Surprised this got so much feedback. Thanks for the answers.

PS: South Jersey has waves. Philly is very, very close. Nevertheless, the waves coulda been better this week.

I've realized that it's easy to get sucked into this stuff, and I don't want to do that. There's nothing gained from it in my opinion.... but, maybe I'm wrong. So, this will be my last thread here for some time. I depart with hopes of never returning to this section of PJ.com, but who knows. Before I go... I leave you with several questions:

    1) Why do you post here?

    2) What do you do while you are posting here? Do you have a job?

    3) Do you really think you're changing anyone's minds?

    4) If you don't really think you're opinion is changing anyone's minds, repeat question 1? If you think you are changing people's minds, how does that make you feel? Why does it make you feel that way?

In all seriousness, it's been fun. I'll respond if I can, but I'm otherwise outta here, grabbing my board at 4PM and headed to the beach. So, enjoy.

I agree, no matter how against my opinions 95% of AMT posters are, my opinions will not change on certain issues.
I find that people get angry and hostile when they don't agree and try get that person to change their views by aggressive means and at times they get personal.
I have nothing but gotten myself into trouble on AMT (warnings) and promised myself I would not venture here again but the threads are just hard to resist.

How much of the problem with AMT is that this section of the forum is supposed to be a place to discuss current issues as opposed to ranting or arguing harshly against other's perspectives? To my sensibilities there's could be less anger here and more intelligent discussion. Each of us would like everyone else to see things the way we do but obviously that won't ever happen. For most of us, a clear headed statement of beliefs backed with good research and solid evidence will turn more heads than badgering, belittling, verbally jabbing, etc. You have to be really, really good at the latter-- and FUNNY-- to get anywhere with that approach. If you're not an Edward Abbey or a George Carlin, you're better off with the more straightforward sober approach to stating an opinion. Oh, and, as Kurt Vonnegut suggested, be courteous.

P.S. I always fall flat on my face when trying to be an Abbey or a Carlin so I take the sober approach.

The above statement is a lie.

The above statement is not always true.

Phew! No kidding. Feeling a bit frustrated with the whole thing (and miffed at myself for a rare-- --stupid statement)I recently tried abandoning AMT. My sabbatical from this forum only lasted about 3 or 4 days! :D

is it even legal to conduct social experiments on groups of people without them knowing?

i would consult an attorney. they could tell you for sure.

i know that every piece of research i have been invloved with the subject had to be made aware and sign an informed consent.

Do you guys remember the OnlySongGuy that also said he did an 'Experiment' on the M.Train... and we all failed miserably because we wouldn't talk about some fucking shit he wanted us to talk about... I forget.
Well... I only thought of that because I should have bet him went he said that I wouldn't be able to walk to the 7-11 to buy a pack of smokes with U.S. currency because there would not be any 7-11 and the only currency would be gold. That was back in 2005.
I tried to bet 100 bucks (or 200 bucks, I forget)... but he said nothing lower than 200,000 dollars or something ridiculous.
    ...
Anyway... this reminded me of him.
    Carry on.

it is not the first time we have been "researched" or been the "subjects" of sociological experiments. depending on the type of research, doesn't there need to be some sort of informed consent? either way it doesn't matter. it was fun talking with you. enjoy the waves.

Not that I know of. Sociologists do this all the time.

*Edit* He does need consent if he collected data, otherwise no. He's not going to tell you if he did.

    inlet13 glad you are around

    1) I am here in all parts of the forum because I love Pearl Jam and feel closer to them being here.
I have received love here and I am learning everyday, more about PJ, more about the world
and people and more about myself.

    2) I am working, doing the office duties for our printing company.

    3) no I don't but I hope there are a few like minds and those that are not
I hope they can still like ...

    which kind of handles # 4 I guess ...

I have to say I really don't think anyone changes their core beliefs
but learning to appreciate and respect the otherside of the argument brings precious
    insight and grows the heart.
  • I swore off moving train sometime last week ...maybe the week before (yet here I am LOL)...

My reasons are more self centered and off topic ;) .

AV PJ20 showed me how positive we can be, how one thing in common can trumph all the diff of opinion. These boards show what an amazing little fan community we have... we can be so supportive, try and help each other when we can and there is always a kind word when needed. Bring religion and politics into the mix and people can get really ugly really fast (myself included). So off I go from MT.

Peace all have a great weekend.
