  • There have been fatalities. :(

There are reports coming in of two buses crushed under falling buildings, cars filled with rubble (no idea if people inside) and major damage. They have run out of ambulances to ferry the survivors to hospitals.

    Terrible news.

There's a thread in AET too.

It is devastating. I don't have any family down there but my works head office is based in Christchurch. The damage makes the city unreconisable.

    Pictures speak louder than words.

TV on, devastating pictures, just showed how they uncovered someone, terrible. It's worse this time, way worse. 65 dead, number rising. Very sad.

Aussie friend of mine who's a journalist in Sydney, her parents were in NZ when it hit and she made this report

I hope everyone is safe. That part of the world has been hit badly so far this year and I really hope things get better.

    Hey Guys

Hope all in Chur Chur are ok...

I've managed to contact my family. All alive. My aunty's house is ruined. She lives on the hills.

Haven't heard from a couple of friends. Been a long day of worrying....

Bob Parker has confirmed 65 deaths. but 120 trapped people have made it out alive.

    Made world news huh?

  • My brother in law's parents lost their house but were lucky enough to not be in it.

I hope as they search for people in the rubble that many more have luck go their way.

Between the east coast of Australia and NZ, that little space of earth has seen a lot of disaster and pain the last year or so - fire, flood, cyclones, drought and earthquakes.

As Anna Bligh so perfectly said,

    *substitute 'Queenslanders' as fit.

Can I say to Queenslanders everywhere: as we weep for what we have lost, and as we grieve for family and friends, and we confront the challenge that is before us, I want us to remember who we are. We are Queenslanders; we're the people that they breed tough north of the border. We're the ones that they knock down and we get up again. I said earlier this week that this weather may break our hearts, and it is doing that, but it will not break our will and in the coming weeks and in the coming months we are going to prove that beyond any doubt.

Together, we can pull through this and that's what I'm determined to do and with your help, we can achieve that.
