Bruce Springsteen- Nebraska
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros- Streetcore
Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles- The Grand Bounce
Paul Westerberg- Stereo
Eddie Vedder- Into the Wild
Ron Hawkins- Chemical Sounds
Bill Janovitz- Up Here
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
All Bruce Springsteen albums are titled under 'Bruce Springsteen' other than the live albums, so technically every Boss album is a solo record.
However, I get what you're saying.
Yeah, but you can tell the difference between a Bruce album and a Bruce & the E Street band album, you know with just the acoustic thing going. I like his solo acoustic much better as far as new material. The Born in the USA version on the box set was really good with just the acoustic. I like the super produced one of course as well but the acoustic was just such a different vibe, like more sad and not as empowering as the produced one.
What do you guys think? Best solo effort by a lead........
Im going with
Dan Aurbach-Keep it Hid
Lead of the Black Keys
Great call, this is such a good album.
I'd probably go with:
1. Mark Lanegan - Field Songs (actually, anything by ML could top this list!)
2. Elliott Smith - XO
3. Dan Auerbach - Keep It Hid
4. Tim Rogers - The Luxury of Hysteria
5. Bernard Fanning - Tea And Sympathy

Yes! to Ryan Adams' Love is Hell. I borrowed it from the library and now have it on order from Amazon. I think it was Weird Henry that turned me onto RA, when he posted The Birthday song.
Also, not a front man, but a member of Traffic ~ Dave Mason ~ Let it Flow
My last message to you ~

Since you mentioned Traffic I'd give a vote to "Back in the High Life Again" by Stevie Winwood. May not be the best but it was damn good .
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)
What You Giving
I suggest you step out on your Porch.

*** I know Izzy wasn't a 'front man', though he takes the lead vocals on a couple of songs on the Use Your Illusion albums. Izzy was, in my opinion, a key creative force behind Gn'R. This is a very solid, rootsy solo album***
I'm a big fan of Scott Weiland's 12 Bar Blues just because it's so out-there, but Tommy Rogers' album Pulse takes it for me. For him to go from a progressive death metal band, to making an album with so many different styles and 90% sung vocals, is amazing. Plus, the songs are very good in their own right.
Thanks EPOTTSIII!

He's not technically a "frontman" but I'm particularly partial to Tom Morello (The Nightwatchman) - The Fabled City.
And of course Madcap Laughs and Barrett by Syd Barrett.
Don't own the fabled city, do have his first one. "One Man Revolution" which was good.

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
Iggy Pop - Lust For Life
Roger Waters - The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking
Lou Reed - Transformer
But with Peter Gabriel getting a lot of talk here, I gotta mention Phil Collins "No Jacket Required".
Staying with the 80's pop rock theme, Lionel Ritchie's "Can't Slow Down" was pretty good.
And... of course.. the frontkid for the Jackson 5 - Michael Jackson's "Thriller".
Guess I forgot about Waters cause he sorta had a co-frontman thing going with Gilmour. His "Pros and Cons" album is brilliant.

Nope, I haven't...will look into it. Thanks!
Hell yeah on the Bill Janovitz love. Tip o' the cap to you!
I was a huge fan of the Crown Victoria album he fronted on (not sure if that's really a solo album).
As always, these threads derail from "best" to "ones eveyone likes" ... so, I'll toss this one out:
Julian Plenti - Is Skyscraper
(It's Paul Banks form Interpol ... he went by a different ame for the solo album).
Really liked it.
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez
And of course Madcap Laughs and Barrett by Syd Barrett.
Easily the greatest CD I own (and I have over 500).
