Opinions: PJ20 vs. 2 Toronto shows

My friends and I are debating which way to go. Half of our foursome live in Pittsburgh, and two of us live in Columbus, Oh. columbus is 6hrs from chicago, and Pitts is 5-6 from Toronto. So geography/distance aren't a big factor either way. We don't have tickets, but will just either pick up lawn seats for the festival, or try to buy some at or close to face value for Toronto. Total expense is a factor, of course. If we go to Alpine, we'll camp, so that will be much cheaper than a Toronto hotel, I'm sure. But the concert tix will likely be less in Toronto.

So we're kind of torn on what to do, and none of us have been to Toronto, so we don't know a lot about traveling there. Any insight from the forum is appreciated.

We have all been to Chicago for PJ shows several times, and my first ever PJ show was at Alpine back in '98. So there is that slight nostalgic side of me that would like to go back there. None of my travel mates have ever been to Alpine.

Thoughts?

I would say go to Alpine. Fans will be traveling from all over the world for those shows and you will see a few other great bands too. I am sure the Toronto setlists will be good too, but these setlists may be legendary.

Alpine. There are already plenty of lawn tix on here for less than face.

  • If some of you need passports that may factor into your cost too. I vote for you to go to Alpine! :D
  • Alpine. Seriously, Alpine.
Also, the Toronto shows are happening during the Toronto Film Festival so hotels are going to be hard to come by and expensive. Add that in to your total cost along with passports and Toronto is probably more expensive than Alpine.
I know I was born and I know that I'll die, the inbetween is mine. I am mine.

definitely alpine because you are guaranteed tickets ... and it'll be an all day thing and you should get in cheaper than toronto ...

i live in toronto and i think it's a great city with lots of cool things to do but if your primary focus is PJ - then Alpine all the way ... i'm going to 3 cdn tour shows and still have Alpine in the back of my mind if I end up at the Apostle Islands the week before ...

I'm flying from Texas to Toronto for the shows, but at this point you're going to be better off with Alpine.

Tickets in Toronto are not going to be cheaper. At this point, it will be tough to find 4 tickets in the ACC together, or even pairs in decent seats... and the scalpers in Toronto are very well organized to reem you for every last penny. You will find much cheaper lawn tickets for Alpine from people trying to unload them here on the forum.

And if you can camp, you accomodations will be much cheaper. The PJ shows in Toronto are during Toronto International Flim Festival (TIFF), so hotels are at a premium that entire week. Unless you're willing to stay in the 'burbs and hop public transit into DT, you will get reemed for a hotel as well.

The reason I'm headed to Toronto is because I'm Canadian and have a lot of really good friends to party with their that are providing me with accomodations. And I organized everything I needed early (because I know Toronto very well)... before prices went through the ceiling for that weekend...
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.

I would choose PJ20 because it's PJ20.I want to be able to say I was there. In a way, it's like my Woodstock, the 20th birthday of a band that has seen me through so many ups and downs and growing up over the years.

If that's not all that important to you, go to Toronto. Those shows will be good, too. To me, however, they're just shows.

I was all PJ20 until I got shut out on tickets, then I bought Toronto tickets. Then I came to the conclusion that I couldn't miss PJ20. So now I'm doing both! :D

    Alpine, no doubt.

I'm also doing all 4. I'm backpacking/hitchhiking with Dimitris from Wisconsin to Toronto.

    Wish us luck!

I choose Toronto over Alpine in no time. You can go to 5 canadian shows for the price of the weekend in alpine. Plus it's a festival with a horrible opening acts that will be the same both days??? Are you kidding me? Where is Soundgarden, Neil Young, Ben Harper? Not to mention the bad sound and a very large crowd at at festival so you might not be able to see anything except the big screens :D

I was in Berlin twice. Wuhlheide is a great outdoor place for a concert. You cannot compare it to a festival....
