Hey there everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that Purple Day is coming up, it is an event which helps bring awareness about epilepsy and is important to me as I am a sufferer of this disorder. I am going to be hosting my own Purple Day Morning Tea and much as I would love you all to come, might be a little hard to fit you all in my lounge room or for you to blow a few grand on tickets to Adelaide just for one day!
It's awesome if you guys donate to this cause but really all I really ask is for everyone to be understanding of people with this disorder and maybe even learn a little bit about it so it's not so awkward for some of us to be open about it. You guys are awesome and I know most of you are kind-hearted and unjudging anyway but maybe you could pass that on to others who aren't.
Thanks for putting up with me rattling on... :D:D:D

(If you read the next post down, there is information about the CD giveaway)

Quick Facts

Epilepsy affects approximately 1 in 100 people.

At least 1 in every 10 people will have one seizure in their lifetime.

There are approximately 300,000 Canadians living with epilepsy.

There are approximately 3 million Americans living with epilepsy.

There are approximately 50 million people around the world living with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is NOT contagious. Epilepsy is NOT a disease. Epilepsy is NOT a psychological disorder.

There is currently no “cure” for epilepsy. However, for 10-15% of people with epilepsy, the surgical removal of the seizure focus – the part of brain where the person’s seizures start – can eliminate all seizure activity. For more than half of people with epilepsy, medication will control their seizures. Additionally, some children will outgrow their epilepsy and some adults may have a spontaneous remission.

Not everyone can identify specific events or circumstances that affect seizures, but some are able to recognize definite seizure triggers. Some common triggers include:

Forgetting to take prescribed seizure medication
Lack of sleep
Missing meals
Stress, excitement, emotional upset
Menstrual cycle / hormonal changes
Illness or fever
Low seizure medication levels
Medications other than prescribed seizure medication
Flickering lights of computers, television, videos, etc., and sometimes even bright sunlight
Excessive alcohol consumption and subsequent withdrawal
Street drugs

Thanks for taking the time to have a bit of a read. :D:D

After cleaning out my mammoth CD collection, I actually noticed I had 2 copies of the Ten Deluxe CD (features original Ten CD, Redux CD and MTV Live) one I didn't even know that I had and the one that came with my Ten Super Deluxe Box Set. See, epilepsy effects one's memory too!

So I will give it away on here, the only thing you have to do is tell me someone famous who has/had epilepsy. There's heaps of them but try and shock me. :D I'll give it away on the 26th March (Purple Day) :D

    Good luck guys.

Prince admitted on the Tavis Smiley show, there about 2 years ago that he had epilepsy... funny thing is.... he wrote this song, the Sacrifice of Victor back in 1991-92

I was born on a bloodstained table
    Cord wrapped around my neck
Epileptic till the age of seven
I was sure heaven marked the deck

There's something you learn new today :D

Neil Young (but you probably already knew that).

Chris Knox (kiwi musician) - New Zealand indie musician (Toy Love, Tall Dwarfs) has addressed his epilepsy in such songs as "Lapse", and it is also referenced in his album title "Seizure".
He suffered a stroke in June 2009. When Pearl Jam played in Auckland in November 2009 Eddie, Neil & Liam Finn performed Chris' most famous song - 'Not Given Lightly' which the whole crowd sung along to.

My boss has epilepsy and his medication has helped him, he hasn't had a seizure in 30 years. I hope you don't mind me asking, how did you find it when you were pregnant? How old were you when it presented?

I don't mind at all. Mine came out of the blue one day on the way to work, I started hearing past conversations in my head and extreme deja vu. Because it started in my left temporal lobe of my brain, it triggers the memory centre which in-turn makes me feel like i have been places before even if I haven't. Very strange feeling indeed. It took 4 different doctors to diagnose me correctly and when he finally did, I thanked him, walked down the stairs of the doctor's office and had a Grand Mal seizure (when you fall over and shake). I had 3 in a row on the way to the hospital and they were scared that they couldn't stop it.As for being pregnant, my epilepsy had actually been gone for about 2-3 years before so I thought I would be okay. Then at 5 months, it came back out of the blue when I was out at dinner! Just a Petit-Mal (small deja-vu feeling) thank goodness! So they put me back on my medication which was okay to take because my little monkey had already developed. If taken in the first 3 months, it can cause deformaties. I cried for about an hour before taking them though coz I was so careful not to drink or eat anything even mildly risky the whole way through so far and was terrified to take it. But all was well as she is very healthy, weighed nearly 9 pound when she was born and very clever (not that I'm biased or anything). :D Thanks for asking, hope I haven't bored you. :D

Joan of Arc was said to have experienced religious messages through voices and visions which she said others could sometimes experience simultaneously, possibly ecstatic epileptic auras, or idiopathic partial epilepsy with auditory features.

