Just wanted to thank the 10 Club, once again, for the opportunity to take my bestest sister in the whole world to go to a show...

Like others here, we've been going to see PJ and/or Ed Ved perform since '91...

For me --- well -- it's always been an opportunity for me to take a breath, reflect on what brings joy to my heart/life, and live in the moment. Last night's show, through various songs and/or comments (as always), gave me that time for honest reflection...From "Can't Keep" to acknowledging that I, too, may "play" both characters in "Off He Goes," to being reminded a la "Falling Slowly" that I should try to win the war against myself, to witnessing an *amazing* friendship between two musicians who love and appreciate friends, family, hope and faith, I was, once again, renewed and feel alive.

So, thank you so much again, all at the 10 Club for making me smile for the past 20 years, and, of course, Mr. Vedder and Mr. Hansard, for all you do.......

    much love and light,
    Em

Liked the show very much but seemed a bit sloppy. Ed was working very hard but his voice was a little shaky at first. Might be still recovering from a cold or something. Bailing out on Rise after two screw ups was disappointing but Sleepless Nights and Falling Slowly where a real treat! LBC was awesome but the solo guitar arrangement seems to be a work in progress.
As far as slamming the guy in the third row for texting "It better be important or get the fuck outta here" it was long overdue from any artist IMO.
Gotta believe it was an off night and LB,LA, and SB will be better

Eddie was great. I cant believe how harsh he was at the texting guy. Put him in his place. It was awesome.

The crowd did suck. Didnt even stand all night. Not even for porch or EWBTC.

It was so bad I was singing along and I got a look like keep it down. The guy actualy told me I was Eddie so dont sing along.

    WTF :o

I had a great time and thats all that mattered. It was so awesome.

I love the Uke songs live sooooo much. WOW.

    Thank You Eddie.

Tonights are my 10 club tix so wish me great seats :D

Talk to you all latter. I was able to get the Cards for every one I promised. I also got the 2 posters for every one :D

Funny, and true story. These were my seats last night:

    Row BB, seats 110-111

The tool who was sending text messages was literally right beside me, row BB seat 112, which was technically the 4th row, after the 3 in the pit. I am almost positive he didn't have a ticket to sit there. He was completely wasted, and on his phone non stop. After a few songs I went and told security that I was going to break his phone if he didn't put it away. As I am walking back to my seat, Ed goes off on him. The guy starts cheering...I wanted to say dude he is ripping you a new one in front of the entire audience.

Anyways you all saw the show and the opinions are varied...figured I would share my very up close and personal story of the "Copley Texter".

If that's all that mattered, why do you talk about the crowd sucking, which it really didn't... it's a quiet show, not a loud rock show; you don't need to belt out the tunes. Sounds like you were TOO loud and annoying people.

Seriously, I'd rather have people quietly talking to one another a lot than listen to you singing "Sleeping By Myself" (or whatever) at the top of your lungs (over a low key ukelele and voice).... at least I could hear Ed that way

Shows are, 99%, about how well, tight the artist is, just like you said. Just, leave it alone, elitist superfan. See my review - great applause all night - that's what a crowd should do: applaud.

The fact that the guy was wasted and cheering his own chastisement irritates me even more... my buddy and I were talking on the way back to L.A. about how that guy must be totally mortified to be called out by Ed like that, but obviously not... what an idiot. Maybe they should start checking SAT scores at the beer counter instead of IDs.

an SAT score has nothing to do with poor behavior, douchebaggery, public drunkenness, or a total lack of respect.

just one show without THAT guy, the 'thief of silence' - oh to dream. c'mon long beach...

Wow, this crowd was too quiet? Maybe everyone is saving their energy for Comic-Con, the best thing about San Diego this time of year. Does Pearl Jam have a panel this year? :D Perhaps they some of the boys will show up at the Fringe panel?

I really was expecting more from this show since it was in San Diego. The crowd behaved too well I think. There was absolutely no energy and Ed definitely noticed it. At some point he told the crowd they get into more if they wanted to. I still enjoyed the performance, but it could have been way better.

Re: the crowd- It was a Symphony Hall, so the vibe is a bit more restrained I guess. That didn't bother me at all. Also, SD is laid back compared to other cities for sure.

THE SHOW WAS AMAZING. Crazy good acoustics- Eddie's voice was perfect- better with age- His songs with Glen and with the quartet: spectacular.

I won't amend my previous knee-jerk reaction to this show but will qualify it, now that I've slept and convalesced.

