We're not a competitive band... Especially like with other bands... It's music... It's art... You can't win... We're grateful for other bands... We're certainly grateful for the bands that brought us here the first time back in 1991... We played with Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers... We're still so grateful to Flea and Anthony and Chad and now Josh... And, of course, my great great friend Jack Irons... That's how I met Stone and Jeff... Our band owes so much to that band... Literally, I owe so much to Jeff and Stone and Mike for having faith in me in the early days... And Matt for agreeing to be in our band even though I was in it... This one goes back so far I was before even met these guys or even really knew who they were... Before we came out tonight, we're talking about a guy... Maybe two months ago, there was a guy who's climbing a mountain... I think we all do that in different ways... He fell off this mountain, which we all do in different ways... But he got trapped under a rock... Under a big boulder... He was by himself... He was there for two days without any water, food... He knew there was no way to get out... So he ended up cutting his own arm off with a jackknife... It was actually a Leatherman tool... Actually, we should really write a song about this guy... So he cuts his arm off in order to survive, leaves it there under the rock... Has to break it first... Before he cuts, he has to break it... Then he cuts it... Takes maybe a couple hours... Then he climbs down the mountain... Takes another hour to do that... And then he walks four hours to safety with his truncated arm... I don't know about you, but that guy gets Man of the Year to me... Although, still early in the year, if our president was to unselfishly cut his own head off to save the rest of the world from his wrap... With a Leatherman... About eleven years ago... I'll tell you a story about a little girl and her dad... She's about seven years old... It was in the Hawaiian islands... The dad just came in from a boat ride in early morning... His daughter was there on the dock... He was about to tell the daughter we're not going out again... He told her that they're not going out... He said we're not going out again... It's too rough... It's too rough... He was on his own... His name is Keith Baxter... He pulled in a port in Maui... His daughter was there, seven years old, little blonde girl... And she said: "Dad, you promised, you promised"... And he said: "It's too rough out there, it's too rough"... She said: "You promised you're going to take me across to the other island"... It's too rough baby... And she insisted, she insisted... He took her round the boat ride... They got about halfway to the other island, maybe little farther... Big waves in the middle of the channel... Fifteen-foot waves... In the middle of the channel... And this little girl she was out there and she somehow heard voices... She heard voices amongst all the wind and these big rolling waves in the middle of this channel... Then they stopped, turn the engines off to listen... And then they listen... They listen... And then they heard voices out there... And then they looked up and they saw a couple paddles... A couple canoe paddles... In the middle of this channel... There were three people in the middle of the channel... Drifting... They would have drowned if they wouldn't have found these people... There was 70% chance they would have drowned... These people probably wouldn't have lived if it weren't for this little girl that heard this voice and made the dad stop and encouraged the dad... She saved these three people's lives... The reason I know the story and I know it well... I was one of those three people... And that little girl who's seven years old... I haven't met her since then... I haven't seen her since then... Her name is Ashley Baxter and she made it to Seattle for the show... I just want to introduce you to Ashley real quick... And thank her... So, I just want to thank Ashley Baxter and her dad, Keith Baxter... I'm dedicating this song, Future Days, to her cause without her I'm not sure if we'd have them... Mr. Matt Cameron on the drum kit... And I believe Soundgarden, they probably played the Town Pump... I know Mudhoney played the Commodore Ballroom... I was there for one of those... They played with a band called Captain America... They were British... I don't know why I was just thinking this: I wonder if the US border... The US Customs agents... I wonder if they would have a problem with, let's say, Toronto's mayor coming to the United States... I suppose if his destination was like New Mexico or something... They'll be: "Oh fine, yeah whatever"... This song's about somebody whose final destination was Alaska, via Seattle, via Vancouver... His name is Chris McCandless...
