... i know how much we talk about OUR HOLY GRAILs .... and everyone has a different one .... mine is the JD bottle set .... i have always wanted it ..

so i was just over at the TOOL web site and there is a little write up about tool collectables ... some shit i never ever heard of .... if your a fan i recommend you heading over to the site and reading it ...

hear is a little excerpt i found amazing .. now imagine Pearl Jam doing something like this ....

.........Which brings us to the "holy grail" that I mentioned earlier. No, it's not a cheap guitar signed hastily backstage by all four band members as part of some radio promo. It also doesn't concern bizarre video props or some Xeroxed set-list that includes "The Grudge", and which is also signed by Maynard (most likely fabricated). It's not even the lyrics to a popular Tool song hand written on a Ralph's grocery bag. No, this is something REALLY special. Are you ready? Suppose I was to tell you that there is a Tool song - recorded in a studio - that hasn't been heard except for by a handful of people, and that virtually no one outside of the band (and a few others) is aware of its very existence? Keep in mind, this is not a cover (not the rumored "Crazy Train"), nor is it a glorified segue that never made it onto a record. This is an original full-blown Tool song complete with vocals and lyrics. The title of this tune is "Problem 8 (The Riemann Hypothesis)", and it was recorded many years ago - so long ago, in fact, that I don't remember who played bass, although I want to say it was Justin. The length is somewhere in the six-minute range (if my memory serves me correctly), but whatever it is, the exact time had something to do with the unsolved and mysterious nature of the title. Now, not only was the song professionally recorded; it was actually 'issued' in a manufactured medium (though I'm not going to say whether this was vinyl, a CD, or cassette tape). Because of the ingenious way it was made available to the public, "Problem 8" , in my opinion, constitutes the ultimate hidden track. Only, don't go looking for it among your collection (most of you, that is!), as there are no more than 30 copies on the planet. As for those who have one, most, I'm sure, aren't aware of it, even though it might be staring them right in the eye on a near daily basis. The reason they aren't aware of it, is because they'd never think to play it. Okay, enough said..

it truly amazes me the stuff this band does and how they do it ..... the history behind their songs go back hundreds of years ... they dont just write songs ... they rewrite history for the present day music fan to grasp ..

    I've read this too.
The band put the shirt with the Aenima smoke box on the back for sale again in their 'shopping bazaar' as a collectable.
    Great T.
I'm anxious for their new album.
Danny Carey (drummer of tool) mentioned on a radio interview that the song THE GRUDGE from the Lateralus album took a year to complete ... that's insane!

i think aenima and lateralus were huge albums
  • I also love TOOL and just found out a few years ago that Lateralus emulated Fibonacci's sequence of numbers. I wish there were (or I were aware of) more artists that incorporated meaningful elements in their work...philosophy, literature, science...probably why I'm such a LOST freak too.

I wish I took the time to see them live when I was younger...I'm definitely too old for metal show nowadays.

you must go see them live ..... they put on the BEST SHOW ..your not just their to listen to the music ... your part of the show . and visuals are insane .... people coming down from the rafters .. stages that look like they are on fire .. and the best part .. the first 10-15 min its kinda like Where's Waldo... you never know where Maynard will be singing . either behind a curtain the entire show .. sitting on a stool behind danny . dressed a woman .. once i was at a show and he never even came out on stage . he sang from his dressing room for 2 hours.

agreed, not too old at all. i also, personally, wouldn't call Tool 'metal'. They're more of,.. Spiritualistic Inner-Self-Searching Art. the name says it all.. Tool. ;)

They've really gotten away from this kinda stuff over the last few years though, since 10,000 Days tour started. The stage is it's own big ass video screen, which kicks ass, and there is a cool laser show, and the video screens of course, but that's really about it. Maynard pretty much always hangs out in back by Danny on his little riser and stays there the whole show.

Regardless, TOOL is by far the best live show you can see (sorry PJ), but I'm a huge TOOL fan as well.

But yeah, somebody needs to figure out they have the crazy hidden song and get it posted up on the internet.

Damn TOOL really needs to release a new album.

Do you think it's a red herring? I absolutely love this band, but I gave up on their scavenger hunts ages ago. I agree they're not to be missed live, too. Especially indoors recently, where the lasers can bounce off the walls and ceiling of an arena. It really brought Lateralus to another level for me. What they've done with their stage show over the last few years is impressive.

Bonus: I saw a couple years ago where Trey called them the most psychedelic band around. Thought that was really cool.

To the guy who said he was too old for a Tool show... I saw them 2 years ago at a 6,000 seat outdoor venue and scored GA pit tickets. I hate moshing and all that stuff but I was able to just stand there with no problem. The crowd was not rowdy at all.
