Come Back Interpretation

OK...I'm using my husbands sign-on to help settle a family-related Pearl Jam lyric debate. In "Come Back"....did she cheat and leave Eddie or did she die? Thanks forum.

It could also be "he"...as in Johnny Ramone. Ed even admitted that most of the record is about him.

I seem to remember reading something saying that this was written from the perspective of Johnny Ramone's wife after he died. Though I could be imagining that since I can't think for the life of me where I might have heard this.

I know this may not be correct, but I always looked at it as the immediate follow up to Army Reserve, the song that precedes it on the album. In other words, the main character in Come Back is the same woman from Army Reserve dealing with how to handle the death of her military husband, and most importantly how to break the news to their young son. It seems that once she was able to do that, Come Back deals with her now finally being able to mourn herself, and the song is an anthem to her late husband. I don't know, like I said this very well could be incorrect. But that's what great about music, each listener can have its own interpretation that affects them in a way it may not affect another.

I never thought about this, but if true Ed is a genius. This would make a lot of sence...Cool interpretation!

This is also my interpretation... As a matter of fact I think that the whole string of songs (Army Reserve, Come Back and Inside Job) are connected. The last song about getting to terms with the loss... I always felt that this album was somewhat of a concept album dealing with different sides of the war in Iraq.

You're not imaging that. You are correct. It's about Johnny from the perspective of Ed and Johnny's wife.

Actually I believe Ed said it was a follow up to Man of the Hour.
