Beards and job interviews...shave it off or leave it?

edited April 2011 in All Encompassing Trip
I am reading some tips online about job interviews, common advice is to look sharp, professional,......clean shaven.
What are your thoughts?
Not too long ago I decided to try the beard look and I feel more confident and happy with this look, a lot of people mention it suits me, otherwise I look too baby faced haha.
It is well trimmed, not long.
Should I get rid of it or keep it when I get called for a job interview?
I hate having to change my appearance to please others.

If it's clean/well trimmed/tidy/what have you, I see no reason to not keep it. My boyfriend has a beard and he manages to not look shady with it.

I say it depends on the job....I'm in the same situation, waiting on an interview call, been growing my beard since December but,the job I'm getting is beard friendly..If its a job involving food or an office setting, shave it and grow it back once you're in.Anything else just keep it well groomed..no matter what, good luck.

    Thanks.
I read the same thing you said on yahoo answers, grow it back once you get the job.
Isn't that not being truthful to the employer about who you are?

I think it really depends on the position you are applying for. That said as long as it is as you say it is well kept I don't think it will be too much of an issue.

If it's well kept and you want to keep that look for a while, then keep the beard. Personally, I've never had any problems with my beard/goatee while interviewing for jobs. On the morning of the interview, I just make sure it's trimmed and even.

Keep it bro, I have had mine for years and i'm a chef and never missed out on job because of it. just make sure you give it a trim before you go in, if they need you to change who you are then do you really think it's a job that's going to make you happy...

Some shadow could be acceptable, but I dont think a thick beard would play well.

Shadow is never acceptable. If need be, have a tidy up shave just before the interview.

Beard is borderline. Not many men have a 'good' beard. Ie not scraggly/patchy, of an even colour or not so full that it 'hides' your face. If you are one of the lucky ones sporting the 'perfect' beard (and I mean perfect), trim it evenly, seriously tidying the neckline and make sure the mustache doesn't overhang on your lips. Whatever style it is, from goatee to full, neat edges.

    Clean, neat and professional.

This advice from one whose job was interviewing management consultants to put on jobs with major international clients.

personally speaking like redrocks said perfectly shaped and even trimming is fine.
I think clean shaven for interviews is very old school. I remember my step mom coming home
from night school saying that she was just told in her business class that
NO ONE would hire a guy with any type of facial hair on an interview.

on the other hand....what does facial hair have to do with job performance....

I personally would not go to an interview with a beard unless it was very well groomed. However, mine comes in patches so I can't even consider it for myself.

What does everyone think about sideburns? Mine go to the bottom of my earlobes and are medium thickness. SHould they be shorter?

If you like the beard then let it be, just keep it clean bro, otherwise why should it matter? Don't sell yourself out. You like it, keep it, if someone else will not give you a job because you have hair on your face, why would you want to work for a person like that?
