Rolling Stone Readers Best Lead Singers #7

Eddie Vedder at #7. Kurt Cobain at 10 and Chris Cornell at 9.

In 1990 Eddie Vedder was working at a gas station when his buddy Jack Irons gave him a demo tape of a Seattle band searching for a new singer. While surfing, Vedder came up with lyrics for the three songs and sent the tape back to the band with his contributions. They were blown away and Vedder was soon asked to join what became Pearl Jam. One of the songs on that tape, "Alive," was blaring out of countless bedrooms across America within about a year. Since then Vedder has become one of the most imitated singers in rock, but nobody has come close to matching his ferocious wail.

where's brian wilson? he's better than all of them. john lennon at #8? the guy changed the face of music and he's behind jim morrison? what about hendrix?
and i disagree with eddie at #7. sorry. he's awesome, but there's no way he's in the top 10 of all time.
zero objectivity, total subjectivity
Robert Plant deserves to be in the top 2, right behind Freddy Mercury, without question. Had an enormous range and more vocal power than any rock singer ever(he could keep up with John Bonham without a mic). Also, huge range of styles he could sing covincingly, with tons of dynamics.
Ed deserves to be top 10, based on vocal recognition alone. I think you could put somebody like Axl Rose in there for a similar reason.
The Beatles all work against each other. I always thought George had the nicest voice.
Brian Wilson should be there, but maybe some don't think of him as a singer. Conversations about him usually just involve his overall creativity.
I'd get rid of Jagger and Morrison if we're talkin singers and not front men.
okay that makes more sense. lol i guess i could have figured that out by reading the title of this thread
i don't know how anyone could have a conversation about brian wilson and not appreciate his voice... him and carl had two of the nicest voices from the 60s.
and yes, george harrison had an amazing voice.
Well The Beach Boys were mainly a harmony band, I know they had great individual voices and didn't harmonize on every song, but for most people when they think of them they think of them harmonizing, so to that maybe hurt his chances. Everybody in CS&N (and sometimes Y) had beautiful voices, but it's hard to pick one of them out as the lead singer because I always think of how beautiful they sounded together.

I personally wouldn't have him on the top 10 at all, but that's just my opinion.
Really he's an average singer...
Based on a readers poll it's great to see Eddie is well thought of.. And with my bug rose tinteds on he damn well deserves it
agreed! and shannon hoon should be on there somewhere imo

He's one spot above William Hung and one spot below that alien singer with the crazy looking lips that performed in Jabba's Palace.
Lennon
Morrison
Mercury
I'm going with Plant ....
This RS list was obviously fixed!
:-)
:-)
Robert Plant is #1,no one can top him IMO
Jim Morrison, Roger Daltry, Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger - all great singers, great frontmen too
Eddie completely deserves to be in the list, should be higher than Bono
cool list

Nice to see things are finally starting to swing Eddie's way in this debate. It would have swung years ago if Kurt didn't kill himself.
Pearl Jam bootlegs:

You folks are hilarious. Love Eddie, but Bono, Jim Morrison and Plant are just about where they should be. I never really got the U2 hate around here. When it comes to selling out stadiums and keeping rock alive in the mainstream (face it, most people beyond are jamily don't even know PJ is still making music), Bono and his voice will always get my respect.
because bono all of a sudden cares about africa when u2 is releasing a cd. i'm sure pearl jam would still be in the news if they hopped on the donating bandwagon before every album release.
sadly, they do it 24/7 with no media coverage. stupid pearl jam.
(edit: this sarcasm is in no way directed towards you. it's just my annoyance with the praise bono gets)
