Ahhhh, yes... Political Party affiliation partisanship... nothing says 'America', better than 'Political Party affiliation partisanship'.

In other words, forget about ever celebrating some sort of "declaration of interdependence"?

In the minds of some... apparently, 'Yes'. It doesn't seem to matter that they are American... what seems to matter more is what political party they adhere to. That is where that interdependence exists... my hatred for the 'other party' defines my being.
    ...
For me... Independence Day belongs to all Americans, not just the ones who share my opinions.

There's nothing wrong with a little fire worship, if you know how to do it.

    http://janaaronyoung.com/html/fire_worship_july_4.html

^though this fool don't seem to like it much. Haha, the author of this webpage is clearly a nut, although it's an interesting collection of thoughts and information.

And there's some truth in what's being argued there.

I think if Americans were honest, they'd have to admit that 4th of July is a really a celebration of the beginning of summer. If our independence had been declared in February, would it be such a big deal?

No, it's a big deal because it's a summer festival, just like Christmas is a big deal because it's a winter festival... which is great... which is totally natural. And that's what we will never let go of our pre-Christian traditions. I just wish we could regain the sense that with these celebrations we are in fact showing reverence for the rhythms of nature, and if that were the case, maybe we'd once again show reverence and respect for nature itself.

Liberal enough response for ya? ;)

Yeah... you anti-American, unpatriotic liberals should start your own country... why don't you move to Texas or Arizona with all of those other anti-4th/anti-fireworks liberal pansies?

  • I mean... at least that list acknowledges that America was pretty much built on the backs of slave labour and that it's only liberals who think that's a bad thing.

And vegan latteés should be made with coconut creamer. It's much thicker than soy milk and tastes better with coffee.

Oh, but in the spirit of the OP, this is how Conservatives are probably going to spend their July 4th.

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.

So beersbee picnics and not having military parades excuses the fact that the US is the most aggressive, militarized nation in the world?
    And getting fat = patriotism?
What a perfectly fitting quote for today, thanks aerial :)

    Great article. Thanks OP.

And the Number 1 way that Democrats could re-appropriate the Fourth of July is
    1. Actually love their country and talk about it without always saying “I love America, but [issue probably having to do with their relationship with their fathers].”

Ha. So true on the moving train...

I wasn't aware not wanting the US to bomb the shit out of a sovereign nation, who posed no threat to the USA (Iraq) had something to do with my relationship with my dad.

    Stupid fucking article.

So... living under the constant fear that my husband of 19 years could be deported if his work Visa isn't renewed one year... having to pay the same taxes as straight people but not getting the same rights, protections, responsibilities and privileges... That's my dad's fault?

    I see.

Do you find it hard to walk with your head shoved all the way in there? Just asking.

    i had a great fourth.

i woke up and bought a new microwave because mine blew up last night. it is great that i can go to a huge corporate store called Target on independance day, a day where 95% of the population used to not have to work, and buy a microwave made in china from a corporation paying the elderly woman who rang me out who has worked there 24 years minimum wage and limits her hours to 12 hours a week because they have to prove that they are hiring people so their numbers go up each quarter and there are not enough hours to go around....god bless america.

then i went to a pool party in a very affluent area on this absolutely beautiful day and drank many beers and had great food and steaks with the beautiful women at the party. there were many professors from the big universities in town there, many intellectuals and artists and local celebrities there, and my band played a few sets and made triple our current going rate for half of the work. we essentially got paid to make a bunch of noise, drink beer, and hit on the women at the party. everything was very relaxed and chill, and nobody got upset if a nipple accidently slipped out. then i got to watch fireworks in the pool while making out with a beautiful woman who i had just met an hour before. you gotta love being in your mid 30s, single without any other concerns, and getting paid to attend parties that resemble hedonism II. god bless liberals and god bless america.

I want to partially take back what I posted before... mainly the part about if Americans were honest they'd admit that it's really just a summer festival they're celebrating, and not a celebration of freedom. I don't doubt that Americans love the freedoms they have here, nor do they want to take them for granted. Although I do think many American fetishize freedom and don't really understand what it is. It seems that a commonly held modern view of the 4th of July is that The US of A holds the copyright on Freedom, and conservatives especially think they own that copyright. Of course, there is no copyright, because as progressives know, "freedom" is an evolving concept. 8-)

Excepting 100% of everyone who just came back from war and still has their wits, I'm not sure what % of Americans really true care about freedom.... I guess you could say it's the same percentage that actually vote.

At the end of the day, Independence Day is a holiday... a day we are free... free from working for our corporate owners. Unless of course your place of business was open today, because there's a fairly good chance it was. I drove by a Wal-Mart today which certainly was.

Yeahhhh ...... Freedom is subjective concept. Do Americans really know what it means? Does anybody? One thing for sure is that it's a day to party with family, friends, neighbors and all Americans, for a common reason, whatever we imagine that reason is, be it "freedom", the birth of the world's first lasting democratic republic, whatever... or because it's a big kick-off to summer - maybe that's really all it is then when you peel away all the layers. Maybe I do agree with my earlier post, and I just needed to explain it better. I don't know if I feel any better about it though. :?

The local 24 hour news station celebrated by asking strangers if they know what the history of July 4th meant, and who the US won freedom from. Turns out that half the people interviewed couldn't answer either question correctly, and yes, it was all on camera. How humiliating. The station went on to say that for the 30 and under crowd, a high percentage couldn't answer the questions at all.

Is there any event/day/minute that you people don't complain about? Do any of you have any fun?
Why let politics ruin time spent with family/friends.
I used to think that PJ fans would be cool people to hang out with, but you people sound miserable...
Why do you spend time listening to an American band, on an American website, if you hate america so much?

Not being able to answer those particular questions is pathetic, but maybe these people were not fortunate enough to get an adequate education?...
I am assuming you live in a house, right? I could interview you and ask you a thousands of questions about the materials of your house, all the MEP's, structural integrity, etc and you probably wouldn't be able to answer 1/4 of them. Does that make you pathetic?

Ah yes.... the "you don't agree with every one of my personal stances so you're miserable and hate America" defense.

For the record... it was a conservative who started this thread. Why don't you chastise him?

Um... totally irrelevant, and the questions were about very BASIC U.S. history. You're really going to excuse adults for not knowing, huh. Yeah.

there is a difference. you get taught about the fourth or july and the american revolution and get tested on it in elementary school history. you have to research and teach yourself about "all the MEP's, structural integrity, etc" unless you are in building design or construction, where it is taught to you...
