As luck would have it, I get to catch a couple of his shows in California while I am traveling there for work!! So excited!!

No idea what he will play, but his band is interesting.

Chris Robinson - vocals, guitar
Neal Casal - guitar (Neal was going to be the Crowes guitarist in 2005 before Marc Ford rejoined)
Adam McDougal - keyboards (current member of The Black Crowes)
George Sluppick - drums (not sure where he is from)
Mark "Muddy" Dutton - bass (interesting because he was the bassist for Burning Tree and Fuzz Machine - both Marc Ford's bands).

Anyway - ticket in hand for 3/28 at the Echoplex and looking to hit a couple more.

Whoo!!!!

I'm going to hit one of the San Diego shows. He's doing a similar thing to the echoplex shows at the casbah, and playing every Tuesday for a month.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

That should be awesome! Love the amount of tour dates.

The only problem, this means no Cardinals dates.

looking forward to him expanding his tour. I always had a blast at the NEw Earth Mud shows. It will be nice to hear some of that material again, his second solo disc was really good.

I need to re-familiarize myself with that and New Earth Mud. Something tells me there won't be any Crowes songs played.

Yeah Chris never played any Crowes songs that I can recall. The first time I saw him it was mostly covers which were all awesome the next few times he either had the material or his second album was out and was about 50/50.

Very excited for Monday. Getting off work at 5:00 or so and then making my way over there.

Did I mention the ticket was only $12? That's right $12. And he's playing with a whole band! They have mouths to feed! I don't know how he manages it. And there must be a crew too. $12. Hmmm.

set list looked really good. the reviews are veryy kind on the other forums. hope he heads out of CA later in the year.

and even a crowes song in the set, that was shocking.

Finally got to write something down. OK, so first off, I got to meet Chris briefly! We were standing outside on the sidewalk waiting to get in and he just walks up to the line like he's a fan. Walks right up to me and says "Hey buddy, can I cut in line?" Recognition set in and everyone laughed and so did he and then he just said "We're gonna have a great show" and walked off!

Didn't know what to expect because I had never seen him solo. Well, it ended up being a near-capacity crowd, but I got right on the rail, directly in front of him. The sets were a good mix of covers, solo stuff and a Crowes song, which was kind of a surprise. Just like the Crowes, his band extended out several jams at the end of songs and between songs. Appaloosa was given a heavier treatment than the album version.

Chris went with the 2-set format used by the Crowes several times since 2005. Both sets were full on electric. Neal Casal was more than capable on the guitar and Muddy on bass was fantastic. He was really into it. And anyone familiar with the Crowes knows Adam McDougal and he was solid.

40 Days was the perfect opener. This Magnificent Distance is an incredibly underrated album. Full of strong songs so to get any of them was a treat. Eagles on the Highway was another highlight for me. I really wanted to hear Like a Tumbleweed in Eden but no luck there. The covers were brilliant. Mister Charlie was a lot of fun. Star Crossed Lonely Sailor is an unreleased song of his and contained a fantastic jam reminiscent of the Crowes at their peak. Dylan's Tough Mama was another perfect choice.

One thing I noticed was a lot of newbies getting into it. During beer runs or talk between sets I heard several people say things like "Wow, I had no idea" or "This is good shit", etc. Chris is the man. He lives and breathes rock and roll and puts all he has into it. I knew there was no way he was going to sit around during this hiatus.

Beware must be a new song. I've never heard it. Liked it though, from what I remember.

Thanks for the review Flagg. I'm with you on this thing of newbies suddenly gravitating back to the Crowes, Chris, etc. which makes it so odd and frustrating that out of nowhere they decided to go away (then again, The Crowes have never really ever made conventional decisions). It seemed like after years of relative obscurity, the last tour and subsequent solo/side projects are garnering a ton of interest. Hopefully it brings them out of this "hiatus" sooner rather than later. I miss them already.

4/10 show at Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace.

The name of this place pretty much says it all.

My wife and I were right up front. This was my second show on this tour (1st was the 1st Echoplex show) and I enjoyed this one much more. They were tighter, but loose at the same time. Chris was in a great mood, goofing with crowd. Early on, the fan kept blowing his sheet music off of his music stand, so my wife pulled out a hair clip and gave it to him. He took it and laughed and said "You might not get this back".

The entire band was very accommodating at this little, tiny place. Got pics with Adam, Muddy and Chris. So cool to watch them unpack and load their own gear. There is this little BBQ pit out back and some picnic tables and we were sitting there eating when a van backs up and out pops Chris, who proceeds to open the back of the van, grab some gear and start hauling it to the stage. Chris was gracious enough to chat after the show and shake hands with several people, even allowing pictures. My wife got a picture with him. He told her she was "rocking out" the whole night. LOL.

It was a great night. If you get a chance to catch this tour, this is the place to catch it. Literally in the middle of nowhere this place can't hold more than 200 people. I think I lost it during Eagles on the Highway. I love that song and it seemed to get a great reaction from the crowd. Just like in LA, I talked to maybe 3 or 4 people who had never seen him or the Crowes live and they remarked about how incredible it was.

Adam was on fire Sunday night. He's really stepped up his game over the last couple of years in my opinion and really seems to fit now. It has finally gotten to the point where I don't think about Weird Ed anymore. On a side note, he told me before the gig that as of right now, this is a 2 year project. They are thinking of cutting a record and taking the tour national when this California thing is done.

Ride was a lot of fun. Really liking Beware and Tulsa Yesterday has Chris road story lyrics all over it. Missed 40 Days this time though.

Also, take note of this. They started at 8:30 and ended at 12:10. Folks that is 3 hours and 40 minutes. 3:40. For $15!!!

Go see this show. If you love rock and roll at all, or understand anything about Chris Robinson you know the man gives it all he has got every time. You won't be disappointed.

Agreed. The Crowes could really use someone with some technical expertise in this area. Most of their live recordings as well as their live DVDs (with the exception of the last one) sound and/or look like shit.
They are inconsistent as well. There are a couple shows from the "Say Goodnight to The Bad Guys" tour that are just plain missing.

Awesome these are being released but I wish they would find someone else to do them because most of these (and many of the BC shows) sound like shit. Whoever is doing these has no idea how to mix anything. They don't sound like the live show at all.

    Which was?

I don't think Freak N' Roll... Into The Fog sounds too bad.
