Yep and dedicated to his kids(it's their favorite song).

Guy about ten seats from me got kicked out for lighting sparklers during 4th of July. Excellent show, crowd was totally respectful I thought.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

A very respectful crowd, Ed had no need to shout anyone down. I'm still a bit wasted from the show but am a bit underwhelmed, if I'm being honest. Seen too many shows maybe. Sorry Ed but this one disappointed.

** Glen Hansard is f-ng awesome.

Yeah, it was kind of a strange crowd. It was at the Symphony Hall here, and I kinda got the sense that there were a lot of folks there that sorta had the symphony "season tickets" and came to see who this Eddie Vedder chap was. Walkin' in and even just looking around, there seemed to be a lot of like 60-year-old matrons with facelifts and white pearls and fake fur on......those kind of people. Odd.

At one point, Eddie even said something to the tune of "it's OK if you wanna make some noise during the song." Kind of a damned if you do situation because it's usually in contrast to the nitwits that are screaming stuff.

    Pluses:

    - Bill Walton was sitting a few rows ahead of me!!

    - I thought Falling Slowly was really, really, good. I missed it in Boston, so was happy to hear it here.

    - Eddie told a good story about getting a ukulele at a garage sale when he was 12 (as his first stringed instrument), and then brought it out on stage after finding it as his ma's house this weekend.

    - Eddie and Glen did Sleepless Nights out in front of the stage with no microphones at all, just using their voices over a totally silent hall. Pretty neat.

    One Minus:

Eddie kinda got on this cat for texting about three songs in, but it wasn't the normal "jokingly making fun of the guy" sorta thing he does.....he seemed generally kinda ticked off. And it was the first things he really said to the audience, so it got the show off to a bit of a weird start.

I have seen many PJ and Ed solo shows and have never seen what happen tonight. Ed scared the CRAP out of 2200 people. When he told the guy to stop texting or Ed would be happy to go do something else for the night, I think he scared all of us. Ed knew he did too because 5 songs later he said it was ok to make some noise :)
It was a great show and Ed always has to let us know how lucky we are to live in SD
  • Glad to see I wasn't the only one that was underwhelmed. The opening set seemed to just drag. Maybe it was the combination of a Tuesday show in a symphony hall right after July 4th weekend that did it. That said there were some good moments like the deconstructed Betterman, Open All Night and Dead Man. Unthought Known early in the show would have helped the energy level.

Great Fucking Show! Acoustics were phenomenal! Sparkler show rocked! Unplugged "unplugged" set with Glen was dope!

Who cares what the crowd was like? Ed fucking rocked it, as usual.

Can't say I agree with those who are disappointed. Off He Goes was perfect and beautiful. The new version of Better Man is amazing and unexpected. The duets with Glen were all spectacular, and the show had some really great stories and some good humor from both Glen and Ed. I guess everyone feels they need to be a critic, but as a longtime show goer who took a buddy to his first show ever, I can say there were two of us that were more than satisfied.

Holy, crap, I feel like a tool. Not sure why I did that. Been listening to him since another love song. Ah well. It's late.
  • Off He Goes, Sleepless Nights and of course Falling Slowly were breathtaking. Crowd was very, very quiet, almost to a fault. There were like 10 of us on our feet for Porch... really, San Diego? Security was tight... no rushing the stage for Hard Sun, for the first time at any Ed show I've seen. Philly show last week had way better energy, but Ed and Glen sounded perfect tonight. As always, a source of pure happiness and appreciation.

Thank you 10 Club for the awesome seats (not sure there could have been a bad seat)...
Thank you Glen and Ed - for pouring everything you do into every note you sing and string you pluck :)
Thank you row mates on the floor of row T whom allowed me to rock out, sing along, etc - as well as seat mates directly in front and back - in rows S and U, respectfully - for allowing me to use my kick ass poster as a giant conductors baton / air bass/ air uke - :)
Attitude of gratitude - gotta have it :)
    Poster set is gorgeous...
Loved the references to San Diego mentioned throughout the night, and really cool during "Wishlist" ("...as fortunate as SD..")

Set list was awesome - "Love Boat Captain" really was excellent as was the version of "Betterman".

His voice certainly was another instrument tonight - tuned more beautifully than the mandolin that caused him severe challenges during "Rise" :) Ed's chops are quite impressive and the sound in the Symphony Hall was magnificent - "Sleepless Nights" - totally unplugged - was surreal and absolutely beautiful. Kudos to the crowd for not saying a peep and letting those artists have the moment...

"Falling Slowly" and "Open All Night" were fantastically phenomenal and I'd trade 3 toes for a recording of them :)

The energy around me was awesome, my wife loved the show, by buddy and his wife were blown away - and the group of folks all hikin around the parking garage were stunned how great that show was.

I loved the energy tonight - the humor, Glen was incredible (don't miss him)...
I cannot wait for Santa Barbara!

