I think my favorite on the album is Street of Dreams though:

I get why so many people hated on it, and I know I'm in the minority but I honestly thought it was a solid 10 out of 10 album and it gets played very regularly around my house. So well written, great lyrics, amazing music.

i like better and street of dreams. personally though, i love riad n' the bedouins. i love the transition between that and sorry. oh and how could i forget there was a time. that song gets me every time.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

I think it's a great album for what it is, it's not a GNR album tho, definately more like an Axl solo album. There Was A Time is an absolute epic, definately the best song on it. Other faves for me include Chinese Democracy, Street Of Dreams and I.R.S.
  • i LOVE this album.

i'm a huge gnr fan. i love axl. i don't care how much of a dick he is. i think he is one of the greatest frontmen ever.

i was totally obsessed with this album for years before it came out. i can still remember getting excited about all the leaks back in 06 (i think). i used to go on gnr forums every day hoping there would be a new leak.
  • I think it's decent, but everything that was great about Guns N' Roses (that Rock n' Roll swagger) is gone. Guns N' Roses was down and dirty rock and roll, what you'd hear at a good bar, partying too on a friday night. Chinese Democracy is not.

I'm the kind of person that tries to stay away from the word 'epic' but there really is no better way to describe that song.

Glad I could finally find a few people to agree with me on this one though. I can't get a single one of my friends turned onto the album. They all bitch and complain that it's not a real GNR album because Slash isn't on it. I say screw Slash let him go play at the Super Bowl with the Black Eye Peas, I'll keep listening to Chinese Democracy haha.

The question is can he have a half decent follow up to CD considering how long it took to drop this album?

I agree - I love it - I was really surprised by how good Axl's lyrics and singing were. The production gives it a certain 'sound' - but the songs are top notch. I played this LOADS last year. Always picked me up - might have to listen again soon

I'm surprised at all the positive reviews. I never heard it. I waited 18 years for it's release, so my plan was to walk by it on the shelf for 18 years. Maybe I'll change my mind.

Love this album... Best two tracks are IRS - Axl's scream followed by that Buckethead solo is absolutely killer. One of the best sustained and highest pitch screams you'll ever hear in music. Sorry is amazing as well - this could easily be on any of the Use Your Illusion albums.

Don't listen to anyone that starts talking about "it took 11 years to come out" and "Axl is a dick," because an album should only be about one thing - the music.

Also, I respect the fact that the only interviews he gave on this album were to his fans on the GNR message boards.

  • Like I said before, it's good, but it's definitely not Guns N' Roses, and not because of the member changes. Just doesn't have that dirty bluesy feel.

This, but there's some pretty sweet tunes. The good stuff is the stuff that has some very old Guns-ish moments buried underneath the production. About 3/4 of the album is quite listenable.

It's good but I was expecting better.
I think Axl is a music genius but this album was just okay.
The Illussion albums are much better!

I liked Better and the other one sounds like something off the Use your llusion albums, not bad, i would rather listen to this than anything Velvet Revolver did.

I like the album a lot - it works if you see it as a solo album by someone who has come back from the brink and 'found himself' - it's incredibly positive. I agree, it's not really anything like a Guns and Roses record (I love Appetite and the acoustic stuff on Lies, tho I don't know the Illusions really)

The one song I would say is 'horrible' on the album is Shackler's Revenge - but the rest are really uplifting. This song is a bit out of place I think, but might sound good on another album

Is that the one you heard? It's probably the darkest, disturbing sounding thing on there - but I don't think it really works like decent dark and disturbing music should do. Maybe they thought it was more GnR. I would think the main fair criticism of some of the songs is that they sound too optimistic and loved up, not in a way that we have come to expect from Axl Rose. It sounds like he's had a lot of therapy to me!

  • I wanted to hate this album, and I waited several months before even listening. And now, I must say I love it more or less start to finish.

Its not GNR, and actually nothing on the album except for Axl's opening wail on the title track reminds me of the original band. I think i'd like it even more if the band name was changed, but I understand why Axl kept it the same.

I agree, however, that it is overproduced almost to a fault. Thats what happens when you sit in a studio for a decade and a half.