Regarding the crowd: without making excuses, there are a lot of things that went in to how relatively quiet it was. Keep in mind that this is a very PJ and EV-educated audience, as Ed/the band come through on every West Coast tour. The previous back-to-back EV shows at Spreckels had much more energy, vibe and participation, but those of us in those audiences remember a gently scolding Ed (night 1) and a very hungover, funny but caustic Ed dressing-down yelling fans (night 2). This audience was reverential from Glen Hansard's first note, something I attribute to our collective knowledge and interest in the tour to this point. It was church-quiet for Glen's set in a near full house of rapt listeners, in order that we could best absorb that man's incredible voice.

The other big factor is the timing of this particular show, on a Tuesday after a long holiday weekend. We are a beach & bbq culture and the 4th is a big deal here. Not only were we beat-down from the holiday but the weather has been unusually muggy for this region; and at least speaking for myself, I am not used to that kind of sticky air. I felt drained and enervated all day leading up to the show and I'm sure others felt similarly. So we get Ed for only one show this time, the night one of a Long Beach back-to-back (with an actual cool poster instead of motherfucking Shamu).

    Other bitching and praise:

No Lukin, Immortality, Arc or any of the Cat Stevens trilogy. Sad face. I saw the first live Arc at the Sports Arena and we got it on night 2 of the last SD show, and the tape machine was queued-up on stage (and Arc on the setlist) but alas, no Arc. I hate missing that transporting spiritual moment.

Which leads to the primary lesson for myself, for enjoying art and life in general: don't have expectations, or at least, manage them reasonably. I've known and espoused this philosophy for a long time but badly failed to live it in the run-up to this show. That and having been nearly $500 into this tour for tickets alone the last few months. So yeah, between that and the memories of incredible SD shows past, I had high expectations.

Outside of all those biases it was still a great show. Glen left the lasting impression on me that he has on all of you, and Ed was his funny, brilliant self. But certainly the performance or the room or the combination thereof lacked energy and he left a lot of possible arrows in the quiver. But again, I will endeavor to not pine for specifics in future shows. (* I will continue to expect Hard Sun, which for me has all the appeal of Last Kiss or Dissident.)

Point of correction: Glen dedicated the lovely 'You Will Become' to Jill, the mother of Ed's children, not Ed's mom though she I believe was mentioned as well. From his story it sounded as if he had only recently gotten to know her and was very impressed with her growth as a person and spirit.

    Other venue and show notes:

Usual lack of any signage or direction for fans picking up 10c tix. Didn't win the ticket lottery but not too bad, row P on the aisle. I let longtime PJ fan-friends sit in those (for slightly below face and a round of drinks, natch) and kept my Row A grand tier seats from the ticketbastard 2nd chance sale. This was a great vantage point but I think everyone in the balcony were a bit forgotten by our hero on this night. (* though he did mention his own shitty top of the balcony seats in his pre-PJ life, so maybe I'm not remembering this correctly.)

The pit in front of the permanent orchestra seating was filled with a four-row temporary section smack in front of the stage, which from all appearances was the EV clan and friends.

Despite pulling staff from the hotel the Copley was still badly unprepared, at least from a bar service standpoint. The blue-haired ushers and floor staff were fine but the bartenders were clueless and their stations were horribly supplied. Like, no fucking water at all, upstairs at least. Thanks, guess I'll get hammered. Lines were very long though the downstairs bars were run better and moved fairly quickly. Upstairs was a clusterfuck. Medical chronic aroma was rampant in the unsupervised restrooms but not elsewhere.

Copley itself is a very nice venue visually, acoustically and comfort-wise (those of you going to the Wiltern, prepare to be absolutely jammed into your seat). Spreckels is much more cramped and the height of the balcony seating is ridiculous. Copley is ornate and roomy but lacks the intimacy of Spreckels or even the Civic Theater, I think.

That's all I got for now...now onto Benaroya and my own spiritual evolution.

  • wonder if that texter was the relayer for the set thread???!!!!

Ha ha, I was thinking the same thing, and laughed about it more later when I came to the boards to see that no one had heard from the designated relayer.

I already commented before but wanted to add/clarify a few things. First, I had the best seats I've ever had for an Ed show, or maybe any show ever...row BB, seat 10, which was 1 seat in from the aisle. Totally unobstructed view of Ed and Glen about 15-20 feet away, and even closer during Sleepless Nights. The stage is really low at Copley, which made it even better. We got these seats from the box office within a week of the show, which was a miracle. Apparently a certain percentage of seats are saved for the venue box office, and they had some singles left, moved some people around, etc. Awesome. So thankful for little Mario behind the ticket window.

Met some great fans in our row, including 2 girls who came all the way from Poland for the show. My buddy who came along with me had never seen Ed or PJ before, and he was absolutely floored. He says he can't stop thinking about it. Another convert...

