I tell you, this place has a very strong, deep memory for all of us... The tragedy that happened at the festival in Denmark... This was the first show we played after that... About a month after that happened... It was terrifying, it was difficult and it was also raining, and lightning... You guys, whoever were there, you really helped us through it... So we still owe you for that one... And now we're back, we got perfect air-conditioning... We got a full moon... It's a bit smoky... But, I don't think we've ever played this one here, because it was written before that show in a hotel room right down the street... This one,we'll play it for you, it's called "I-Am-Mine"... ~ Eddie Vedder

An excellent “Long Road” starts off a very strong main set of the first show of the 2010 European tour. I wouldn’t say that anything here is totally off-the-charts great but the band is certainly “on”, Eddie’s in a good mood and almost every song is well played and with a lot of passion. I particularly enjoy the 5 song sequence of “Unthought Known” through “Down” towards the end of the set. Set list junkies will note that this concert also contains the first ever performance of Joe Strummer’s “Arms Aloft”.
The first encore is highlighted by the live debut of the still-unreleased PJ original “Of The Earth”. The band really lets its Who flag fly on this one, as the first two minutes of the song could have come straight off of Tommy or Quadrophenia. It then transitions to a 3 or 4 minute “Porch”-style jam, after which they return to the Who motif for a minute or two and then end the song with a gentle “Black”-esque coda. I don’t have the slightest clue what the song’s about but I kinda like it! Unfortunately they choose to end the encore right after this by playing “Porch” itself, which feels very redundant in this spot. For that reason I think it would have been better to either slot “Of The Earth” somewhere in the main set or finish this encore with something shorter and less jammy, like “Spin The Black Circle” or “Go”.
The second encore is most noteworthy for Mike having the impeccably good taste to throw a few bars of Thin Lizzy’s “Cowboy Song” into the coda of “YL”, a nice touch that brought a smile to my face. It makes me wish they would have played the whole song. I’ll bet it would have gone over like gangbusters - both for the concertgoers and us boot listeners! (Mike also mixes in a little bit of what I think is an early U2 song very soon after that, but I can’t for the life of me come up with the title. Sorry).
A couple of sound notes. For most of the show, the mix on this one is very much dominated by Mike’s guitar, Ed’s vocals and Matt’s drums. Jeff and Stone are usually way in the background. It doesn’t ruin the listening experience by any means, but a better balance among the instruments would have been nice. Secondly - and I apologize if this is way more common than I realize, it’s possible that I’m just noticing it for the first time here - but on this one you can hear the drums move back and forth between the left and right channels as Matt careens around his drum kit. Is that what they mean by “panning” the drums? Did they have a mic positioned right over his drum kit when they made this boot? I dunno. But by any name and whatever recording method it sounds pretty cool on headphones.
For me this show doesn’t quite achieve the Desert Island status of the 5 (count ‘em!) concerts that ended the US tour the previous month. However, it’s a very strong, energetic outing with quite a few fine performances. Definitely worth a listen.

That it would! How's the Quebec city boot? Never gave it a listen. On 11/6. What a great bunch of shows!
It was ok.. Not the best of the '05 Canadian shows. Has a pretty great version of Black, and the first encore MOTH -> I Am Mine -> Footsteps -> Crazy Mary -> Alive was excellent.
