Of criminals using 'mental illness' as an excuse ? You consider this 14 year old boy to be a criminal who is using mental illness as an excuse ? That means you're stating this 14 year boy knows he can get away with jail time for this murder if he uses mental illness as an excuse. Really ? You believe that a 14 year old boy went through the thought process of tricking the judicial system into finding him not criminally responsible which re-assured himself that he could get away with a murder and so he murdered.

    C'mon man ...

No offense but you may want to change your screen name.

Here is the real problem like it or not.
"The doctor testified that Castro has a history of depression, suicidal behaviour, hallucinations, bipolar disorder and anxiety. He also said the teen had suffered physical abuse as a toddler by his mother's boyfriend"

Sure, this kid needs help but are the authorities looking for the abusers of this child and going to go lock them up ?

If you don't like my THOUGHT that is not my problem.
As is the case with many child killers they and their lawyers always use mental illness as an excuse for their evil crime.

Obviously this kid has some mental illness, but it doesn't sound to me, just from this article, that he qualifies for an insanity defense by any means. This is a heinous crime, and at his young age at that..he needs to be confined for a very, very long time (if not forever) in a prison or a mental institution because if he isn't, he will definitely do something like this again in the future. One of the things that bother me about things like this is whether they try him as an adult or a juvenile. With a crime like this, I think he should be tried as an adult for sentencing purposes. This is a very dangerous individual.

For their 'evil' crime ? Some crimes that are not evil ? :D
They & their lawyers ? Right. Because the 14 year old boy is saying to his lawyer, "Right on. I can use mental illness as an excuse ? Fuck, I'm glad you're my lawyer. What should I say to the shrink ? Out of body experience ? Oh, ok, I've read about that somewhere."

    Absurd.

I agree. I also think the sentencing should be THIS KID WAS ABUSED AND SO HE IS FUCKED BY NO CHOICE OF HIS OWN AND IN ALL PROBABILITY WILL BE BECOME EVEN MORE DISTURBED AS TIME GOES ON ... GET A DOCTOR AND A COUNSELLOR

I'm not being a smart ass man. Sure, it comes across like that but I'm serious dude. Your take on the matter gives this kid no chance that's what I don't like. The kid is not at fault here. The abuser of that kid is. To think differently & to say it's the kid & his lawyers using mental illness as an excuse is backwards.

I would think that he had already had a doctor and a counselor if those diagnoses they listed were already made prior to him doing this. For some things all the doctors or counselors in the world cannot effectively rewire brain circuitry.

Eye for an Eye isnt a solution to a crime...everyone ,even the worst criminal must have the right to defent himself, its called Democracy,Justice
i think this is a more general issue..society and families need to work more hard for not let 14years old boys become murderers
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

He didn't get the right to defend himself.
Therefore this evil asshole shouldn't have that right!