Re the crowd, I went to the restroom during Encore Break 1, and came back to hear that he had already started in on Unthought Known. I was expecting to see the crowd on its feet when I walked back in, as they were in Philly last week, and, um, everywhere else in the fucking world, but no one was standing. It was just strange. I know all about the vibe in SD, as I lived there for 7 years and went to many concerts, but this was pretty extreme. I appreciated the silence during both Ed's and Glen's set, but at the same time I literally had to turn around a few times because I thought maybe the theater had emptied out or something. A nice touch was a woman seated behind me who actually thanked me for standing up during Porch, because she was doing the same thing. I thought she was gonna yell at me so it was nice to hear her say, "I'm so glad you stood up, too!"

"The End" was the best version I've ever heard, and "Falling Slowly" is just too beautiful for words, especially with the strings. Loved the earlier comment about how Ed and Glen have such an obvious mutual respect for one another. So true.

Ed told a story after "playing" Hey Fahkah about how he was thinking of doing a children's music CD with nothing but cuss words on it. "It'll be controversial."

  • Ok...I've read every post from the beginning up to where I'm posting now and I can't help myself but post my thoughts on last night's show. First...Thank you 10C for awesome tix! 9th row center, awesome! Second...the crowd and it's energy thing is rubbing me the wrong way here. Look, as a few have posted it's a performance and not a rock concert, I agree with those sentiments. The performance should be enjoyed and listened to, not just heard but listened to. To say that the crowd sucked, really? The crowd didn't suck, in fact I was impressed with the crowd and really appreciated how respectful we were. To have the audience be super silent, during one of the most treasured treat of my PJ/EV experience in which Ed and Glen walked up to the front of the stage and told the tech people we are going to do something different so the lights might be off, and then Ed unplugged his Uke and sang without a mic and oh....let me tell you, to listen to Ed's voice fill the room without a microphone sent me over the edge. We were witnessing and listening to a historical moment. The audience, IF THEY SUCKED, would have yelled, screamed, and even whistled during this magical moment. Nope, that didn't happen, well there might have been a few trying to cheer or scream but those in the audience were quick to shhh them and let me tell you, it was a silent as a church in there and Ed and Glen's voice filled the room. Like my buddy Ev, said to me, "Now I can die." Back to my point, the crowd did not suck. The crowd gave a lot of energy after the songs, like a great performance at a symphony.
Ed have matured and evolved, and like a fine wine it is best enjoyed slow tasting all of the little nuances that it offers, like the show last night, we did the same, we soaked it all in and listened to the music and for me, really got caught in the artistry of the songs and appreciate the slower place of listening. As a fan I cheered my ass off just as the tunes were ending and cheered like hell after the songs. I gave a few standing ovations and I stood up the entire time during the encores, so I don't know about one of the people here are talking about, but the entire lower section up front was standing during the encores.

Overall evaluation of the show for me, was right up there at the top. The crowd being less energetic during the songs? It happened, but once Ed expressed something of..."(paraphrase) hey you paid good money for the show and you can do what you want, but it's ok to cheer more during the songs" I think after that and after the first encore, that the audience did get more into the songs during the parts where it was ok to cheer. But, the crowd did NOT suck as I have stated above. We were respectful and appreciative of the God given talent that has been bestowed to Ed, and we listened, we listened to the words and the emotions behind every word. During the PJ concerts we sing and we sing loud, it's time to let loose and not really pay particular attention to every word. Ed's show last night, was a time to reflect, a time to share with friends and family.
One last comment, how many of you get a chance to listen to Ed sing without a microphone? If you are family or friends you might I imagine get to listen a bit, but for most of us- as fans, don't get that opportunity. I really felt as if Ed invited me into this room and sang just for me. Sounds funny, I know but it was truly special and it wouldn't have been so if it weren't for the awesome crowd! Not the SUCK crowd that has been portrayed in previous posts. So thank you, to those who shhhhh'ed the one or two fans who wanted to cheer or whistle during that magical unplugged Uke & microphone moment for me to enjoy. If we sucked, we would simply cheered and yelled and - missed that moment.
Like a fine wine, Ed was savored and enjoyed one moment, one chord, and word at a time. Thank you SD crowd.
Question...How many of you got to enjoy that type of a treat? LB? LA? SB? I don't think that is going to happen for a looooong while.
Once again, thank you 10c for the awesome tix, thank you SD fans for being a GREAT responsible crowd and for sharing in the finer moments from our wonderful artist, in our Ed. Thank you.
    Tony

  • Not to beat this thing to death, but i have a couple more points regarding the crowd. Of the first 19 songs, the only upbeat ones were You're True and Far Behind.......both of which are also very short. Energy goes both ways. Ed put together a very mellow setlist and that's exactly what he got out of the crowd.

