I decided not to even bother

getting up to Newark on a Thursday night would be a royal pain in the ass

    oh well, I'll live :D
Don't come closer or I'll have to go
  • I work exactly 50 yards from the venue. It is indeed beautiful and within a 8-10 minute walk from Newark Penn Station. (amtrak/nj transit)
And if you're disabled (or really lazy) you could take the light rail extension that extra distance right to the venue.

One thing to keep in mind for that night in particular is that it takes place on a Thursday.

There's an outdoor concert series called Sounds of the City (3 bands play there at NJPAC every Thursday all summer) that starts around 5pm and runs till about 8:30-9:00pm right in front of the venue.

It's typically either funk, jazz, latin or some sort of rap hybrid each time. I've caught a couple of the bands after work there and it's pretty cool, and also tends to get much more crowded as the night goes on.

It'll be interesting to see how the EV crowd mixes with this event that night.

I'll be there that night looking for a single ticket....keep me in mind.

I commute through Newark Penn Station every day, but since you actually work there, can you recommend a cool bar/place for a meet up pre show? OTHER than the Blue Comet that is? Hahahahaha ... sorry, but I hit that place only when I miss a train and have to wait there for an hour or more...
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!

    Good point.....
If you walk out the back door of the station, look across the way and there's a decent place there called MMMBello's (yes, multiple M's). Good bar grub and decent prices.

Other than that you have tons of excellent Portugese/Spanish places nearby but they don't really qualify as a PJ pre-show venue.

I just got a reservation at the Bistro that is on the venue site.
    Anyone ever eat there?
Not like I don't have time to cancel...But looks like a nice sit down place. I didn't want the pre-fix dinner. Usually too much food for me.
Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!

Yes the Newark Light Rail goes right to the venue, the Newark Light Rail (not to be confused with the Newark Subway line) connects Newark Broad Street Station and Newark Penn Station with a stop at the NJPAC.

Here's a map, sorry if it comes out big. Just scroll until you see the NJPAC.

    http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/LightRail/NLR.pdf

You can either grab the Light Rail at Newark Penn Station (connect to PATH, Northeast Corridor, Raritan Valley, North Jersey Coastline, Amtrak Trains) or Newark Broad Street STation (Morris and Essex, Montclair, Boonton, Gladstone line).

That's good enough for me ... Just someplace to get a couple of beers.
I think we should designate MMMBELLO'S the official EdSoloNewark Pre Show gathering spot .. see you there!

I am in! Personally, I think that the NJPac Show may top NYC shows, as the venue is quite new and I hear the acoustics are top notch.

I think first reservation is at 5pm. I picked that even if it is a little early. If doors open at 6:30 it will be perfect! Going with my sister who lives right out of Seattle. She is here visiting w/ her 4 kids. Right up her ally, EV and a seat!

It is a nice sit down place but...there will be a loud concert just outside the windows of it starting at 5:45pm that day.

There's another "nice" place within walking distance (about a block) called Don Pepe. That's the closest of the dozens of Portugese/Spanish restaurants that Newark is famous for.

However, if your waiting for public on sale I'd concentrate on phones because the njpac site will be as slow as, you know. It is a highly detailed system where you can actually pick you exact seat but i assume the haven't seen the likes of rabid pj fans.

Lastly, to the dude who made the Compton comment you should take your show on the road your kind aren't welcome here.

To all else, good luck and consider the tops dinner in East Newark for good NJ diner food and beers before the show - portions are huge and the food is good. I may go there myself. (ps - i have no affiliation with the joint other than going there from time to time :))

compton was a joke dude (hence the :) ) chill

although the neighborhood isn;t that great

Hi Guys, I would highly recommend Scully's for good eats and drinks. It's really close to Newark Penn Station and a nice walk from the theater.
http://www.scullyspublickhouse.com/. The Bistro is a good option, but you must have a reservation as it is a sounds of the city night and it will be crowded. As for hotels the Robert Treat Hotel is right across the street, but it's a little pricey. Hope that helps!

I was thinking that McGovern's Tavern is more my speed.

It is right down the street from NJPAC, and perhaps the closest tavern:
    http://tinyurl.com/62mvu7

Their website (http://www.mcgovernstavern.com/) shows a decent menu for pre-concert grub, and they have a "Thirsty Thursday" special $1.50 Domestic Drafts and $3.00 Well Drinks from 4 PM to 6 PM.

If you want closer, then this is the place. http://www.kilkennyalehouse.net/. It is in a safer area than McGoverns in my opinion and right down the street.
  • I was all for buying tickets to this show......And I think I have pretty good luck getting tickets online......

But I decided it wasn't that smart since I'm on unemployment and need money to live.....
When this just feels like spinning plates.

It seems like they are a block away from one another. Not being familiar with Newark, is there much difference in safety during daylight hours between these 2 blocks?
