group. He's watching and the herd just keeps getting further and further away. Finally one of the sheep stops and starts "yelling" back to the little sheep but he can't get out so the big sheep runs back to the herd so Eddie's like "well that sheep is F'd". Then all of a sudden the whole herd stops and that same big sheep went back and got the little guy, and the little one was so excited to not be left behind. That's when Eddie said so whenever you're dealing with sheep remember that they have feelings. "So if you're having sex with sheep at least make sure you commit to one, or if you're counting sheep to go to sleep at night make sure that they aren't sheep you've "been with" because that's just way too many...

    amazing show...
LONG NIGHTS!!! wow!!! perfect night and perfect moment in my life to hear that freaking song (still with goosebumps)...
sleepless nights with Glen (no mics, no amplification) was superb, the theater (what a building) and the people react to those amazing voices and that was a top moment for me...
immortality, better man, society, i am mine, guaranteed, oh well I can tell you the setlist again... thanks again Eddie for an amazing evening and thanks again for being so kind and take the time to say hello to your fans before getting into the Bus (next time don't make us wait that long 8-) )...

I fucking shake hands with Mr. Eddie Vedder, what a musician, an entertainer, a storyteller ("fahkah tha sheep" could be the name of last night funny/cute story ;) ) and a excellent human being... your appreciation to all of us is incredible, and that is worth more than front row tickets or all the vinyl and posters together... the way a person can touch another person soul is priceless, thanks again Eddie for an amazing night!!!

Keith Richards, Hunter S. Thompson and Eddie Vedder are in a hotel room after a Stones show ... we BETTER get details tonight!!!!

No Bob or Tom or James or Bruce or ... Cat. Sigh. But yep, I'll skip those for Immortality, alt Betterman, Eldery, Wishlist (even with flubbed first verse) and ... ARC, oh my, THAT was a monster of a rendition. Those first notes of Immortality just slayed me, sorry you purists, but i'm checking that OFF my list now! WHOO HOO!

Unplugged un-mic'd Sleepless Nights, amazing, and THANK YOU 10C for Row E!!!

And I got to chat with Jerry Hannan after the show, he was right behind me!

I thought the show was fantastic, and it got better and better as the night went on. Thanks 10C for great seats (Orch. Row H, center isle).

One issue I have is with the promoter's security. The goons were pacing up and down the isle the entire show, glaring at people in the audience, as if this was a ganstah rap show. I know that photography and recording is strictly forbidden, but I'm assuming that the intimidation factor wasn't specifically requested by EV. Right??

Fantastic show. The acoustics in this theater were just amazing. We were third row, center, front balcony. The sound was perfect. Highlights for me: Santa Cruz, Long Nights, Arc (unbelievably awesome), Betterman, Immortality, Sleepless Nights (goosebumps...you could hear a pin drop in the theater it was so quiet). Loved Porch, but I wish the audience was a bit more lively. I could have stood and rocked out, but the crowd was pretty mellow around us.

Eddie's stories were hilarious. I really hope he tells the story about the Stones and Hunter tonight. Oh, and meeting Eddie and shaking his hand was surreal...... :-D :-D :-D :-D

Can't wait for another incredible show tonight.

    Now for the show...

When was the last time you heard a good sheep story? ...ummm, last night. The show was incredible! Ed was so fantastically on. He was in the best mood, told so many great stories. The laundered shirt, the sheep one, the Stones one, being drunk in Hawaii and not wanting to go to bed because he “worked hard to feel that way.” (I hope he tells the Hunter S. Thompson story tonight. I love the idea of Ed at a party in Keith Richard’s hotel room and Hunter is there.) He was so relaxed and just seemed to really be enjoying himself- very Cali. 8-)

The show was phenomenal! Damn, can that man build a setlist. I loved Broken Heart and Betterman done in the lullaby style. Awesome to see I’m One and those few bars of Waiting on a Friend. What a tease! I got my Immortality! The thing about the Paramount Theater is that beyond being so incredible beautiful, the acoustics are ridiculous. I mean RIDICULOUS. I love seeing shows at this venue because there is not a bad seat in the house. And when you are in the balcony, which is where I was, the sound completely fills you up. So what is already such an incredible show is made even better by the sound. Deadman Walking was unbelievable and he was impeccable. Arc- in that room- I felt it in my core. The pump organ song he did was beautiful and his voice and the organ just went so well together. I actually heard him sound checking this in Santa Barbara and we were all like what the hell is that? He didn’t touch the organ in SB, and I am sooo glad he did it here. I will gladly take more of that anytime he wants to do it. And of course Sleepless Nights with Glen, no amps or mics, was jaw-dropping. Thank you to the crowd for not uttering a word or making a peep the entire time! We really got to experience something unbelievable. Those two together, I never want it to stop. EVer.

…Glen’s set was kick ass as well. I’m a huge fan of his and one of the biggest highlights of the show was when he slipped in some Smile at the end of Astral Weeks. Very cool. His performance was flawless and he was in a great mood and told great stories as well. Normally the sound of the word “panties” makes me cringe, but that Irishman can sing “Panties in the Fountain” any time he wants as far as I’m concerned.

