The local 24 hour news station celebrated by asking strangers if they know what the history of July 4th meant, and who the US won freedom from. Turns out that half the people interviewed couldn't answer either question correctly, and yes, it was all on camera. How humiliating. The station went on to say that for the 30 and under crowd, a high percentage couldn't answer the questions at all.
Not being able to answer those particular questions is pathetic, but maybe these people were not fortunate enough to get an adequate education?...
I am assuming you live in a house, right? I could interview you and ask you a thousands of questions about the materials of your house, all the MEP's, structural integrity, etc and you probably wouldn't be able to answer 1/4 of them. Does that make you pathetic?
there is a difference. you get taught about the fourth or july and the american revolution and get tested on it in elementary school history. you have to research and teach yourself about "all the MEP's, structural integrity, etc" unless you are in building design or construction, where it is taught to you...
Just because your taught and tested /= retained... Expecially at (some)public schools where they pass kids who can't even read so they don't loose funding...
Is there any event/day/minute that you people don't complain about? Do any of you have any fun?
Why let politics ruin time spent with family/friends.
I used to think that PJ fans would be cool people to hang out with, but you people sound miserable...
Why do you spend time listening to an American band, on an American website, if you hate america so much?
Please explain how any of us are letting politics ruin time spent with families or friends?
Personally, I just don't partake in any of the flag waving nationalism some consider patriotic.
I enjoy the holiday just as much as you people who get all puffed up over being born lucky....but apparently not as much as gimme
no one want's to consciously take anything for granted.
I've never been out of the country (only to carribean) and often wonder of life living somewhere in asia, europe or great britian.
I see the shows on the documentary chanels and see people literally risking their lives to come here. One show, showed a body of woman laying on the ground, lost from her group and to her end. can you imagine what was going through her mind in those final moments. It's hard to get over sometimes.
maybe we don't always see it, and a commitment to anything takes growth, and it's not always perfect, but all those people on those shows can't be wrong.
I'll take it. I'll stay here, try to make my path, change, whatever I can do, but I'm thankful I was born here.

I did a lot of flag waving this weekend, but mainly from pulling the flag out of the pin at my local golf course.
I hope everyone had a great weekend. Personaly, I did not consume a single thing that was healthy for me over a four day period ... actually kind of glad to get back to work!

I think the people who risk their lives to get to the US are exclusively poor.
I think those same people would likely live a pretty comfortable life in their home country if they were well-off, regardless of what country we're discussing. Also, you can almost be sure that our countries have at LEAST somewhat contributed to the conditions that leave them desparate in the first place.
Regardless of your opinion on that topic, the underlined words above make all the difference in the world to me. Being THANKFUL and feeling LUCKY to be born in a "first-world" country is totally understandable. Being PROUD to be born here, is not. Taking pride in something you had nothing to do with always seems foolish to me.

Geez, you're even wrong when you're kidding around
My post count would be more indicative of wasting work time than time with family/friends...esp considering I have a friend or two here and this is how I spend time 'with' them....and my 'most active forum' is the AET.

Hardly justifying anything, just pointing out Parachute's error. Comprende? I even said so. I'll be sure to congratulate you on your upcoming 1000th post Heidi. I guess you're 2/3 better than me.
Justify this: letting others answer direct questions for you, then popping out from behind their skirt to make a lil troll remark.
