Ten was re-released as a remaster and remix. Remember? 2 cds/lps.
Difference is huge between these two.
VS Vitalogy is only being released as Remasters. There was no remixing. This means the sound will be almost the same as with the original issues. Only improved. My only worries is that they made it sound louder, wich would be a sad thing. This will mean nothing if you will only listen to these in your car.
And God bless them for re releasing these! We finaly have a chance of having Pearl Jam vinyls at a great price!
Sensible post! Yep I think some people are thinking of the 'Redux' as a remaster - when in actual fact it was a completely unique project to strip back the album. The Ten remaster was the other disc.Cancel my subscription to the Ressurection

i'm thinking of selling the boxset when i get it in the mail now. i wish i'd realized. dumb me.
i wouldn't say Ten redux is better. because that's a matter of opinion. but it is different than the original.*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*0 -

I love the Redux, and I listen to it a lot more than the original these days - but I did put on the original recently and it still sounded awesome in its own right! The question I find myself asking when I listen to the Redux, is what would have happened with the band if this was the album they'd put out at the time. Who knows?? Can't help wondering thoughCancel my subscription to the Ressurection

I'm not sure how beneficial remasted versions of vs or vitalogy will be as I love the production on those albums, but the remastered Ten is noticably different and I'm someone who has an untrained ear and limited technical knowledge. My friend who's more of a casual fan but a musician loves the sound of the new Ten and I'd have to agree. My PJ shows:

The only good thing about the ten remastered cd is that it does sound better in my car than the original purple one i had. It has more punch. But if I want to hear it in my house, with a lot of volume it fails to deliver. I prefer the purple one instead.
Now, I recently bought a turntable, my first. I´m still waiting for it to be delivered. I can´t wait to spin the remastered ten vinyl and enjoy the dynamics on that baby! Wich is why I am excited about the vs and vitalogy vinyls as well. Not only that but all the extra stuff. I am a sucker for those small things. And I really appreciate them.
Not a fan of the remix version of ten (redux), but with the turntable this might change. Never was excited about the remixing of ten. I love the original mix, voice effects and everything.
Again, I think a lot of people are confusing remastering with remixing. Vs and Vitalogy were not remixed, only remastered.IN THE DARK, ALL CATS ARE BLACK.0 -
These days the vast majority of "remastered" albums sound like crap. They are usually just compressed (i.e. louder) than the original issue. There really isn't much to remaster when it comes to modern albums that were recorded on state of the art equipment. Most of the CDs issued in the heyday of the media (1990-1996) sound great.
However, remastering does have its place... and when done correctly, it's fantastic. Just take a listen to the The Beatles reissues from last year or the releases from audiophile labels such as Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, Audio Fidelity, etc."I'll end up alone like I began..."

Ten is the only album that really "needed" it IMO. Everything else is just for $. I cant imagine how they could make Riot Act or Yield sound any better. Those 2 albums have perfect production, any changes could only make it worse.
I doubt ill be buying any of the other remasters TBH.5/28/06, 6/27/08, 10/28/09, 5/18/10, 5/21/10

Beatles remasters are a great example. The led zeppelin remastering is great, too. But remember, the original cd issues of these albums, as with other "old" records, were just issued as a vinyl to cd convertions and this sounded poorly, it seems as I never witnessed this, I was a small kid back then. When they remastered these in the early 90´s the difference was remarkable, becuase they went back to the orignal masters of the recordings and "remastered" them all over again to fit the cd correctly.
The Beatles remasters sound even better because of the new technology in the recording and mastering industry. Wich is why the entire led zep catalogue were re-re-re-issued yet again three years ago, wich is a total bummer because I bought the box set "complete studio recordings" released in 1993. And now in 2008 they released the new box set that includes the complete soundtrack for the song remains the same movie, wich was not included in the box i own.
But the Pearl Jam catalogue was released in the 90´s and beyond (duh!) and there will not be a big a difference between the original issues and these "remastered" new releases. Except the ten redux (remixed version) wich is a different case. Yet again i have to repeat, many people here are confusing remastering with remixing. Two completely different things.
IMO, if you will be buying only the cd remastered vs and vitalogy, there is no point, unless you are interested in some new artwork and bonus tracks. Vinyl release is great because of the prices of the original issues these days. To me the deluxe and super deluxe is the real deal, becuase of the boston show and extra stuff.
The only thing that I felt was missing in the ten box set (or other versions of the reissues) was an essay made by someone that experienced those years with the band. There has been no mention of something like this with the vs or vitalogy reissues. You know, something like what cameron crowe did for the led zeppelin box set.IN THE DARK, ALL CATS ARE BLACK.0 -

avocado needs it. it sounds like crap when the volume is up especially in the car.force-10 wrote:The only thing that I felt was missing in the ten box set (or other versions of the reissues) was an essay made by someone that experienced those years with the band. Yeah, I am an extreme sucker for things like that. Maybe they will release a thing like this in a book and we will have to pay more money for it. Or on yet another reissue some 15 years from now.IN THE DARK, ALL CATS ARE BLACK.0 -