Adam Horovitz (Beastie Boys) his seizures (major) have been brought on by flash photography, but now under control w meds.

Ian Curtis (Joy Division) was diagnosed with epilepsy as a young man and some say it was the reason for his suicide. Must have had a bad time of it.

Danny Glover had epilepsy when he was a teen and young adult. Does it really ever go away?

Richard Jobson of The Skids has absence seizures.

and of course Neil Young, who quit taking meds and uses alternative means to control his seizures. Wonder how that's working out for him (seriously)
    peace,

    Thanks StillHere! :D
I love Joy Division and from what I have heard, he was very scared of his seizures on stage but mind you, they do say people with epilepsy are more suseptible to depression. (not hard to see why though I guess).
And I have heard about Joan of Arc and some people do believe it's paranormal rather than a disorder. They used to say women (not sure about men) were witches if they had seizures and many were burnt at the stake, so thank goodness Lou was born in 1980's!
Hadn't heard about Adam though! I am not photosensitive, they found that out after shining lights in my face for about 45 minutes. :?

    me too..joy division :)

i had always thought of joan of arc as being a sensitive or psychic too, but perhaps it was epilepsy..we'll never know. her visions seemed to be too prophetic and last too long though. i lean toward the psychic/sensitive, since i'm really interested in that sort of thing, being mildly affected with some sort of sensitivity myself, as are most of the women in my lineage. being celtic women..of course we are, right?

A psychic at the Psychic Festival actually told me one day that I had extreme deja-vu because of my past-life and that's why I recognise old buildings and structures even if I have never seen them before. I spat my coffee all over the floor because I hadn't even said hello to him, he was reading my mother's cards! Don't get me wrong, I don't know if I believe that stuff or not but what a bloody good guess! The voices I heard though were more like "Yep, no worries that'll be $10.00" and "Please don't touch the merchandise" kinda work conversations so I can hardly call that psychic! :D

i've always wondered what my "deja vu" episodes are, but after doing some research on the seizure side of it and all the other feelings that go along with that type of seizure,i think i've ruled that out. i think. anyway, its pretty spooky sometimes, yep. years ago, friends and i were traveling down south (USA) and we were in the middle of nowhere in west virginia, headed to georgia. we had to stop to use the ladies room somewhere, and i remember just out of the blue, i said to our driver, if you just get off at that exit there and make a left, there's a little general store, we can use the restrooms there, and prob get something to eat too...I'd NEVER been in west va before that...and it was so weird, but we got off anyway, and there it was...JUST AS I "REMEMBERED" IT! freaky? i'll never forget it. its happened quite a few times since then but none as freaky as that one. but there's other stuff....kinda like "knowing" things that you couldn't possibly know....we can talk about that stuff in another place if you'd like. i find it fascinating, at a bare minimum :)

good luck! good health, peace, jo

Thanks for sharing, and no you didn't bore me at all. It must have been so scary when you had the Grand Mal seizures. I get the odd case of extreme deja-vu and so does my dad, my dad also has very vivid dreams that seem to come true, although these only happen rarely they freak him out.

I think dreams can be pretty telling sometimes, I seem to remember all of mine too.The seizures feel very odd, almost like your winding down, you start to feel your legs go and you just feel really ill and unable to talk. I have it lucky though compared to some, some people actually hallucinate! :? I think that would be absolutely terrible.

Good question, I am not a photosensitive epileptic so that doesn't effect me. Drinking too much wine, not sleeping enough, being anxious and heat are my biggest triggers. For example, I was at work (a hot bakery) and I hadn't bothered drinking water or having my break and all of a sudden this woman started talking and it was like I had dreamt the exact same situation before. I knew everything she was about to say and all I could do was just stand there. Very embarrasing! I hadn't dreamt it and I couldn't really foretell the future or anything, it was just a trick of the mind because it's like an electrical storm that starts off in the memory centre of the brain. Thanks for asking though and once again, sorry if I rambled on too much. Do you want me to enter you in the giveaway???? :)
