wow.... how many times is ames going to reuse that image?

it looks nice, but it's far from an original idea...

PJ and EV should stop using AMES, so unoriginal and their prints are getting so so boring. How do they get paid to just recycle the same image over and over.

Yeah it's been done before, but it still looks pretty nice.

May be recycled, but still well executed.

I'm not arguing that it's a nice image, but art should be about original ideas.... this is the third time through the wash for this image - I don't understand why you would pay ames bros 3 times for essentially the exact same idea.... seems ludicrous to me...

It's a traditional surf image though, Rip Curl, Quiksilver etc have been using it repetatively for the last 40 years or so... I wouldn't even consider it an Ames design in that context....besides I doubt I would buy it, unless I was at the gig. I should imagine it would be a lucky (or unlucky in some ways) person who had been at all the shows a variation of this image has been used at. However much we value them as pieces, they are in a way, simply another item of promotional merchandise.

I shall not get into the original art debate, for what is actually original is down to self perception. You could say one landscape is much like another...

  • I think the evolution of the style is worth any similarity. Over the years, Ames has streamlined their art, and this poster illustrates their evolution with the distilling of the rip-curl pop-out above the bed of flowers down to it's most simplistic and pop-art-ish.
It's funny how we can talk positively about hearing the same songs played 100's of times the same way, but a visual artist uses an image (and not the same image) THREE times over the course of 10 or 15 years, and they're ripped apart for it.

Sheesh… You know, some people don't even know about this awful poster-similarity issue because they're too busy avoiding landmines and bullets. Be thankful. Ukes not nukes.

    Thanks Yvi.
I do like PJ Hawaii 06 better because it has more colors, flowers are more colorful, but I have to say I was hoping to see something similar to that (surfer image) and I don't mind similarity, maybe now I can frame both posters together.

    I like it

both are very valid points. And you're right leanne, the idea of "original" ideas in art is very subjective. I guess I'm just a little irked as it just seems like laziness on behalf of Ames to be using this idea again and putting very little variation in the poster from the other two editions.

I mean, it's still a nice looking poster... I guess I'm just.... well i dunno...

It arrived today... Quite a nice poster... Ames seem to look after me with a relatively low number... The Euro sub I got low numbers, and this one is quite low too... It is longer and skinnier than the regular posters...
