How should liberals celebrate the 4th of July

Typical Americans...making a National Holiday out of a Will Smith film. :roll:0

I want to partially take back what I posted before... mainly the part about if Americans were honest they'd admit that it's really just a summer festival they're celebrating, and not a celebration of freedom. I don't doubt that Americans love the freedoms they have here, nor do they want to take them for granted. Although I do think many American fetishize freedom and don't really understand what it is. It seems that a commonly held modern view of the 4th of July is that The US of A holds the copyright on Freedom, and conservatives especially think they own that copyright. Of course, there is no copyright, because as progressives know, "freedom" is an evolving concept.
Excepting 100% of everyone who just came back from war and still has their wits, I'm not sure what % of Americans really true care about freedom.... I guess you could say it's the same percentage that actually vote.
At the end of the day, Independence Day is a holiday... a day we are free... free from working for our corporate owners. Unless of course your place of business was open today, because there's a fairly good chance it was. I drove by a Wal-Mart today which certainly was.
Yeahhhh ...... Freedom is subjective concept. Do Americans really know what it means? Does anybody? One thing for sure is that it's a day to party with family, friends, neighbors and all Americans, for a common reason, whatever we imagine that reason is, be it "freedom", the birth of the world's first lasting democratic republic, whatever... or because it's a big kick-off to summer - maybe that's really all it is then when you peel away all the layers. Maybe I do agree with my earlier post, and I just needed to explain it better. I don't know if I feel any better about it though. :?0 -
happy fourth

The local 24 hour news station celebrated by asking strangers if they know what the history of July 4th meant, and who the US won freedom from. Turns out that half the people interviewed couldn't answer either question correctly, and yes, it was all on camera. How humiliating. The station went on to say that for the 30 and under crowd, a high percentage couldn't answer the questions at all.0

Is there any event/day/minute that you people don't complain about? Do any of you have any fun?
Why let politics ruin time spent with family/friends.
I used to think that PJ fans would be cool people to hang out with, but you people sound miserable...
Why do you spend time listening to an American band, on an American website, if you hate america so much?0 -

I am assuming you live in a house, right? I could interview you and ask you a thousands of questions about the materials of your house, all the MEP's, structural integrity, etc and you probably wouldn't be able to answer 1/4 of them. Does that make you pathetic?0 -

Ah yes.... the "you don't agree with every one of my personal stances so you're miserable and hate America" defense.
For the record... it was a conservative who started this thread. Why don't you chastise him?0 -

Um... totally irrelevant, and the questions were about very BASIC U.S. history. You're really going to excuse adults for not knowing, huh. Yeah.0 -

Personally, I just don't partake in any of the flag waving nationalism some consider patriotic.
I enjoy the holiday just as much as you people who get all puffed up over being born lucky....but apparently not as much as gimme0 -
no one want's to consciously take anything for granted.
I've never been out of the country (only to carribean) and often wonder of life living somewhere in asia, europe or great britian.
I see the shows on the documentary chanels and see people literally risking their lives to come here. One show, showed a body of woman laying on the ground, lost from her group and to her end. can you imagine what was going through her mind in those final moments. It's hard to get over sometimes.
maybe we don't always see it, and a commitment to anything takes growth, and it's not always perfect, but all those people on those shows can't be wrong.
I'll take it. I'll stay here, try to make my path, change, whatever I can do, but I'm thankful I was born here.

I did a lot of flag waving this weekend, but mainly from pulling the flag out of the pin at my local golf course.
I hope everyone had a great weekend. Personaly, I did not consume a single thing that was healthy for me over a four day period ... actually kind of glad to get back to work! :oops:Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0 -
