Seems like a really cool, nice guy. He inspires me to play.

...sigh. really? That's how it's gonna be?
Well, Dave A shits on MC on Blood, Rats, Leash, Solat, Spin TBC, Go, Animal, WMA, Glorified G, Dissident, Last Exit, Tremor Christ, Daughter, Corduroy, Betterman, Immortality, Porch, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Garden, Once and even Not For You.
MC doesn't do bad on Release and Black though. But what do I know. I've only been playing a drum kit for a quarter century.

Yes, let's do that...
The reason I love Dave on pretty much anything early is not only the timing, but his cymbal work. Matt Cameron plays cymbals so infrequently, it's like he's being charged $100 per hit. Some people chalk that up to "subtlety", but I say it's completely boring, dry, and uninspired. And if it's "subtlety", what's with the drumfills being crammed into spaces which make no sense? I agree MC is a monster player, but on the early stuff, Dave rules. Wish there was clearer sound and video on the first, but this'll do for now.

yup! Actually, it was my 15 signs. I attached them to frizbee shaped matboards, and chucked them at ed the whole night from front row center. He smiled and read them, and showed one to Matt who kinda shrugged his shoulders as if to say "sure, why not". ...but stone.
the whole thing was captured on www.pearljambootlegs.com. it's towards the end of Evolution.

Dave said that the band made that up, just so they didn't have to admit they fired him.
...and to your other comment, yeah Ed looked totally up for having me on stage, and Matt seemed ok with it. But when Ed looked at Stone, he just got a look from Stone like "cmon, Ed, lets just move on". Breath was almost played in NJ by yours truly.

The matt vid is way better. Dave jsut hits cymbals, thats about it.... If there were 10 different matt cam vids all playing evenflow, I guarentee you every video would be much different. Matt makes up fills on the spot like its his job. He is constantly improvising, and that drum fill at 4:16 is proof. Its completeley random and spontaneous, which is how all drummers shoudl play. You could say Dave improvises more but I would hardly call what he does improvising. And Matt definately plays Not For You better than Dave, same with Corduroy, those are two songs he always adds different things to each time he plays.

Sammi: Wanna just break up?
great question. I didn't list that song in my list above because it's kinda like pizza. Even bad pizza is good pizza. Anyway, I like Matt Chamberlain best, though his history with the band was short. I tried to find the best example of each drummer's version of Alive.
First I like Matt Chamberlain

Second I like Dave A

Fourth I like Dave Krusen (bad video, but only one I can find)

I think if you used the Immagine In Cornice Alive instead of that bad performance on Jools Holland, Matt Cameron would at the top. Matt C didn't do anything special for that video and I don't like his loose tempo...

yyyuupp.... Matts performance for alive was much better in IIC. Anyway I think Matt plays alive best. His drum fills during the solo fit in perfectly with mikes guitar and the crowd shouting "yeah!!!" It adds so much to it. I also have to say that Jack plays it the worst too....soooooo boring.

As I meant to say before, Chamberlain, Abbruzzese and Cameron are all pretty good. While I think Chamberlain is the best on that song, I enjoy Abbruzzese a close second, and Matt not too far behind that. It's a pretty basic song really. Not too much for the differences to be noticed on.

Well, no that's not all Dave does. He also times his crashes to the guitar changes. Look at this video of Blood. Listen to the timing of Dave's crashes. He hits them four times, each time around, timed with the guitar changes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulEcTSUyWwY
Now listen to Matt on the same song. He's ignoring the guitar changes, and hits the crash cymbals 6 times each time around. It's like he's ignoring the music. Sounds as arbitrary as a toy monkey drumming. Even Jack Irons played this song better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc3XClcTI-s
I could also go into the lack of MC's hihat rudiments on this song, but I'll leave that whole thing alone for the moment to keep things shorter.
I agree. He likes to make stuff up a lot. He plays lots of fills, and does it different every time. I love improvisation when it fits. On evenflow (and others) he puts it in places it doesn't fit (though you're making it clear you do like it).
On songs like evenflow, he plays it super basic for 90% of the song, then crams fills in to the other 10%. Doesn't jive. It fits HIS style, but that doesn't fit with the song. I think songs like Severed Hand and so on, he rocks those toms, and it sounds great. On songs like evenflow, he forces fills, and does nothing but bore me the rest of the time. There's a reason it's a bathroom break song now, when it used to not be, and it's not because of the age of the song.
Dave came up with his own improvised version of evenflow, and then kept that arrangement whenever he played it. It was a busy arrangement, but he kept it tight, bright, and wet.
I don't think all drummers should play random and spontaneous. I prefer listening to songs and playing drums for the musicality of it, and how well it works with a particular song. Most often that means not playing randomly, just as a singer singing random, spontaneous words would also not work on most songs. Or a guitarist or bassist playing random, spontaneous chords would typically not work (except a during a deliberate solo).
I wouldn't say Dave was a improviser. He is extremely technical, in a similar way to how tool's Danny Carey is extremely technical but doesn't seem to improvise, and I think that Dave simply didn't want to inject random drum fills, and drum solos into places that it didn't fit. MC doesn't seem to mind doing just that, regardless if it fits.
PJ's later albums have a lot of tom work, which is built around MC's strengths so those songs live with the improvisations work quite well - but put on a recent Porch live, and it simply, completely bores me, where before it had SO much energy and life with Dave.
And Carey can easily kick the shit out of all of the PJ drummers, including Cameron, and still have time for ice cream.
I disagree on NFY. Dave was tighter. Dave played it extremely tight, and then exploded into a loose hihat, then back to very tight. Watch the video - explodes at 0:55 and back very tight and SIMPLE at 1:15. Dave kept it a simple 1 snare hit to 1 bass hit for the majority of the song. I enjoyed the lack-of-swing that the song had, as it had an extremely straight forward, determined drive to it. Almost hypnotic in it's simplicity during the tight parts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z7eZGRlKd0
When MC plays it, he adds a lot more bass drum hits to it. Like twice as many. He's also looser on the hihat. (skip to 1:00 mark)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZPa1EPYHkE
On Corduroy, I've kinda grown to like MC's improvisations on that, because the rest of the band is jamming too. Reminds me of seeing the Grateful Dead back in the early 90's.
I've gotta ask 12345AGNST1, are there ANY pj songs you prefer Dave A over MC on? Or do you simply have a blanket policy that MC is the best drummer on every song they ever made. (I'm excluding Krusen, Chamberlain and Irons intentionally)
