I know I know, If I was in the military, I would probably change my mind. I love everything and anything to do with women, I just dont want to have to beat on them or see them bloodied :(

He didn't quit and he didn't forfeit. He defaulted. It's different.
He chose not to wrestler her because of his religious beliefs.
And judging by the records, he would have killed her.

Nope. No rules changed. She was allowed the wear a shirt under her singlet (as can anyone else competing). Also she had a different kind of head gear on to keep her hair out of the way, but that's very common for female wrestlers.

Also- I'm a sports reporter, and have covered a lot of high school sports. I don't mind saying wrestling is by far my least favorite to cover (I just don't get it). But it's important for those who are reading this story to understand that girl wrestlers are not uncommon. In fact, there are a ton of them. In some of the smaller schools I've covered, coaches will recruit girls to fill the lower weight classes (103lbs and 112lbs), because it's hard to find high school boys who weigh that little. A lot of teams end of having to default those weight classes because they can't find anyone small enough to fill them (I wonder how many matches both of these girls won because the teams they wrestled during the regular season didn't have a wrestler in their weight class...not a gender thing, would be the same for any person at 103 or 112, but interesting nonetheless). Anyway I've watched and interviewed several high school girl wrestlers. However, I've never seen a boy default or forfeit a match to avoid wrestling one. I think this story is interesting because it was an individual tournament, where as, most regular season matches are team matches. I wonder if he would have opted out if the result would have hurt his team's chances of winning rather than just his own...
But like I said, I've interviewed a lot of girl wrestlers and they know what they are up against, and they know that it makes guys uncomfortable. But every single one just wanted to compete. They wanted the best match out of whoever they drew to wrestle. And most guys suck it up and give it their best.

I said this in earlier post that my freshmen year in high school we had a girl on our team. She was very well liked on the team and as I recall all the guys really respected her and what she was doing. She didn't get too much ice time but when she did it changed the dynamic of the game. I completely understand it from the girls' point of view. Yes, they want to compete at a high level, I completely respect that. But if it changes the game in a negative way it is not a good thing. We are talking about teenagers, not mature adults, and most of them, and a lot of adults for that matter, wouldn't know to handle the intense situations that arise in sports when you have different genders competing.

First thing- hockey is different, at least here in the States. The girls game has completely different rules at the high school level. It's no contact. No checking. Completely different. So yeah, I can see how that would be different for a girl playing in that game. I'm not sure if that's allowed here. I've never seen a girl skater playing high school hockey here. A few goalies, but no skaters.

But for wrestling, I don't think it's bad for the sport, and I don't think girls' competing changes the game in a negative way. I think this story (with the guy choosing not to participate) is an isolated thing. Like I said, I've talked to a lot of girls, and the guys too (the boys almost always win) and it's funny to hear the boys talk about it. Almost all of them tell me the same thing "You really have to try your hardest, because you don't want to lose to a girl."
I've never talked to one who was upset about having to wrestle a girl.

I'm from the states though I live in Ireland now. This was back in '88 before girls ice hockey was offered as a girls sport.

as a parent I don't care for it much, I don't have a daughter but if I did I don't think I could handle it.
I may have an old fashioned side to me but that's just the way it is but beauty of it is that as parents we still have that choice while our kids are at that age once they're 18 and in college we kinda loose that option.
if another parent feels differently about that their choice and there is no hard feelings here and there should be no hard feeling toward the young man that defaulted this match.
there was a class at my sons school that I found out about that was a definite no as far as I was concerned so I went to the school and talked with the principal (who agreed with me) and it was a done deal,my son did not have to take the class sense it was not a general education class (math English science etc.)
