I agree, watched my mom and grandmother die from smoking cigarettes. Really ugly deaths.
You're both right. And I bet the 2nd guy's mom and grandmother didn't make their living as a vocalist. Ed's voice is deteriorating thanks to cigarettes. I hope it's worth it to him.John and Shawna0 -
he usually smokes between sets...and power smokes at that"No way to save someone who won't take the rope, and just lets go..."0

I'm being selfish too - I want him around for that long too - means I'll be 108  .
Seriously, I smoked for 23 years and now have trouble breathing on humid or cold days. The only regret I have in life was smoking. But it does give you a deep rich voice, but I only sing FLAT  .0 -
In my opinion, Eddie's voice has held up really great over the 20 years he's been singing, as well as smoking.
Like someone said, age does bring adjusments and obviously his voice was going to change - I don't think it has deteriorated in any way.
It's still as amazing as it was. it's different and yeah there are certain songs that he can't sing the same way as before - but his control, variation, tone - it's all aged and changed and evolved really beautifully and gracefully. Heck, after 100s and 100s of shows, the fact that his voice is this good now is truly great.
As to smoking, it's his lifestyle choice and while I don't condone it, I do understand why people want to smoke and it's completely up to them.0 -

hes a grown man, he can do what he wants
Just out of curiosity, would you rather have a grown man blow smoke in your face every day for twenty years or a would you rather have a grown man hold shit up to your face for you to take a whiff of every day for twenty years? One of these you can die from the other you cannot, can you guess which one?! It's funny how some things are tolerated in society and others are not.
HOLD IT. I just wanted to make A point...I am in no way trying to stir up a debate about smoking in society. Again, just a point.0 -
smoking kills the smoker and those who inhale the smoke of smokers. I hate it. That said, it's legal in the US and Ed's a grown up so he can carry on as he pleases.....It's nice to be nice to the nice.0

we aren't talking about him blowing smoke into someones face, we are talking about him smoking himself, and thats fine by me aslong as he wants to keep smoking0 -
It must be on Eds mind to quit. In a few versions of "Down" He changed the lyrics "Think I'll throw these pills away" to " Think I'll throw these cigarettes away". I wish he didnt smoke. But he is his own manSome words when spoken...Can't be taken back...0

1) he shouldn't smoke in the theaters there are nonsmokers around him who have to inhale that shit
2) his instrument is his voice and he is abusing it daily by smoking
3) most importantly he's shortening his life and is being very selfish when it comes to those that love him. I'm sure his family would want him around to watch the kids grow up and his wife to grow old with.
But hey he wants to give it up for cigarettes that's his choice...a bad one, but his none he less.0 -

OMG! Texting Doubles Smokers' Confirmed Quit Rates at 6 Months
Texting motivational messages to people trying to quit smoking doubles their biochemically confirmed quit rates, compared with a control intervention of messages unrelated to smoking, according to a Lancet study.
Some 5800 patients seeking to quit smoking were randomized to receive either motivational text messages (the txt2stop group) or messages simply thanking them for participating in the trial (the controls). Motivational messages reminded participants of the benefits of quitting, and participants could text "crave" to the system to receive support in overcoming temptations to smoke.
At 6 months, the txt2stop group had a 10.7% rate of biochemically confirmed abstinence, versus 4.9% in controls.

that sounds like it would want to make me smoke more0 -
He's smoked between sets at all 4 shows I've seen. And at Berk II he actually brought it up, something like, "I can smoke as part of the performance, and now that Sean's up here on stage, so can he... but none of you can." And Sean proceeded to light up, pour himself a glass of wine and listen to Ed roast him with Bad Acting Hack.[sic] happens0

who cares if he wants to smoke a cigarette?? seriously?? I don't.
I have a picture of the band in my bedroom that I printed off the internet years ago, where they are walking down a hallway before a show, in Germany, I think...and Ed is in basically the front, with the band and a few handlers beside them, and Ed is smoking a cigarette.. when I first started dating my boyfriend, he saw this pic in my room and he said 'I didn't know Eddie Vedder smoked'. I said 'well, I guess he does if he feels like it'. Really.. I realize this thread is about him smoking during a show, but, really, who cares if he wants to smoke a cigarette?????????? Damn.0