  • A great performance by Eddie, the quartet, and Glen!! NOT a great performance from the crowd.

After "Elderly Woman" I was scolded by a vederan fan for standing up during the song: "Dude. You're like 20. I'm 37. I've been growing up listening to Pearl Jam my whole life...I can have you kicked out.." blah blah blah.

Who cant help to stand up and shout during "I just wanna scream Hello" ? I'm 26 and have been going to PJ concerts since 96. This was my fifth Eddie solo show and I am aware of how you should act when a part of the audience. Then the same mature fan accused me of following him when I waited outside in the crowd for Eddie.

San Diego, you did not come through this time. Not being allowed to go up front for "Hard Sun" ? No pre-party fundraiser? No one making good noise or singing during the show (this is also sometimes known as energy)?

I'm super appreciative I was able to make this show, though. The quartet was such a great surprise which will make this show most memorable to me along with "Hey Fahkah," new "Betterman," "Fourth of July," and "Falling Slowly" with Ed doing just vocals.

Thank you Ed, 10C, Glen, EV crew, and most of the Copley Symphony Hall staff!

Last night was amazing! Yes crowd was a little weird.......some guy kept whistling at a very high pitch in the middle of songs kind of annoying, also behind me the people were holding down a conversation during some songs.....cmon! Was there with my wife, 2 couples next to us, very nice people. We were about 3 rows up from Sean Penn and family, was cool to see him in the crowd. Eddie's voice was on point, sounded very nice. Some of the highlights for me were LBC, Porch, EWBTC, Your True and pretty much the whole show. Glen puts on a great show too. Even the the crowd was a little off, the experience is as always.....AMAZING!

Ed was half-joking during the text thing. No one gasped, everyone laughed and applauded; EV didn't scare 2200 people. I think the Freud-by-numbers, over-analysis on this board is waaaay too weird.

Quiet crowd? No, we're laid back in SoCal - the applause after each song was loud, we're passionate. Bands love playing SD (over LA area, etc.). You don't need to stand and dance, even for a song like Porch, for that type of show. It's a mellow tour.

The majority of the ushers, mostly elderly folk, were Half-Nazi's. They ushered people well to their seats though.

I do think that the Spreckels show was better (and probably the entire 08 tour), in that, the mix-up of songs, production, et. al. was better.

LBC acoustic is kinda average. Every other song was killer; it was rad show, Siskels All Around (that's thumbs up, btw).

Show definitely had a weird vibe to it from the crowd, but Eddie was pretty spot on. And Sleepless Nights was amazing. The show meant a lot to me for a few reasons. Primarily, my dad has been having some major back issues lately and goes in for surgery in a few weeks. He hasn't been taking pain killers because he doesn't like how loopy they make him feel.

I've been going to concerts with him since I was 5 years old (I'm 25 now, and the Moody Blues was my first show ever), and he's been responsible for most of my music tastes. I introduced him to Pearl Jam back in 2003. He's seen them with me 4x now, and never been able to see one of the Eddie solo shows. It was difficult convincing him that he should just come down and go to the show because he was afraid that his back would start acting up and that it would ruin the whole night for both of us. After some reassurance from me, we finally drove downtown, and it was the most fun that I've seen him have in almost a year.

My dad's 62, and was probably one of the older people there. But he was singing and enjoying the show as much as everybody. In his words, "I don't care how badly I feel tomorrow --- it was just worth it to have a great night out." My other favorite quote from him was "Eddie Vedder is the only person who can make the word F*ck sound friendly."

Just goes to show that no matter how weird a crowd might seem or how lackluster a given performance might seem, the music is still having a major effect on some people in the crowd. Now off to Long Beach with my gf, and Santa Barbara on Saturday!

I thought last night was a truly awesome show - Ed's voice, his playing, stage presence, all were as good as ever, and that acoustic environment really brings out the craftsmanship of the songs themselves -

and I'm really not big on exaggeration, but damn, that version of "falling slowly" may have been the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Seriously.

I also don't tend to rate a show's greatness based on the crowd's level of noise or action - I always figure different cities have different personalities, and people will just kind of do their thing...

Looking at the facts - an amazing and beloved singer and songwriter, who happened to be in great voice last night, poured his heart out for about 30 songs (THIRTY!!!) with absolutely first-class sound, lighting, and venue - with brilliant accompaniment from the string quartet and Glen - sounds like a pretty incredible show to me.

Well said. Ed seemed really focused on the songs last night. Falling Slowly was incredible, and Off He Goes and Just Breathe were personal highlights. For whatever reason, San Diego was one of the few cities where they didn't play Just Breathe on the '09 tour, so it was nice to finally hear it live.

Finally, if Ed ever asks you to go to a show with him in San Diego, don't. He doesn't have good luck with tickets. I think he's sat in the last row of every venue in town.
