Vienna 2014
The low end rumble of the soft rhythms that Jeff and Matt create are upfront on the elegant Long Road opener. Matt initiates the snare rolls right after and we go into Can’t Keep. The bootleg definitely has a warm, thick, and bassy tone. Jeff is well represented here, as are Mike's chuggy riffs on Can't Keep. The boot audio mix helps complement the instrumental arrangements of the Riot Act number. A trait of Euro 14, Black this early in the setlist is nothing less than epic. This makes the show feel like a new kind of journey, very fresh. Ed holds the long note in Black too. Ed's falsetto vocals are haunting on the outro too. The crowd sound quite spirited! Matt plays a quick build up before heading into the drum intro for Last Exit. The set flow on these opening tunes is perfection! Ed and Matt are on fire. Ed's vocals hold strong on the end of Last Exit. A heavy Why Go starts immediately after, and I tell you this show feels huge. Keeping it going is STBC. Jeff sounds so good. Matt's cymbals do not get too loud like they sometimes do, and everyone rocks. The interlude of Hail Hail is exceptional. Matt's drum fills and dynamics are spot on. This gives the song more kick. That's a quality play on one of my favorite PJ songs. The first seven songs to this point tonight are simply awesome. What a way to start a show. After a brief pause, a solid Got Some then keeps the fast pace going. The crowd clap along loudly.
Ed's greets the crowd, and we finally have a chance to breathe. Matt's kick drum rumbled, and extended deep in my in ear monitors for the intro to LB, so much depth! After MYM, Severed Hand makes an appearance. Mike and Jeff are exceptional, and it's a very tight version all around. The solo is amazing too; the guitars have great tones. I Got Shit looks odd on paper to follow, but after three upbeat rockers it works wonders. In its own right, it's an absolute powerhouse here and a damn good performance from the entire band. Ed's description of the meaning of Amongst the Waves is cute. It's good to see it getting a play, quite rare nowadays. Ed has some minuscule improv moments for the lyrics, but overall it's a good take. Mike and Stone sound very much in synch for their guitar harmonies. Ed points out those chanting for Stone, and the next is a request from Mike. It is also illustrative of the weather when they arrived. Rain is next. I haven't heard it in years, and I thought it was exceptional tonight. It's bouncy, fun, and Jeff's bass lines are too damn catchy; a wonderful cover! I found it to be a fitting choice to follow Amongst the Waves too.
Ed jokes that the next song is an Alice Cooper song, Even Flow is next. Ha! It's a little later in the main set for it, and that helps. Matt's mini drum solo is ear candy. His toms and snare are mixed richly. Mike and Ed's joking and interaction on stage is priceless. Sirens-Wishlist are a beautiful combo stylistically. Both are solid plays, even if Ed mismatches lyrics in Wishlist. Rats sounds incredibly groovy coming after Wishlist, and has a lot of sway. Here's an example of how set flow has an impact on songs. The whole band stand out in one way or another; top notch rendition of the rarity and great spot in the setlist. Personally, I think Public Image benefits following Rats and I enjoy the cover here. Musically it sounds really cool, and is accented tremendously by the audio mix. DTE keeps the momentum up. Mike's got a different guitar effect going for much of the song (probably the same one from PI). Stone's solo finds everyone sounding incredibly tight and in the pocket. Ending the main set is RVM. It feels kind of darker tonight, as it should. The end of the jam is electrifying. Talk about one hell of a main set. Goddamn, that was an incredible one; very much a ride. The boys were ON and played well too.
Ed states how the band were discussing backstage how great of a time they were having tonight, and thanks the crowd for it. A rare little cover, The Needle and The Damage Done starts the encore 1. Ed's vocals sound good, and then we head into another rarity. Speed of Sound is a solid take here. It's not quite the quality of Pitts and San Diego 2013 because Ed meshes a few lyrics together. However, it's hardly distracting and still enjoyable. Another top shelf song, Footsteps is a gorgeous play. Ed's vocals hit slightly higher notes, reminiscent of 2005 to my ears. Mike's solo must also be praised for its beauty here. Ed says something quick like, Small Town is "for beer drinking." This encore feels like a campfire, and Daughter helps keep this ebb and flow stay alive. Jeff's bass lines are warm and comforting on the Vs number. The tempo is just right too, and not too fast. Also, I love the way Ed's been singing the chorus since 2013 with certain accents on different syllables. SOLAT-Brain of J follow, the first is great, and the latter is decent, even of Ed's vocals get a touch worn on the Yield rocker. Lukin is also raw with lyrics all messed up. Porch then concludes the first encore. Stone plays a little bit of that riff he started in Baltimore '13. Smile-Fuckin Up have a nice feel to start the final part of the gig. Alive-Baba follow. It's a warm sounding, somber Indifference that concludes the proceedings.
Having not listened to a Lightning Bolt era bootleg for weeks at this point, Vienna 2014 did not let me down. The first seven songs are especially noteworthy; plus, the bootleg sounds absolutely phenomenal to me with its rich, bass heavy sound. My only minor nitpick is the last encore doesn't quite live up to the main set or encore one's energy and potential, but it's still certainly no slouch either. Plus, it's tight performances all around. Simply put, Vienna 2014 is a top quality bootleg.

The Gorge set is phenomenal and deserves to be every bootleg collection.
I can't tell you how many times I've listened to Gorge 2005, which is one of my top 3 boots of all time. The acoustic set is just fantastic, and complimented so well by the main electric set. Also might have the best version of Hard To Imagine that I have heard.Bristow, VA - 5.13.10