The other thing that I don't think I've seen mentioned is that there were a lot of people there for Glen's set. I thought that was very cool and shows the kind of fans that Ed has. As cool as it was, I don't think anybody would say that Glen puts on a rockin' show. He's very talented, but its very mellow music and I know it definitely put me into a mellow frame of mind leading into Ed's set.

Personally, I enjoyed the show but would have liked for a few more upbeat songs in the first set. I wasn't at my best but I suppose I'm kind of saving myself for Santa Barbara on Saturday. What I'm glad we didn't get was the same type of crowd as Chris Cornell at Humphreys......douche bags and annoying drunk chicks talking through every song and jumping around like Burden In my Hand is the greatest rock and roll song of all time.

Wow, this crowd was too quiet? Maybe everyone is saving their energy for Comic-Con, the best thing about San Diego this time of year. Does Pearl Jam have a panel this year? :D Perhaps they some of the boys will show up at the Fringe panel?

I'd imagine Ed would be on the the side of "Comic-Con should be about the comics", and protest the TV/Movie panels.

My 10c seats were row B in the grand tier. Was surprised not to be on the floor, but happy to be close to the front of the balcony.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Porch and numerous songs had ALL the audience on there feet. Great crowd..Eddie looked like he appreciated the support..even he mentioned San Diego crowd was a little weak.

That's all a few of us are saying here. No one is arguing that people should have been singing/shouting/standing during something like Sleepless Nights.

Overall I thought the show was really good. Not great, but really good!
Met some cool people at Stout before the show...but like most PJ pre-parties/get-togethers, most people just wanted to be left alone with the friends they came with. Oh well!

My highlights were Without You, Off He Goes (f'n AWESOME!!), Just Breath, The End, Sleepless Nights (f'n awesome!!!) and Falling Slowly (f'n major awesome!!).

Sleepless Nights was just amazing. Glen and Ed are pretty much perfect together. Them unplugging and singing without mics or amps was unreal. Thanks to the crowd (which I'll get to in a second) for making that possible! Falling Slowly was just beautiful!

As far as the crowd goes, IMO, it a bit of a no-win situation.
All tour long, people were bitching about the drunken d-bags yelling and interrupting Ed...which we all know he hates. I fully expected this going in and was pleasantly surprised at how attentive, quiet and respectful they were. That said, there was so little energy in that building and I believe Ed was a little disappointed by the lack of...anything.
While most of us know Ed enough to realize he was calling that guy out very jokingly, I do think it sent a message to a lot of the crowd...more or less a "sit down, shut up, and stop f'n around kind of message to start the show. Then once he realized it, he was "oh, well, you can at least sing if you want..."
What's crazy to me were the people around me (3rd row dead-center balcony) were like stones the entire show. The guy next to me, who said he's been to 15 PJ shows, a couple of Ed shows, die-hard from the early 90's barely even clapped after songs. It seemed like even if Ed personally asked him to stand up and sing, he would have continued to sit. The whole section was like that!
All in all, I think the crowd was better than I expected. I'd take quiet and respectful over the assholes who yell and piss everyone off.

Overall the setlist was good, but it did seem to lack a bit. I was really hoping for Arc, but you can't win them all.

Bottom line - I had a good time. Really looking forward to PJ20!! :D

The LBC definitely had a lot more energy, but only a couple songs had everyone on their feet (mainly just the closers, Hard Sun & YL), and Porch and Lukin were not among them. A bit of a mixed bag comparing the two shows; SD was supper mellow but allowed for great moments like the truly unplugged Sleepless Nights, while LBC crowd was higher energy and set list a bit more upbeat. Compared to last tour I was extremely pleased with the overall level of respect from the crowd and lack of inane yelling.

Glad I hit both shows. Very different vibes and sets. Symphony Hall is an incredibly beautiful venue, almost hard to believe you're sitting underneath a parking garage. The staff generally deals with the, shall we say, much more mature set, so not surprised by the ungodly bar lines and admonishments for feet on the seats.

Met some really cool fans pre-showing at the Bistro; the brothers from Bakersfield telling stories about how their dad would take them to every show under the sun that came within a couple hundred miles of the Central Valley, and the nurse from Long Beach that hooked up a bartender friend of mine with her extra 10c seat in the front row of the balcony (cool to see her in the front of the balcony the next night as well, but I'll save that for the other thread). Also pretty funny talking to the two Symphony Hall stage hands that always drop by the Bistro for a drink after they set up and hearing them warning everyone "Don't get too excited, this isn't a Pearl Jam show, it's really mellow." Haha, I appreciate their concern, but I think most of us know exactly what we're getting into!
