I think he did in California at some of the shows at outdoor venues. He mentioned lighting up on one of the recordings I heard.

Nonetheless, he needs to quit. Those vocal cords can only take sooo much. Eddie, I am a doctor. Let me help you! Chantix? Nictotine replacment? Supports groups?! I want you singing until you are a 100!

spitting comes from smoking and signing, the combination

I remember when I smoked alot and using my lungs alot made me want to spit alot, very nasty, not that I sang, just running around did it, so I imagine it's similar

He seems like he doesn't smoke that often when he does shows. So when he has the time to, he lights it up probably to relieve some adrenaline :D:D

You're both right. And I bet the 2nd guy's mom and grandmother didn't make their living as a vocalist. Ed's voice is deteriorating thanks to cigarettes. I hope it's worth it to him.

It's a good thing that this thread is just opinions  . Ed I believe has been smoking for years. Plus no offense to Ed but with age comes adjustments. I mean really can anybody you know sing twinkle twinkle little star with a voice of a five year old.:lol::lol::lol:

I'm being selfish too - I want him around for that long too - means I'll be 108  .

Seriously, I smoked for 23 years and now have trouble breathing on humid or cold days. The only regret I have in life was smoking. But it does give you a deep rich voice, but I only sing FLAT  .
  • In my opinion, Eddie's voice has held up really great over the 20 years he's been singing, as well as smoking.
Like someone said, age does bring adjusments and obviously his voice was going to change - I don't think it has deteriorated in any way.
It's still as amazing as it was. it's different and yeah there are certain songs that he can't sing the same way as before - but his control, variation, tone - it's all aged and changed and evolved really beautifully and gracefully. Heck, after 100s and 100s of shows, the fact that his voice is this good now is truly great.

As to smoking, it's his lifestyle choice and while I don't condone it, I do understand why people want to smoke and it's completely up to them.

Just out of curiosity, would you rather have a grown man blow smoke in your face every day for twenty years or a would you rather have a grown man hold shit up to your face for you to take a whiff of every day for twenty years? One of these you can die from the other you cannot, can you guess which one?! It's funny how some things are tolerated in society and others are not.

HOLD IT. I just wanted to make A point...I am in no way trying to stir up a debate about smoking in society. Again, just a point.

smoking kills the smoker and those who inhale the smoke of smokers. I hate it. That said, it's legal in the US and Ed's a grown up so he can carry on as he pleases.....
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

Well any other solo show I've been to, he smoked right up on stage. Must've been going to the side unless he did quit for his daughters :-)