Thank you Ed and thank you Glen for another night of amazing. Can’t wait for tonight!

Great show, highlights for me- Without You, Deadman, Wishlist (despite flub),Just Breathe,Unthought Known,Arc,Sleepless Nights (beautiful) & Porch! Thanks 10C for the seats. Paramount is a great venue, the crowd was good, except for a few commentators behind us (every song had a comment & they kept screaming for Black)and I did notice that security was a little overboard patrolling w/flashlights. This was the first time I shook Ed's hand after a show, how awesome is he? Totally made my night. Hoping for Off He Goes, Parting ways or a visit from Neil Young tonight!

Darn - that pump organ was on the stage in San Diego and he never touched it. Would have loved to have heard him play. Sounds like a great set. I shouldn't have stopped with the SB show I guess....

Will also mention that there were AMPLE professional photographers at the venue last night, in front of me there were 5-6 alone (on Stone's side, i know i know, but c'mon, that just makes it clear which side).

Got to chatting with one of them, and he was shooting a full two-page spread for a rock magazine -- totally forget the name of the rag now. I told him to shoot straight on and get those wings sproutin outta Eddie! Then I told him he was on the wrong side, cause the uke/guitar would show better shot from Mike's side....

Crowd in front was VERY VIPpy, not nesc gonzo for the tunes, but definitely there to be seen, folks showing clients to a good time and what not -- we were next to the backstage entrance and tons coming-going. Quartet next too me, girls went gaga for Glen -- which was a pleasant surprise, folks respecting the opening act. And my god, my first glimpse of Glen -- "LEAVE!!!!" I owe my wife a bit more jack johnson after the despondant depressing duo of Glen and Eddie. But I loved it, and Eddie's endearing side does take over at these shows.

And yes, security was simply "menacing" -- a constant foreboding presence to the point where I found myself hoping nobody around me would light up or whip out a camera. Sigh.

  • Have you ever seen a kid in a candy store, so exited going from one flavor to the next? Well, that is just what I saw EV doing at his show in Oakland this July 11, 2011. My husband and I have been following EV/PJ for 20+ years now and, we saw him in a very distinctively different light than ever before. It was a pure delight to see him open himself up as freely as he did. The set list was fantastic as was his special guest, GH. Their solos were ever so meant to be, kind of like bread and butter. This night stands out like none we have ever had before…and now my story begins.
My husband and I went to the EV solo show for our 15th Wedding Anniversary, Orchestra seating, center left, oh so slightly, but far enough away from EV to want to walk up the isle to front stage for just one close glance. After spending 20+ years listening to PJ and knowing how much our lives have evolved and matured, we sensed something quite unique and special about EV’s performance, and we for the first time were watching EV sober, not an ounce of liquor in us to haze our evening. Watching Ed perform solo, using his talents so genuinely and generously drew out emotions in me that I did not expect. I found myself from time to time with tears running down my cheeks. Sharing this with my husband and knowing how parallel our thoughts and emotions can be, I sensed a strong completeness in our lives that made it feel so full circle. EV played, sang, and told stories that only EV could tell. This night EV sank his teeth in hard and we did just the same. It was so clairvoyant, so raw that EV wanted to open-up every instrument in his being and be seen like never before. It seemed from time to time that the show was about to wrap-up, but in the dimness of the lights you could see yet another piece of candy being placed in EV’s hands and you knew it wasn’t over and he did not want it to end or he would have long ago. The crowd was so open to him, respectful and quiet. Then there was one particular time it seemed the show was at it’s end and a lot of people from the stage front started to stream out. There again in the dimness of the lights, you could see EV being passed yet another instrument. I looked up at my husband and knew this was our chance to see EV’s face and I said “this is it, enough people have left the front stage, there will be a spot for us, let’s go NOW!” In an instant, there we were standing directly in front of Ed, center stage front, the lights came on and EV went into full throttle tilt…XXX turbo boost. OMG, we could see his face, every wince and emotion that poured out of this man’s soul, right before our eyes. We were not only in awe, but we had smiles on our faces that you couldn’t wipe off with gasoline MF!! In an instant, as EV started to play Hard Sun, there was a stage rush, I got scared in that instant. I saw Ed back-up, then things settled. To be so close now and share what felt much more intimate, hard to explain, yet we felt so intertwined, though our worlds are so different. All I could think of was how much I have always commented on how beautiful Ed’s eyes are, they have a sparkle in them that I have never seen before, and yet most of the time he kept them closed. Then in one MOMENT he opened his eyes, focused and was staring my husband and I in the face and in my most silent “READ MY LIPS” yelled “THANK YOU!” And Ed got the HUGEST SMILE ON HIS FACE THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET! In THAT MOMENT, I knew we shared what we both sought from each other, TRUE GRATITUDE and JOY in DEPTHS that can only be shared from SOUL 2 SOUL. IN THAT MOMENT, I will NEVER FORGET my night with my husband of 15 years and our night we spent with EV. HAPPY 15 TH ANNIVERSARY MY LOVING HUSBAND!!
