Can anyone suggest a good album to start with Arcade Fire? I'm a total newbie but want to check out the music and see if it's worth the hype

  • Don't believe the hype
  • Arcade Fire is Awesome!! and has been around for a while now. There first album is called "Funeral" and is very good for a debut album. It's a great place to start if you are looking to get into them

  • Ignore the naysayer. Arcade Fire is definitely good music to listen to. I saw them live 2 times in 2005 and was amazed at their stage presence. If you are new to their music, the newest album, "The Suburbs" is most palitable. My 15 month old son dances to "Modern Man when it comes on. It is awesome. Their first officially released LP, "Funeral" is good as well. The 2nd album is good, but the 1st or 3rd would be my suggestion.

Also, if you like them, Wolf Parade "Apologies to the Queen Mary" is a great album.

I do love PJ best though. This music is not like PJ, which in my mind is good. (I hate wannabe bands like Creed)

Only 3 albums - Funeral, Neon Bible & Suburbs. I'd say Funeral is still the best, but they're all really good. I think there's an EP too, but I haven't heard it. Give the songs a few listens to grow on you. Enjoy! 8-)

I would start by going to one of their shows, because the CDs are great but they don't do justice to how good that band is on stage

I'd say Funeral > The Suburbs > Neon Bible - but there's not much between them. All utterly fantastic records. Some bands are 'hyped' for a very good reason - AF are one of them.

    Leeds 2006, London 2007, Hartford 2008, London Shepherds Bush 2009, London O2 2009, Dublin 2010, London Hyde Park 2010, Amsterdam 1 2012, Amsterdam 2 2012, Berlin 1 2012, EV solo London 30/7/2012, Berlin 2014, Stockholm 2014, Milton Keynes 2014, Amsterdam 1 2018, London 1 2018, London 2 2018, EV solo Dublin 2019, London 1 2022, London 2 2022, New York City 2022

  • I thought the suburbs was fantastic and the vinyl version is incredible. I would, however, simply star with their first album. There are only three of them so picking a starting point isn't that big of a deal

I didn't know they did a Public Enemy cover!

What hype? They have released 3 albums, and have toured extensively...they are a proven band.
  • Yeah, start with Funeral, their first album. Neon Bible, their second, was a much stronger album than the grammy winning album, imo.

Isnt the vinyl supposed to sound exactly like the cd version because of how it was mastered?

  • theres this little tiny unheard of album called Funeral. It changed alot of peoples lives way back in 2005.

Bowie and Byrne handed out copies personally to friends and family and the bands name spread like wildfire...
  • and i'll add believe the hype. listen to their albums and try and get a ticket to an upcoming gig. Bonnaroo or something else where they are playing.

The albums are fantastic, but its the live show where the band really shine. Ive been to hundreds of gigs, and am a regular concert-goer, And the the 2 AF shows I have seen have lived up to the hype. I saw them in 2007 and considered it the best show i'd ever seen period. So when 2010 came around and they toured again, i got a ticket immediately, but felt very nervous. Is it unfair of me to go to the show, as no band can possibly live up to that hype, right? How do you go into a show like that, after going to the best show i;ve ever seen? Any other show by that band even a good one would be a disappointment. The show in 2010 topped the 2007 show.

    They are that good....

There's only 3 albums so I suggest finding a friend who has them all and borrow them.

It actually still sounds a tiny bit different, but yeah, very similar. The vinyl also has a slightly adjusted track order (which I prefer) and a locked groove on one of the sides.

For the life of me, I will NEVER understand these threads, do it old school and go buy a cd of them, ask your friends if they have any cd's of them or mp3's you can borrow, go to the local music store and ask them. When I was younger I didn't have to ask anyone, "What's a good Led Zeppelin album?" or can you recommend a good Jimi Hendrix album or Frank Zappa album, I just went for it!

Just kind of went on the lame descriptions in the BMG catalog. Wow, that was a long time ago.

No I just didn't need to ask people for advise on what band or artist to like or listen to, I did the leg work myself on bands that I got into and BMG, come on, I'm WAY older than that, more like Columbia Record Club!

I have only really got into arcade fire since the suburbs came out, got their other two albums and realized I had actually heard and known a lot more of their music then I thought.

Neon bible is my least favorite, funerals is pure fucking gold. Love wake up. Best. Song. Ever.

Sprawl II is one of the ones I'm not a huge fan of, it kinda reminds me of abba.

Some say Heart of Glass by Blondie.
I am reading comments on Amazon, it is a mix of positive and negative.

Yeah it's not bad, I just think it's not the best. But you seriously gotta get funerals. It's epic. Then suburbs then neon bible.

But like me I think you might have heard a lot of their stuff and not realised. Especially if you listen to triple j a bit.
